Does anyone know the words to this one? The tune popped into my head and all I can recall is: "Mammys' little baby loves shortin, shortin. Mammys' little baby loves shortin bread".

Stole me de gal makin' shortnin' bread.
Got six months fo' de skillet
Six months fo' de led
Spent five years in jail eatin' Shortnin' bread.

I learned this in grade school music class(the '30s weren't high on PC. It also was popularized in the late '20s, early '30s by Rudy Vallee (I think)and was played fairly frequently on the radio when I was a kid.

The version we learned was sort of like the one given here.

Get out de skillet,
Get out de lead,
Mammy's gwine make a little short'nin' bread.
Da ain't all, she's qwine ta do
Mammy's gwine to make a little coffee, too.

Mammy's little baby loves short'nin', short'nin',
Mammy's little baby loves short'nin' bread.
(I think we might have repeated this)

Three little chillin, lyin' in bed,
Two was sick and de other most dead,
Mammy called de doctor,
De doctor said,
Feed dem chillin on short'nin' bread.

Chorus;

I stole de skillet,
I stole de lead,
I stole de gal to make shortnin bread.
Paid six dollahs fo' de skillet,
Paid six dollahs fo' de lead
Spent six months in jail eatin' shortnin' bread

Chorus:

Well "Word" used to be used in the 1980s or so in USA Black urban [and probably other American] communities to mean the same thing as "Right on!" or "Cool!" or some such affirmations.

Maybe that's what Guest meant.

And maybe not.

My mum used to sing that to me when I was a littl'un. Aaaaaaah! (That's "Aaaaaah" with falling intonation, by the way, indicating soppiness, not "Aaaaaaah" as in "I've just seen a monster").

Maine to Mexico? Boy, that was one hell of a drive... and were any children surviving at the end of it if they sang that all the way?

Mudcatter Black Walnut (Debbie Carroll) has a good version of it on her CD 'Up and over the moon', Merriweather records.

You haven't lived until you've heard THE CRAMPS version of the song "Shortnin' Bread". If you aren't familiar with The Cramps, you really ought to check them out on youtube.

Anyway the Cramps version appears to be slightly different- not surprising, the lead singer is usually completely hammered.

Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Three little children layin in the bed.
Two were sick and the other most dead.
Sent for the doctor, the doctor said,
"Feed those children on shortnin bread."
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
When those children layin in the bed
Heard that talk about shortnin bread,
They popped up well and started to sing,
Skipping round the room doing the pigeon wing.
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Put on the skillet! Put on the lid!
Mammas going to make some shortnin bread.
Thats not all shes going to do,
Mammas going to cook us some cocoa too!
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
I snuck to the kitchen, picked up the lid,
I filled my pockets full of shortnin bread.
I winked at the pretty little girl and said,
"Baby, howd you like some shortnin bread?"
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Mammas little baby loves shortnin, shortnin,
Mammas little baby loves shortnin bread.
Got caught with the skillet. Got caught with the lid.
Got caught with my mouth full of shortnin bread.
Six months for the skillet, six months for the lid
And five for stealing that fine bread

Well, a lot of things from centuries past seem politically incorrect these days.   In some cases they really were racist or stereotypical even back in the day, but idioms do change. "Darkie" was once the "politically correct" term, or at least seen that way by many -- as were "colored folk," "Negroes," "blacks," etc., at other times.
(A bit tangential to this thread, but it seems that, as a new "politically correct" euphemism -- e.g., "feebleminded" or "retarded" -- gains popular acceptance, it becomes the new pejorative and must be replaced by yet another "more politically correct" term. )
As for colloquialisms such as "mammy," "chillun'," "sho'tnin'," etc,., I think of those as being stereotypically "poor Southern America" than specifically African-American (slave) dialect. Maybe it's just because I kind of grew up with Li'l Abner and Mammy Yokum and the Dogpatch crowd. :)

Ennyhoo,
I love this song and use it as a standard (and very popular) part of my Mother's Day repertoire. I use a kind of bluesy beat and sing it this way:

Chorus:
Mama's little baby loves shortnin', shortnin',
Mama's little baby loves shortnin' bread. (Repeat)

Two little babies lyin' in bed.
One was sick and the other 'mos dead.
Call for the doctor, doctor said,
"Feed those babies on shortnin' bread."

(Chorus)

Put on the skillet, put on the lid,
Mama's gonna make a little shortnin' bread.
That's not all mama's gonna do;
Mama's gonna make a little coffee too.

(Chorus)

Three little children lyin' in bed
Smell that good ol' shortnin' bread,
They jump up an' down, dance & sing,
One even did the the pigeon wing.

(Chorus)

Put on the skillet! Put on the lid!
Mama's gonna make a little shortnin' bread.
Thats not all mama's gonna do,
Mama's gonna fry a little bacon too!

(Chorus)

As for changing "gonna" to "going to," "shortnin'" to "shortning," etc., I find that a bit too reminiscent of Stan Freberg's classic "Elderly Man River" from the 1950s. LOL

Re. changing fashions and political correctness and words of songs and so on, at school in the early eighties we still got "Polly Wolly Doodle", which included the lines,

"I came to a river and I couldnt get across,
(singing "polly-wolly-doodle" all de day),
So I jumped on a nigger cos I thought he was a hoss,
(singing "polly-wolly-doodle-all-de-day")

I regret to say that we all substituted for the N word the name of a particular teacher, which wasnt right at all. He was of Indian origin, not African.

The British serving in India and elsewhere referred to
East Indians, Egyptians, Polynesians, and other non-whites as niggers, so the substitution in the song is not entirely wrong.
The following are quotations from the Oxford English Dictionary:

Lord Dufferin, 1857- "This relationship with Polynesian niggers ...."
Treveyan, 1865- "In the eyes of the English planter ...bazaar-porters and Rajahs are niggers alike, one and all."
Melbourne newspaper, 1891- "The natives of Queensland are nearly always spoken of as 'niggers' by those who are brought directly into contact with them."

Thread 51174 and the others linked at top have other versions and tons of discussion of "Shortnin' Bread."

By the way, is "short'nin' bread" ("shortening bread") the same thing as "shortbread?"

If not, exactly what is it?

Genie, no, it is not. Shortbread is much richer.

The slave-po' sharecropper shortnin' bread was flour (often corn), lard and/or drippings, perhaps salt, prepared stove-top in a skillet with lid, and served hot with molasses or sorghum syrup. It was rapid, and satisfyingly filled empty stomachs. Also look for saltin' bread in the threads linked above.

In thread 20217 (linked above, recipe search) a few attempts were made at recipes, but when eggs, refined sugar, spices, etc. get into it, one is stepping into the realm of the more affluent, or more recent cookery. It is doubtful that anyone in America has made or eaten the shortnin' bread of the desperately poor since the days of the Great Depression.

Now, how close is short'nin' bread to hush puppies?

Genie, I hesitate to comment on hush puppies. My wife is from Georgia, and I want to live. Actually, I like them. These two recipes should get you started.

The origin:
The hound dogs that went on hunting forays or just went along as companions were always hungry. When their masters fried fish for dinner, they started yelping and barking as soon as they caught the smell.
To shut them up, the owners dropped lumps of their corn meal batter into the fish pan, and then tossed the fried lumps to the dogs with the command, "Hush, puppies!"

This recipe is a civilized version in that it is not made with old fishy drippings and doesn't taste of dead fish.

HUSH PUPPIES

1 1/2 cups stone-ground white corn meal
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg, well-beaten
3/4 cup milk
1 small onion, grated
Fat for iron skillet frying (or deep-fat fryer)

Sift together corn meal, baking powder, and salt. Mix egg, milk and onion in a bowl. Combine with dry ingredients and drop from a spoon into hot fat. When the Hush Puppies get crisp and golden (1-2 minutes), lift from fat with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
Usually served with fried fish in the South, but makes fine tid-bits (if kept bite-sized) to serve with drinks, pot-luck, as a snack, etc.
Be sure and use a screen to keep spatter down.
Recipe is from "The American Heritage Cookbook," vol. 2, ed. American Heritage, 1964, American Heritage Pub. Co. These volumes are a good history of American Cooking, with recipes in vol. 2.

COASTAL HUSH PUPPIES

These use only 1/2 inch of smoking hot grease in the iron skillet.
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped
2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 very large spoon of flour
2 heaping teaspoons baking powder
Pinch salt
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons melted Crisco

Mix well the dry stuff, onion and bell pepper. Add buttermilk and egg, whipped together.
Get 1/2 inch of grease smoking hot in a heavy fry pan and drop the mixture in by the spoonful. Brown one side, turn and brown the other.
"If you got a yappin' dog or a hungry man this ought to shut'um up."
E. M. Mickler, compiler, 1986, "White Trash Cooking," The Jargon Society.
A great regional cookbook, ever'thing from cracklin corn pone to oven-baked possum, cooter pie and gator tail.

Hello:

Thank you all for a truly engaging and enlightening discourse. I was lookiing for the song to add to the end of a performance I am creating...

For me this lil song was to be a "warm" "loving" comforting note to end a much more striking spoken word piece on...but for me now, it is not so "warm & fuzzy".

I never took the time to research it before.

My grandmama (God rest & bless her sweet soul) and my wonderful mama used to sing that lil tune to me when I was a baby. I remeber those time quite fondly.

I see that WE have all been deep...deep...deep ass-leep for much longer than we think.

THANK YOU!

I may still use it in some way...I am not sure.
