Right then here we go....
April   6th- 9th
New bigger, flatter, even closer, campsite and a promise for the future.

Guests so far: most of the usual PLUS George Papavgeris, Sally and the Shot Dogs, Crispen Bartlett, Dave and Brenda, Rock Berntsen, Lucy Burrows.
This is just to wet your whistle and because the website is still at the fine tweakers (Toby = Web guru extraordinaire)

I dont see any problems with access, large lorries and horseboxs often drive up to the field. There is a short steepish slope just off the road but it is a hard surface. See you there.

Hi Lynne! Wimps????? You haven't met my youngest daughter have you? Besides, I've done my share of winter camping; try a snow hole on Ben Nevis for a couple of days in February, waiting for the storm to blow out! No, these days it's sybaritic luxury all the way for me; hot showers, central heating and a well stocked built-in bar. Lovely!

Before we all get squashed in the rush let me clarify Bunkhouse arrangements.
Basically if you had a booked bunk last year you will be given first refusal. At the moment all bunks are allocated. There is a short list of hopefuls, some more needy than others, but it relies on cancellations. Please let me know if you had a bunk last year and don't need it this year (or perhaps are happy to share with your partner - no giggling).
The new caravan site is nearer, larger and with easier access so I hope this will encourage more "Tin Tents".

Talking of near.... the new caravan and carpark is actually the field right next to the main Miskin Mill field in the direction of the old camp site. I haven't measured it yet but the old field was 400 yards so this can't be more than a hundred. I am hoping there might even be a way through the woods and across the little foot bridge. Have a look on Google maps. When the website is up and running next week I will put a map there.

Ah, Vanwatch!

So far all I need to plan is ripping out the fridge and taking it over to the Dometic agent in Southend to find out why it doesn't go cold in hot weather (I expect the answer is expensive) and get the remarkable Mr Shea to investigate the grabbing brakes. Still the Volvo that replaced the Skoda is heavy enough that a wagging van usually doesn't bother it. Oh yes, and the fans on the fridge air vents to aid hot air extraction....

I've already done the new high-power water pump.

It'd be nice to get the radio-cassette that I took out of the Volvo in, too, and that will mean properly fitting four speakers in place of the currently rather un-located two speakers. Indeed I have half a plan to fit a big sub to go thud, and to re-fit the little telly to the front of the sub so it doesn't bang people on the head

I also want to re-fit the front interior light, and to re-tension the roller blind on the top window so it works, and that will mean taking out and replacing the guitar shelves, but they want re-fitting more securely anyway.

I'm hoping the gas fire will behave itself after all the grief last year, but maybe some larger gas-bottles (which means new gas-bottle fittings) would help it.

Oh, and rigging up a spare-wheel rack so that I can take a spare wheel just in case

And re-stapling the bit of undertrim that gets the wind inside it and pulls down if I drive too fast.

And blanking off the draught-space under the fridge to keep the wind out...

Nothing as potentially disastrous as last year, though.

I don't know if Jeff will come this year. Miskin and the Pigs' Ear Folk Ale were the only fests last year he could psych himself up enough to come to, and as some of you may remember he was a bit odd at both. However his court case turned out better than expected so maybe he will be feeling more at ease with himself. We wait to see.

So that makes it part vanwatch and part nutwatch.......

And if Jeff does not come then I get to try out the new field, and bring thigh waders to get across the stream...

Rightyho Richard. First things first, take out the fridge and stand it upside down for at least an overnight, longer if you have the patience. Honest.... this lets the coolant stuff sort itself out and get back in the right place. This may be all it needs, especially if it sort of works now. If it still doesn't want to play, check it on lectricity, mains or 12volt (remember it takes loads of current on 12volt and is not very efficient so you can only realistically do this on a long run) Hopefully it also runs on mains, and if it now works you need to either carefully clean or replace the gas jet. Always worth a try at cleaning but new jets are better.
The heat enxchanging thingy which is the heart of the system is seperate on mains and gas, hence the check.

By the way, I hope everyone's started to collect the odd '£ coins' so you've got plenty in your pockets for the raffle tickets as well as the liquid libations...... Oh & don't forget to keep your 'unwanted' Christmas presents in a safe place as prizes!

Thanks Andy - but I have already tried turning teh fridge over daily for a week. The heating element is different for mains (works best) gas (works next best) and 12v (hardly at all - and at about 8 amps very bad for batteries). The pipework and heat exchanger is common.

The fault is usually caused by running out of vertical, and that makes stuff in the refrigerant fluid crystallise - and according to the chemists that is irreversible!

The remedy is a heart-lung transplant for the fridge at a cost of about 200squid.

But I might try it one more time, although of course since in the cold weather it does refrigerate I will have no way to test until too late....

Have you checked that the insulation around the pipe above the gas jet hasn't slipped down a bit? They often do and then the gas won't light. You just need to shove it up a bit and all will be fine and dandy once more.

The gas lights. I generate lots of heat out the flue (except on 12V). I generate enough cold in cold weather. I don't generate enough cold in hot weather. I gain about 15 degrees from outside temperature. So long as the outside temperature doesn't go over 22 degrees, teh fridge stays fridge temperature.

Strangely, the icebox makes ice no matter how hot the outside world gets.

We dont need a workshop on port we always have bottles of the stuff at the festival as 3 years ago i found a 5p in the mill and dropped it in a port bottle,from that day a few of us saived our 5p and became the port club, each year since we have had a meal at Christmas out of the money, this year its dec16th great. Well the port 'n cheese idea seems to be off the ground.

May need the use of a fridge to stop all the cheese escaping:-)(port and wine can stay at room or terrace temperature unless you are going to bring something that needs chilling).

Anybody heard from Cllr recently - he was one of the people who mooted the idea last Easter.

Good job we have the Middle Bar reunion (and a couple of sings local to me) between now and Easter the anticipation would be almost unbearable!!

But somehow last year we fitted in the Chav's Morris and a rather excellent Mummers Play, so I'm sure a slot will arrive in the ever continuing time warp that is Miskin.

Though in fact, last Miskin I didn't decide anything, I kind of got caught up and whisked along to various things, all of which I enjoyed incredible. I think I'll just drift where it takes me again...I just hope I get to drift to the wine and cheese session!

Don't really like all these cheeses with fruit and things in. What we have around here now, and which I will try to remember to bring some of to Miskin, is red Leicester cheese. Now you may think that that sounds fairly boring, but over the last couple of years, a farm near Market Bosworth in Leicestershire has started making Red Leicester cheese and it is the first time it's actually been made IN the county for over 50 years. The cheese is lovely...nicer than all the every-day red Leicesters.

What goes really well with nice cheese, apart from port, is a good drop of elderberry though........

re: Fridge - the 12v is only supposed to keep the frodge cool, during towing between home and site, once you have brought the temperature down using Mains or Gas. one on site you should revert to Mains or Gas.

General question, is this 'little' gathering open to all comers or does one have to be able to perform? honestly I cannot carry a tune in a bucket and only sing when someone wants the room cleared. I am sure I could manage the Cheese and Port session without too much trouble though. >:o)

Phew, that's a relief, I was running out of buckets.
Be assured of a warm welcome Malc. The ancient art of audienting is in danger of dying out and it really is about due for a revival of its own. Feel free to come along to Miskin and practice to your hearts content. You will be able to audient at song and music of course but you might try a burst of Storytelling but beware of the urge to participate , this would go against the ethic of a true audient.
I cannot guarantee complete immunity to the joining in disease as the night gets older though. Voices improve as the ears get tired I believe. Or it might be the result of too many visits to the room on the end where we dispense the throat ointment.
You just come along here, 'twill be right good fun.

If it is a beer bucket, empty it first (into the carrier) and the sound will appear to improve.

Brian Rodgers (of No Worries" alleges that his 12V will freeze a mushroom in the body of the fridge in an hour.

My mains and gas will only gain about 15 degrees over the outside air even if flat out, so no use once the outside air goes over 22 degrees. OK in winter, but I don't caravan much then....

That damned fridge has got to be sorted!

A very valid point Anne - sometimes people on the Mudcat forget that there are a lot of folkied who do not compute, and if they do are not necessarily interested in Mudcat. There are also the ones who have come here and gone away, either because it didn't suit their style of play or due to incidents such as run ins with trolls or arguments with some of the more abrasive members.
Anyway - with the sort of performance we had last Easter it works much better if you use local materials on the spot.

I'm aware of 2 other Splott's near Cowbridge, and 2 others in Somerset, so I think it's an old name. The common link seems to be a farm, and also low lying land.

Today KB and I purchased some Stilton with mint & CHOCOLATE, I kid you not! It is Gorgeous, it was for our Christmas Day Cheese board but I dont thinkl it will last to Christmas eve. It is Yummy!!!!!!! I may try to freeze a bit, as it is a Christmas special!

Sorry...stilton itself is bad enough. The idea of mint and chocolate stilton makes me want to throw up.

BTW, did you know that stilton is now being produced at Quenby Hall in Leicestershire, which is reputed to be where the original stilton was made? It's not cheap, but I'm glad it's being produced there again. We also have a farm producing red Leicester cheese in teh county for the first time in 50 years. It's beautiful and I may bring some of it to Miskin

Just to prevent any confusiuon, this is white stilton with mint and chocolate not blue (it is infact pale green stilton with dark brown chocolate chips I agree it sounds horrible in the extreme, but it tastes like heaven on earth, honest!

Oh well, it's a different matter if it's not blue. The idea of blue cheese, which to my mind tastes the way old, sweaty socks smell, with mint and chocolate is nauseating. White stilton I LOVE. Can't say I've been over struck on all these stiltons with various fruit, Christmas pudding stilton etc, but I'll keep an open mind on the chcolate and mint then!

If you all like Stilton then you'll surely like, Cabrales from, Asturias/Cantabres in Northern Spain. Was a real blue before Roquefort was even Cambridge colour.

It took Mrs P nigh on 15 years te gerruz te eat 'MATURE' farmhoose cheddar - but she persevered and aah can eat it noo.

Sounds as though you and I have similar cheese tastes Geordie Peorgie. I can't stand ANY blue cheese either, and I don't eat cheddar generally because if it's mature it's too strong and if it isn't it's boring. I do like a lot of the British regional cheeses, which, thank goodness, are making a comeback.
Did you Know that there are something like 70 different regional cheeses in England and Wales? (Not sure if Scotland was conted in that)

I like the crumbly and creamy cheeses. I love Caerphilly (Gods, how on earth do you spell that??), Wensleydale, Cheshire, Lancashire, Yarg. Red Leicester is the cheese I always have in the fridge for day to day use.

The nice thing about them is that they go particularly well with wine, and with a good cider. I'm really looking forward to the stilton and port party (Or cheese and wine...) Yet another aspect of Miskin to enjoy!!

I'm the same Lynne, no Blue for me, but I do LOVE mature Cheddar & local cheeses. But.....

I have just found a delicatessen which sells 'Norbury Blue' which is made just down the road but doesn't have a farm shop. It's now included in the cheeseboard for Christmas and I'll report back when it's been thoroughly checked out. It may be worth investing in for Miskin.

The very nice man behind the counter agreed to speak to his customers in French for the rest of the day and advised me to leave the cheese at room temperature for at least 2 hours prior to eating so that the Blue (which you can't really see at the moment) develops. We will be watching it....

I'm not a curry person at all.

I had a friend who loved cheese and golden syrup sandwiches and used to have vegenmite on her cinnamon buns.

When Richard was small he insisted, from time to time, on having a cheese, peanut butter and vegemite sandwich. He was quite definite about it and it was his own invention. I figured it was a very nutritious combination and probably his body telling him what he needed.

According to some wine experts (But what do they know) on the TV program "Ready Steay Cook" yesterday.

- Port and wine is a No, No! even for the heavy blues. Even Red wines are a No, No.

Good to see so many fine voices to be heard ringing in the cottage - but where oh where is Tori? She made my cry 4 times in 3 songs last year - too, too wonderful. I should not denigrate any of the other fine performers from last year (well, except perhaps for someone with a "musical" saw, who despite all was perfectly amiable and friendly when sober) but she was wholly the pinnacle of the festival for me. Perhaps since she is young other delights have tempted her away but I DO hope she will be back.

Oh, and John the Barden if passing and Capella, and any others who know, lend an ear and voices to my plea that Marion Button's voice in that setting would just be to die for....

I have just discovered an old friend from many years ago,who helped some friends & me to run a folk-club in Gosport,in a pub called the Queens Hotel. I was in a group called "The Mariners " ,she was a schoolgirl who came along,with two friends,to help set up,put the chairs out ,etc. Well, it turns out that she has been going to Miskin since it first started, and that she & I have spoken to each other at Miskin, without realising who we were !!! Her name is Anne,& her daughter is a good fiddle-player,apparently !! Anyway,Miskin this year will now be very special for me !! Thanks for the enthusiasm, but unfortunately life isn't that simple. I don't actually own the Mill site, I just pay lots of money to use it from FRIDAY MIDDAY till Monday. They allow us onto the site Thursday afternoon to set up, so please don't arrive there before that!! We have a new field for camping, and I am still getting to know the farmer. It will be available from Thursday but only if you are coming to help.
Last years early start was a one off because it was Toby's 21st. The extra work involved in starting so early was too much and made it a very long weekend for all those involved in stewarding and security etc.

A quick progress report.
There has been some!

I'm only about as behind as I usually am this time of year, trouble is Easter is a bit near!!!

Still thinking about a suitable benificiary for the Mudraffle this year. A proportion will be going to Mudcat though.

If you are hoping for a space on the increasingly crowded Mill car park, please remember it is only for those unable to get about easily or with special requirements. The new field really is nearer and I hope this will ease the pressure a bit.

Vanwatch starts here! Last year I was towing with a Skoda Felicia 1600 (with an iffy clutch) this year a Volvo 745 GLT, so expect better transit time! Also, the shower pump has been replaced and uprated. However...

I have bought a new (ish) fridge on ebay, and am now sorting out the paying and delivery so maybe my salad will not go off this year - but I have to install it (the fridge, not the salad) when it gets here and stop the draught round it, and maybe put the extra fans on the vent slots. Oh, and make sure the gas union is safe. Watch this space.

I need to get the local "Mr Caravan" to check the van brakes and see if he can stop them coming on with a bit of a bang - but I fear that will be a new shock absorber in the Al-ko coupling and that may be out of my price bracket.

Generator needs checking.

New leisure battery may be needed - although last one is only 18 months old. I thought they lasted longer than that but pretty well as soon as I unplug the mains cable, on comes the red battery light...

Last weekend I removed all the special guitar shelving to get at the overhead flourescent that the shelf obsucred - and to fix the top window flyscreen and blind. What did I find? Some (not a lot, but some) damp wood. Now, although the blinds are working, and the flourescent relocated, I need to find time to remove and re-seal the window. Not rocket science, so long as the rusty screws come out, but all time. Did you know mastic is allegedly better than plumber's silicon because it re-seats if disturbed? Once done, a bag or two of dessicant will be useful.

Now the Volvo came with a radio cassette, which has been replaced by a radio cassette with CD stacker under the boot floor plus an amp and subs - so the Volvo radio and graphic and power amp need to go in the van, maybe with subs (I think I can see a place for a small sub) and that will mean some battens on the guitar shelves to screw the speaker housings etc to.

And the table-top clips in the shower-room need relocating as the mounting points for the previous location seem to have gone soft (but on a van that age I don't think it's worth trying to re-wood and re-finish)

There's a small problem with the attachment of the fibreglass skin under the kitchen cupboard, but I think a batten and some screws will fix that.

What I'd really like to do is re-inject the floor, as it is getting a bit spongy. Has anyone done that? I'm told it is easy, you drill holes and inject a two-pack adhesive, and then somehow clamp.

Oh, and now I have the Volvo which will stand the noseweight, bigger gas bottles, enabling me to leave a healthy stew in the oven when I go out in the morning and to come back for it later. Better for me than the guilty pleasure of fryups...

And I'd better check that the repair I did to the gas fire is still gas-tight, too, or park well clear of other vehicles........

Oh, yes, and send the booking form, too.

Aah wad like te let yez aall knaah that on Good Friday, 6th April aah will hev been married te Mrs P for 25 years.

MGAS has been assisting me in a surprise for the present Mrs P and at aboot 5pm on that date aah wad like as many as is interested te join us at the bridge (I think!) when I re-affirm my love for a canny lass who has put up with a lot ower the years.

MiskinMan hez given us the gan-on and, hopefully, Fern will do us a handfasting and aah think wor eldest and her partner will also mek a commitment at the same time.

This is summat completely new and exciting for me (and still a big secret from 'The Lovely Shirl' - and aah want te keep it that way) so although aah've only met a few 'catters, aah'm proud te be one and would love to hev you's with us on the day!

I've already counted myself and the management in. Love the idea of a hand fasting - well done Geordie-Peorgie, and Jock O'Dreams idea of a wee nippy sweetie. Our 25th. Wedding anniversary was spent in a restaurant overlooking the harbour in Portree.It was a lovely and very romantic place to be, and I think the bridge at Miskin will be the same. See you there (it's not long now).

Richard - you're a glutton for punishment, but then again I might well bring my 12 string too. Hope the caravan upgrades are coming along well

Essex Girl ,should I bring a fully charged Battery to Miskin. Car charging towing is not enough. Leasure batteries need a slow charge for hours. Put our van bat on low charge for 24 hours still not fully charged

Can't you plug the van in at home Linda? Seeing as our van is parked elsewhere we can't keep her charged at home so we're off to Deal next weekend, firstly to see Jez Lowe but secondly to ensure the liesure battery gets charged up. 2 days plugged in really helps, plus we're stopping on the way down to Miskin to ensure another boost to the battery. If all else fails then we've always got the generator.

My urf lead goes to the 12n/12s plug, one in each and there is no chassis connection at all --- sudden bright idea - unless there is one from the Zig unit! There certainly isn't one from the battery or from the connection block near the battery.

Ok, have just checked Zig fitting insructions booklet and my assumption that the urf wire from the aux battery would go to the chassis was wrong (our urf problem was at the battery end) seems that it actually goes to terminal block 3 on the back of the Zig and then as you quite rightly say to an earth point on the tow car via the 12s plug & socket. So if the connections at the aux battery terminal and at the back of the Zig are ok then it does start to sound like the battery.

Polly jumping the broomstick wasn't confined just to gypsies, and even if it may not have been pagan tradition it is used fairly generally in pagan handfastings these days. Mine is, in fact a birch besom and nothing to do with broom.

Re leisure batteries; Maplins are doing a small solar panel trickle charger on special offer at the moment; about £10, and it does the job if your caravan is stored away from home with an alarm set. I've got one, and it works fine. Nowhere near big enough to replenish a battery over a weekend, but plenty for keeping the battery topped up in storage.

They can't be "Sussed" - the latter are also from Kent but play very very contemporary stuff (although my favourite of theirs, Foo Foo Powder (yes, it is about that) has a very 20s feel).

And on to batteries. 3 days with no charging but no load other than the lights in the Zig unit - warning light on again. Time to find that receipt and guarantee.

Chickwatch was pioneered by Cap'n'Ella at the Pigs Ear Folk Ale a couple of years ago. It involved having two tiny newly hatched chicks (baby hens, right?) in an incubator in the Cap'n'Ella caravan because they (the chicks, not Cap'n'Ella) were too small to be left at home and at least the first third of every performance of theirs (Cap'n'Ella, not the chicks) being taken up with a running bulletin on the state of these fragile mites who, as they grew, would, by daily egg production, add so much to the quality of life in Iwade.

And it's called "Iwade" because at high tide, everyone does.

And now back to Vanwatch. A manufacturer of batteries tells me that the basic chargers in vans don't cycle the charging rates well enough nor, basically, stuff enough spare electrons in, to get a leisure battery fully up to charge. They also told me that the battery pack and charger in my van (the electrics are a "Topsy") belongs on the antiques road show. So I've run the battery down a bit, topped it up a bit with distilled water, and put it abck on for a good wellying. We shall see.

Do not, repeat do not, buy leisure batteries from Camping International. I have the credit card statement showing the battery purchase and can get a duplicate credit card voucher ditto. The purchase was under 2 years ago and the battery has a 2 years guarantee. They refuse to replace because I haven't got the actual shop receipt. I am considering the small claims court....

Battery saga

Ok Richard. Electrician here, speaking off the top of and slightly out the back of said head.

Logically, what does your battery do? = gives you energy to run things.
Think of your pocket torch. Switch it on. Light appears Ok. For how long? Until battery expires.

Bigger battery lot more capacity lasts longer. Battery dies.

Rechargable battery ! Ah Good idea. Should last forever. Forget it.
No money in the production of something that's not got to be replaced.
A battery is doomed from birth. Bit like us humans. We just have no idea of how long.
When new and given it's first charge to bring it up to effect a battery will falsly tell you that it is producing "X"
A volt meter reading will also give you a number of volts. Usually over what the battery says it has. i.e. 12v = 13.5v etc.
An ampmeter will give a simullar falsification. This is just to get your hopes up that you are on to a winner.

The internal ressitace (and there is one) in the battery is downloading (Now you IT guys know what that is) "X" amps whilst it's standing there doing nothing (Or so you think)

Being constantly charged and re-charged enduces more sediment internal, increasing the internal ressitance even more so there is more, "leakage" as it's known. Your battery is slowly loosing it's effect the more you use it and even whist you don't use it.

Specific gravity. i.e. the electrolite in the battery cells can be measured to see if the battery is charged or flat or somewhere in between. Should be about 1240 if my memory serves me right. Somewhere on the green area of the hydrometer syringe that you stick in the cell to see if you have any life in the thing.

Fill with distilled water only when required and only to just above the level of the plates in the cell (about 1/8th. inch above) More will weaken the electrolite Recharging will be less effective and you're going downhill. Recharge the battery imediatly when adding any distilled water. Very important that.

Set your charger to as low as possible. A long low charge has more staying power.

Normal running of a car during the winter period will have minimal charging effect on the cars battery. Think it out. You have the lights, the heater, the radio, Car seats, electric windows, Windscreen wipers and spray. Cigarette lighter socket. (What have you got plugged into that? The mobile phone? The cooler box? In your case the Fridge!) Short journey's don't give the internal system a chance to reccuperate the losses. The cars internal system only gives a topping up effect. It won't rectify any serious loss.

The battery should be removed and placed on charge in the garage/kitchen table at least over night even all day if possible. Twice during the winter time.

It will also help the battery if it is purposly drained electrically completely and set on charged again SLOWLY. Gives it a "Kiss of life" so to speak.

You did remember to remove the caps to the cells when charging the battery? This lets the gasses escape.

Oh yes and when re-charged. The battery should stand unconnected for a period of time. At least until the bubbling of the electrolite has subsided. to allow it to recover from the exhaustive activity you have just put it through. A good 12 - 24hrs is worth while.

Experience with cars has taught me that an eighth of an inch over the cels may be theoretically perfect it doesn't work in practice and the best way to charge is fill to about a quarter of an inch below the inside of the cap-thread-neck and charge immediately.

I've got an electrolyte tester somewhere but find them very ineffective. Best plan to hook up several old headlights, and put digital voltmeter on terminals and watch the fade. 4 big headlights nearly 20 amps should show what's what. Battery people use a thing like an electric fire with a voltmeter in.

Yes - it's on a modern charger so should get properly tapered up. I have got a 1920s trickle charger in the garage, but it needs me to take it to bits again and get at the switch in the overload cutout (based on a hot-wire galvanometer, a thing of beauty to some) to make it work, so the modern one will have to do. Interestingly, caravan and battery shops tell me my TP2 pack simply will not charge the battery fully because of insufficient voltage, so they must be lying.

Standard car alternator voltage = 13.8V - but to many connections between alternator and van battery so charging while towing ineffective in general...

Yes, that's why I discharged it and charged it again. The charger is saying "Ready Now" (that was Franki Valli wasn't it?) so I'll leave it overnight and then put in van to settle. I won't be ready with the amp and graphic for a day or so, although the basic speakers are in now. I think the easiest way to mount the radiocassette, graphic and amp will be to build them all onto a board in the garage and then bolt the board up to the underneath of the shelf, leaving a space next to it for the little LCDTV, and behind it for a sub in due course.

Fridge will be on its way to me tomorrow.

Snag - it appears the front window has not been secure (someone snapped the fire exit fastenings, before my ownership) and there has been some water ingress left hand front, and I am going to have to re-make the window catches, so this is also the time to go to an opening front window in case of heatwaves... It seems dry now but I will need to re-check, and if so the visible area of loosened trim will hardly show because of soft furnishings so I don't need to bother about trying to re-laminate the insulation board...

Hmm, now what else was on my list? Gas fire and brakes, I think....

I think what you saw was described as a rough guide, and that is how it usually stays until I panic at the last minute and work out a proper one. A certain ceremony Friday evening and another Sunday lunchtime are the only excursions into pastures new. Impromptu events wouldn't be impromptu if I programmed them in, but Miskin wouldn't be the same without them.

We currently have about 20 Rhode Island red eggs in the incubator which will be hatching in 22 days, so Chickwatch is a definite possibility although if we're going to do live updates it'll be via the phone to Lesley's Mum who will be chicksitting back in Bobbing (not Iwade) Yes they do wade when the tide's in however we just bob.

Richard I'm enjoying this years vanwatch although if you could just manage to get it stuck in some mud when we arrive that would be fantastic as I'll then be able to play with my new Range Rover/tonka toy (not New new of course ~ just new to me) And in my defence (anticipating possible disapproval) we actually do need a 4x4 down on the farm and my first job was to have it converted to run on LPG, so its really quite environmentally friendly ~ honest!

General info on battery chargers:

Once upon a time they were unregulated, and could produce up to 20v - resulting in very hot batteries, and a lot of electrolyte in essence boiled off! Bad.

The TP2 and most integrated caravan chargers produce up to 13.8 volts and the current is regulated - sometimes to about 5 Amps but some less. However this does not I gather produce enough chemical action to de-phosphate the battery plates and does little if a battery ahs been neglected.

Modern car battery chargers produce up to 14.4 volts and are regulated according to their capacity, some 7A, some 10, some up to 20. This will often in effect "clean" the plates. By means of cunning electrickery, as the back emf rises (ie as the battery charges a bit) as the battery gets above about 11V, the charger voltage comes down to 13.8v and when the battery is fullycharged the charger goes down to "trickle" at about 13.5V and virtually no amps.

Essex Girl you may want to inform your electrician in case he is mostly mains oriented. I suspect you want to give your battery a good charge on a modern charger (check the electrolyte level), not in the van, then leave some lights on to drain it to a ways below the red warning light in the van, hoick it out again and re-charge on the modern charger. A modern woman can do that, no?

This is not strictly true. Several people I have booked have been on first meeting, I go purely by Miskin Tingle factor. Having said that almost everyone I have booked over the years is now a friend! As many of my friends know, being my friend does not get you a booking that would be a bit sickly wouldn't it. Only I know what makes me ask someone along to Miskin and sometimes I am not too sure myself, but so far the instinct works and so I'm sticking to it for a while.
If Seth happens to be in the area I would make sure he gets a hearing, and I shall be in the front row. Or is that row?

Oh by the way my van domestic hot water pump and the central heating have both packed up at the moment so can I join Van watch ?

To contribute to vanwatch, I have spring cleaned ours, the dehumidifier has removed most traces of winter damp, the batteries are charged and we are ready to roll!
Yes, Andy and Jillie, this does mean I am definately coming! Leg is part-time out of plaster, I have a removable one as a temporary measure, I hope to have my moon boot by then, so I'll be going for the 'glamourous look'! Mum is also a lot better too, hopefully things will remain that way!
I will bring the corn, and we'll see how it goes! I also have a bag of goodies for the children, Andy, you can use them as prizes for the pace egging etc., (which may happen if we dont mention it) and to put around the breakfast table on Sunday.

Hmm, don't want to do anything risky like report progress, but, well, the ebay fridge is installed. Gas successfully ignited. 12V seems to draw current - although it nearly gave me a heart attack when I went to connect the igniter and the lights in the van went dim - I was suspecting a nasty short somewhere, but it turned out to be someone had put an extra connector on the 12V switch, and paralleled it up to the igniter presumably so the fridge would run on the internal leisure battery without a running car having to be connected. Both dangerous (because the wiring is too small for the current a fridge on 12V takes) and likely to flatten a good leisure battery in half a day. Running on mains now with the thermostat not too frantic and we'll see what the fridge temperature is in the morning. I found the manual on the Dometic site.

Fidjit, how did you crack the block, and what is the vehicle?

On to music, I've found the words to the Princess Alice, and been able to download a verse and the chorus, so I maybe practising that on you-all at Easter if all goes well....

Battery still NBG despite attempts to deep cycle to knock the sulphates off. I wonder if it's worth a few quid on those magic desulphating pills. Shitty letter written to suppliers of battery (PM me if you want me to email you a copy to adapt for your own use), reply awaited. Source from a cheap replacement leisure battery found, leave it to next week to buy. Fridge showing 3 degrees inside after night on mains at warmest thermostat setting, promising but it was cold out. Sun now out, fridge running on gas at cold thermostat setting, we'll see how well it's doing by lunchtime (9.20am UK time as I type). Water heater successfully ignited (third go, bad contact at fuse to controller first two goes). Gas fire successfully ignited (third go). The piezo doesn't work so it's "match in a deep hole" and then screw sight glass on quickly. First go I let it go out by letting go gas valve too quickly. Second go I had not put gas valve back to the "ignite" setting and produced a real flammenwerfer: that was nearly "Thank you all and good night".

Gas bottles full. Speakers for sub for in-van-hifi ordered. Wiring for hifi needed , but that will only take half an hour. Mount head unit graphic and sub - maybe an hour.

Table clips. I'd like to find somewhere else for the table when not in use, but that's a 3-D jigsaw.

Flapping fibreglass under kitchen - probably half an hour (strip of ally if I can find one, long bolts, No More Nails, penny washers and nuts on from inside....)

I hope the new catches for the front window will arrive today, and while I'm fitting those I'd better try to see how far the water damage has gone in that corner. If, as I think, it is recent, I should be able to seal (new catches) dry (sunshine) and re-glue. But sealing and drying are the urgent bits. Problem may be how much internal trim I have to move to see the extent of the problem. If it is very localised, stanley knife to detach lifted laminate, evostik and replace might be good enough...

Floor-re-injection will have to wait.

Brakes may have to wait, hell a Volvo will stop anything without much help.....

Oh yes, and send the cheque....

Oh dear, oh dear - I really didn't want to join van watch but some ****** fool was driving too close behind us in the fog yesterday morning. We slowed and stopped when the car two in front of us stopped to turn - the idiot behind went straight into the back of us. Jack is really fed up - he'd already spent ages laying on a cold, wet road a fortnight ago mending the back bumper that somebody had damaged whilst we were parked up and out of the van. Now he has to completely replace it with a new one - vast initial expense and/or very lengthy insurance claim forms to fill in. He's away with work next week, and times fast running out before Miskin! At least there was no physical injury to us or Zak. Haven't tested the fridge, etc., that is at the rear of the van to see whether the jolt has done any damage - but we may also need to join Van/Fridge watch.

OK my turn to join van watch. Went out to ours to hide something this morning and spotted that I seem to have been hiding half the contents of the house since last Summer in an effort to keep house tidy. Nothing new here but usually this means I have to unhide it all into the living room or gagrage when we go away. However this only worked while the garage was still standing (wind demolished it and insurance company still not got finger out). I now find the living room is full of all the stuff that used to live in the garage and incidently the shed as they are gong to have to demolish that to rebuild garage (???)so where do I hide contents of caravan? Answers on a postcard please :0)))

Lots of people give up trying to give away knackered caravans, so if one such can be found and you have space to put it, and it can safely be moved, you might finish up watching TWO vans, one for storage and one for towage!

It is also common to find old sheds and greenhouses free to removers, sometimes pre-cast concrete garages, too.

I looked at the prices of port in the supermarket on Friday. That's an expensive luxury. What brands are people taking and have they found cheap but good quality sources? So far I have been unable to resist a bottle of mead for the occasion, but what proof should mead be? I think I may have bought a brand wannabee. Cheese will have to be bought just before departure.

At least that's my choice. Others bring whatever it is you fancy - Doesn't have to be Port - a beer or two from Nellie Deans will do if that's what you want.

Peronally, I don't mind what cheese you bring - let's have a little party anyway.

I hope the idea is still OK with Miskin Nan as the only caveat I have is that we should not clash with any of the other things that will be occurring.

Aah've found www.drkinkshop.com and it's canny (Aah cannit dee blue clickies yet)

Aah've tekkin' a likin' te Fonseca Bin 27 since Monsewer Vectis and me sampled a bottle a year or so ago. Drinkshop were doin' 6 bottles at £8.49 per bottle (reduced from £9.95) and it's lovely stuff.

Also got some Taylors LBV and Delaforce LBV at VERY reasonable prices.

Me 35 year-old Strathisla single malt is a bit mair expensive but it'll be with me at Miskin alang with a very nice Coleburn Speyside single.

Give Drinkshop a gander - There's some real bargains in there occasionaly

Petit Munster is a very nice cheese. I tned to eat it too ripe by gourmet standards. Will you bring the carraway seeds to go with it?

I reckon I'll bring that mead as a curiosity, and a small selection of halfway decent supermarket cheeses.

Van hifi nearly complete, sub to go. Awaiting delivery of sub. Can't test without sub and proper battery as TP2 power supply without battery in circuit is obviously unsmoothed and causing audio hum. Incidentally, Fidjit, I have measured and TP2 does produce 14.4 volts DC.

TV and hifi aerials nearly sorted. TV power supply nearly sorted.

Front window now closes and opens again - and the wood appears sound around it.

Dining table relocated.

Alas there has been more water ingress around the rear bumper than I thought. Bumper re-attachement sort of functional, but works of insulation and waterproofing to go, and I think this is the beginning of the end for the van. It simply is not worth gutting the back of the van to fix rot near back bumper and under shower-room. The catch-22 is that if I do have to get a better van, I'm going to have to start wrecking it by removing interior trim to build guitar shelves...

I think we may be nearly ready....

Just completed the 'shake down' of the caravan this weekend - touch wood everything working except rear offside stop light. Probably a bad connection or damp or a bulb failure - nothing drastic so my caravan watch has not been a bad experience. It was fun in the wind last night though, and towing back today was exciting. Port in, scotch in, digestive biscuits in, beer and wine sorted, just the cheese for last minute purchase. Less than 3 weeks now - yippee.!!

Soo, chickwatch news here. Our reporter in the field (well the back bedroom actually) has news that over the weekend, while Mum and Dad were away at Crediton, the humidity in the incubator dropped. We hope that this will not be too drastic, but have had to remove one egg due to signs of damage.

'Candling' happens tonight (you thought we had such quiet lives here in the country!) and we should know how many eggs are looking like hatching, so will keep you posted.

Actually, I don't know where I can get hold of any petit munster...I've not come across it myself. I like milder cheeses. As far as RAT-W goes the nastier and smellier it is the more he likes it! We don't really have anywhere to get hold of any decent cheeses, though I will still bring some locally made Leicester. The rest will have to be from Tesco.

I ahve to bottle my elderberry from a couple of years ago and see how that is, and the sloe gin and strawberry vodka might go nicely with a bit of cheese

Miskin at Easter 07 is cancelled.

Following, in our view, over zealous application of powers embodied in the new licencing act, we have been forced to cancel Miskin at Easter for this year. We have been through lengthy complicated meetings and hearings, but we always believed we would succeed, sadly not this time. Please don't ask questions, or offer suggestions, we have fought very hard and been around most routes. Furthermore, any speculation or laying of blame could very easily upset the delicate negotiations we are involved in to secure the
future of Miskin at Easter. Please bear in mind that the situation is such that any impromptu gathering in the Miskin area during Easter could also jeopardise our future hopes.

You will appreciate the size of the problem in informing so many people. Please pass this information on to anyone you know who might have been planning to come to Miskin "on spec".

You will appreciate how heartbroken we are by this decision.

Thank you for the amazing support you have given us over the years, we will be back.

Damn! My heart goes out to you, Miskin Man. Those of us who have done no more than plan and play fix-a-van etc will all be disappointed, but for you it must be devastating.

In the fullness of time I would like to know why you could not be covered by a TEN - I thought the "once a year" thing was exactly what TENs were for. Many here would, I imagine, like to wrote to your local authority to query their view of the law - but in your own time.

I, too, would like to write to the local authority. I even have the letter composed in my head. Can you let us know if and when we can do so? I wasn't going to be abusive but just explain what Miskin is to so many of us. Shady wants to write too. She is devastated. She says it's the only place she gets to see many friends, particularly Maddie and Lizzie.

All the best luck with the negotiations and anything we can do......

I know you all want to help and vent your disappointment on somebody. But this is the very last thing we need at the moment.

My statement was carefully worded,
" Please don't ask questions, or offer suggestions, we have fought very hard and been around most routes. Furthermore, any speculation or laying of blame could very easily upset the delicate negotiations we are involved in to secure the future of Miskin at Easter.

When the time is right I will rally the troups, but until then just shout at the wall or me, anybody but the official world.

I am sorry to see any event cancelled because of licensing laws.

Following, in our view, over zealous application of powers embodied in the new licencing act, we have been forced to cancel Miskin at Easter for this year.

I am sure everyone will respect your wishes regarding the local authority, but if any local authority are applying the law in an overzealous way then the only way that this can be stopped is by pointing the stupidity to a wider audience in particular members of Parliament.

A number of people are in frequent correspondence with their local MP about the absurdities of this act (including me) and we are constantly asked for examples.

Is is possible to tell us the details of what the actual problem is? Or even what sort of licence you applied for?

I understand any reluctance to do so.

Why o why? The best festival of the year. This government has hit rock bottom as far as I'm concerned. At the moment we are fighting to stop a local pub (in a residential area) being turned into a late night 'gentlemans club' with a 5a.m. closure, and we know what that means!! Deeply sorry to hear the bad news. I was hoping to make Miskin for the first time this year. After folowing this thread from it's begining and having Miskin recomended by many of my friends who are regular attenders, it's a big disapointment. I'm sure all the port and cheese won't go to waste. Will miss the sight of Geordie Porgie jumping the broom.

This bureacracy makes me angry/worried, because in Scotland we don't have any of it right now, and I'm deeply concerned that Wastemonster will try to force it on us. We run countless musical events through the year, freely and openly, in any venue we choose, any time, without needing a single permission beyond PRS.

Why don't you all hit the haughs of Coldstream (about a mile over the border), Longtown, Gretna, Yetholm, Jedburgh or somewhere suitable and stage a public protest by doing the entire lot without licencing or any worries? A hell of a way to go. Or do a mass ferry transit to Ireland where you are free to do the same. Or Brittany.

Aah've just owned up te Mrs P aboot the 'Silver Wedd'n' Surprise'

Miskin 2007 has been cancelled. I'm closing this thread because history has shown that there is no way to discuss a topic like this at Mudcat in a peaceable manner. I have deleted the discussions of this matter that have taken place, and I will not permit further Forum discussion of the Cancellation of Miskin 2007. Nonetheless, I think it is important that the full story be told. This source tells the story. Please note that I have some question about the credibility of the story because I found essentially the same story with two different bylines, purporting to come from two different newspapers. However, it does appear that the stories are at least partially true. I have invited Miskin Man to respond, but I do not intend to allow Forum discussion of the matter.
