Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Rapparee Date: 09 Mar 11 - 11:02 PM Flynn's White Soda. Don't ask and I won't throw up. It was in the same category as Vernor's Ginger Ale is. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Little Hawk Date: 09 Mar 11 - 01:29 PM Diet drinks are universally awful tasting, and the truly ironic thing is that they are probably quite a bit worse for your general health than the regular sugared drinks. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Beer Date: 09 Mar 11 - 01:24 PM No luck Bobad, the better half doesn't know. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: frogprince Date: 09 Mar 11 - 01:01 PM There was a whole dark period of history when any diet soft drink that I knew of was "sweetened" (poisoned?) with sacharine. Every so often, some one would serve me a soft drink without warning me that is was the "diet" version. It never took more than a mouthful to tell that something was seriously wrong. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: bobad Date: 09 Mar 11 - 12:59 PM Beer, there also was a real good ginger beer in the Townships but I don't remember the brand name, it came in a brown bottle -- maybe Judy remembers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Beer Date: 09 Mar 11 - 12:47 PM Bobad, that is the one. I will bring you back a few bottles next time I visit. http://www.bulls-head.com/en/history.html Ed, "Sussex" is correct, sorry for the miss spelling and thanks for the Lime Rickey read. Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Lonesome EJ Date: 09 Mar 11 - 12:39 PM Dr Pepper had its origins in the early 1900s as a patent remedy for constipation. The old labels used to display a clock face with 10, 2, and 4 in bold print. Those were the times of day you were supposed to imbibe in order to stay regular. Now I like Dr Pepper, but the flavor that many people object to in it is associated with its supposed anti-constipation properties....prune juice. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,Spleen Cringe Date: 09 Mar 11 - 12:12 PM When I've been to India the soft drink of choice is a home grown equivalent of Coke called "Thums Up" (no "B"). It truly is vile: it's apparently supposed to taste like a cross between Coke and the betel nut... say no more. Similarly unpleasant and almost radioactive in hue is the lime drink, Limca, which apparently was sold to India by the Italians when it was discovered that it was too carcinogenic for domestic consumption. This story may or may not be true... |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Ed T Date: 09 Mar 11 - 11:12 AM Beer, could you mean Sussex Ginger Ale (I was once told that the name sounds funny in French)? Sussex I believe Seaman's in PEI (now owned by one of the big soft drink companies) still produces Lime Rickey.Lime Rickey |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: bobad Date: 09 Mar 11 - 10:56 AM Beer, I remember Bryant's Bull Head ginger ale from many years back in the Townships. I thought it disappeared a long time ago -- glad to hear it's still around -- I loved it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Beer Date: 09 Mar 11 - 10:44 AM My all time favorite drink was one from Nova Scotia called "Lime Rickey" Don't know if it is made any more. my second was "Success Ginger Ale" from New Brunswick. However, last time I was down that way I bought a bottle of it and I don't like it any more. Must have changed the recipe. I did find a great replacement in the Eastern Townships of Quebec called "Bull Hear Ginger Ale". Small company making a great ginger ale. Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Charmion Date: 09 Mar 11 - 09:42 AM EdT -- Golden Glow is a nightmare from Halifax circa 1976; only the young could drink that stuff and walk away. Patsy -- Pernod is strictly for people who like it, and those who like it, like it a lot. It is best served over ice with a little water. I will happily take responsibility for your entire life's share of Pernod and all its cousins: absinthe, anisette, arak, ouzo, pastis, raki ... |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 09 Mar 11 - 09:29 AM Ice Cream Soda with a float of ice-cream has to be my all time favourite and is usually a hit with most of the youngsters I've known. You can experiment different flavoured ice-creams with lemonade and it keeps them amused for a while. Least favourite non-soft drink has to be Perno I only tried it once and I was ill for days - nasty stuff, never again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: raredance Date: 09 Mar 11 - 12:44 AM Sprecher's Red Apple soda. Sickingly strong artificial apple flavor with a load of cinnamon in a bright red fluid. I tried mixing it 1 to 3 with Coke but it still overwhelmed. Threw the last bottle (of a 4 pack)away |

Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Maryrrf Date: 08 Mar 11 - 07:15 PM It's very strange that most Europeans detest root beer. Ice cold root beer from a frosty mug is a real treat on a hot day, and a root beer float - ice cold root beer in a frosty mug with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream, is just heavenly. But I've never met a European who tried root beer and liked it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Ed T Date: 08 Mar 11 - 03:59 PM Oops, The two worst alcohol drinks I ever tasted were:) |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Ed T Date: 08 Mar 11 - 03:57 PM I ran out of soft drinks. The two worst alcohol drinks I ever tasted was: 1) Green Chartreuse liquor (alcohol, sugar, 130 plants and flowers) Chartreuse 2) "Golden Glow" Apple Cider, (East Coast Canada, Hardcore Cider) it came in a big jug (in the 60's and 70's)with a handle on it, so you could chug from the bottle. Testimonials from: Golden Glow ""On my 16th Birthday weighing in at a hefty 135lbs I drank a liter in under an hour. I have never been sicker, I spent the night into the morning being hosed down in a shower vomiting violently. I broke every blood vessel in my face and ...pulled my muscles stomach to shoulder, I felt it for a month."" ""I was the only one of my friends to drink this steadily and not get terribly sick. They called us Glow Worms, we called it "Corpse Juice"" ""bumwash"" ""burp"" ""I just threw up a little in my mouth thinking about it"" ""bahahaha, the memories with Golden Glow... One Bottle would last me a couple nights hahaha! gets you drunk Off your ass... And a very ugly drunk at that"" ""This shit was the shit. Unfortunately they dont make the shit anymore. Dammit. It was great shit while it lasted though."" |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 08 Mar 11 - 02:49 PM I remember visits to the root beer stand when I was a kid- a special treat. Now that sassafras has been replaced for health reasons, the drink is no longer palatable. At one time (I was a teenager), ammonia cokes became popular at the soda fountain in my city. The sodajerk (no longer a polite term?) would add a few drops of ammonia to the coke. Was this popular elsewhere? My, where have those times gone? |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 08 Mar 11 - 12:40 PM By the way, does anyone remember making 'sugarelli water' by shaking a bit of liquorice about in a lemonade bottle full of tapwater? I seem to recall it was quite nice, but just after the war, anything was nice! |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Charmion Date: 08 Mar 11 - 12:39 PM In 1967, the Pure Spring pop company, which dominated the Eastern Ontario market up to about 1970, produced "Expo Chocolate" in celebration of the centennial exposition in Montreal that I'm sure you all remember. Expo Chocolate was dire -- almost as bad as Swiss Creme Soda, another Pure Spring product, which was fluorescent pink and tasted of sugar and not much else. Those were the only losers of the Pure Spring line. Their ginger ale was wonderful and I miss it sorely. Tab Cola was my first experience of artificial sweetener. It was, indeed, vile. Fresca has improved considerably since it first appeared; the grapefruit flavour assorted very oddly with its original sweetener, saccharine, but is now actually quite palatable. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 08 Mar 11 - 12:38 PM Yes Patsy, I remember those lemony crystals, but not their name. That PLJ, it would clean the drains beautifully. Probably neat citric acid! Irn Bru is lovely, drank a lot of it in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It would need to be freeze-proof up there! |

Maybe his dad thought they were alka selzer Lol when I was in college "Boones Farm Apple wine" was one of the favorites of the college crowd .. cause it cost 89 cents a bottle ... My gosh that was bad stuff, however it wasn't a soft drink. Get hammered on that stuff and you could spend the next day on the toilet |

Those of who were over 21 still kept being asked for ID in bars, which still rankles! I've never drank either cola or root beer (what the hell was that?)since. RtS Little ole wine (or real beer or Greek brandy)drinker me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 08 Mar 11 - 03:04 AM Eliza do you remember a drink made with lemon sherbert like crystals I think it was called Eiffel Tower, it had the loveliest lemony smell? The worst lemon cordial back in the day was called PLJ non- sweetened it was so sour it felt like it would take the roof of your mouth off. It was designed that way as part of a diet to make anything sweet taste revolting (I think!). As a little girl I used to dare myself to drink it and keep from wincing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: LadyJean Date: 08 Mar 11 - 12:34 AM A genuine cherry Coke, made at a soda fountain with cherry and Coke syrups is one of life's joys. Cherry Coke from can or bottle tastes like cough medicine. IBC made a cherry cola that tasted like the real thing. But they've stopped. Instead they're offering black cherry, which isn't anything like as good. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Rapparee Date: 07 Mar 11 - 10:00 PM My nephew was drinking cherry-flavored Mountain Dew. Of course, he is still young.... Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST Date: 07 Mar 11 - 06:22 PM Well, I only like diet sodas (diet coke and diet ginger ale especially) because now the regular sodas taste too sweet. I don't drink straight soda all that often. At home my favorite drink is iced tea mixed with diet ginger ale - it gives the tea some fizz and zip. And I often make my own 'sodas' - seltzer water mixed with some orange juice, cranberry juice, etc. I do enjoy fizziness! |

Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: ClaireBear Date: 07 Mar 11 - 04:14 PM I must agree about Moxie. I wanted to like it, and I've tried twice, but I think I'm done. I had a Russian blackcurrant soft drink that was fairly vile recently, too, but the Moxie was far worse. Has anyone here ever tasted that six-pack of bottled soft drinks flavored like the components of Thanksgiving dinner? I'm thinking the turkey gravy one must really be something....but I can't say for sure. I am strangely fond of Cheerwine, but that may be temporary insanity. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 Mar 11 - 03:49 PM I've been reading lotsa detective/lawyer/court books. Every damned time someone reaches for a drink that has no alcohol, well, be gollied, it's a Diet Coke. I think some folks got no tastebuds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: PoppaGator Date: 07 Mar 11 - 03:43 PM Only one responder named TAB, far and away and hands-down the most awfullest soft drink ever. NASTY stuff! The only explanation I can imagine is that too few of us are old enough to remember it. Tab was one of the very first artificially-sweetened "diet" sodas and had the most obnoxious aftertaste. It was a Coca-Cola product and supposedly "the same" as Coke but with saccharine instead of sugar, but it really didn't taste anything at all like regular Coca-Cola. What it tasted like, I suppose, was saccharine. Female consumers bought it for it "non-fattening" properties, but consumption of Tab was virtually unknown among boys and men ~ not at all like today's Diet Coke, which is very popular among people of all genders (especially software developers, who are apparently conscious of the sedentary nature of their occupation and the subsequent need to cut calories). |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST, topsie Date: 07 Mar 11 - 03:27 PM I very rarely drink soft drinks now - too sweet. Back in the 1950s I used to love tizer, it had a lovely caramel taste as far as I can remember, but either my taste buds have changed or the taste of tizer has changed, because after reminiscing about it recently I bought a bottle. It was horrid. No other flavour apart from sickly sweetness. I used to know an elderly Scottish lady who couldn't drink tea for medical reasons so when other people were having tea she would have a cup of hot water. She called it 'silver tea'. |

Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 07 Mar 11 - 02:38 PM That's interesting, EdT. I've been drinking a whole pint of milk daily, sometimes TWICE a day, all my life, I adore it. (Full milk that is.) But I don't think people do nowadays, they just put a drop in their tea or coffee. In school, we were all provided with a third of a pint in a glass bottle (just after the War) None of my friends (of all ages) actually drink a glass of milk. Yogurt is very popular here, but generally 'low fat' YUK! I don't much like drinking fizzy drinks or alcohol, so milk is my 'tipple'. |
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever From: Ed T Date: 07 Mar 11 - 02:29 PM ""How CAN people drink skimmed or even semi-skimmed milk? When I was a girl, it was given to the pigs!"" I grew up on a farm and we also gave skim (separated) milk to the pigs. It was not that it did not taste good. The only reason was there was no local market for drinking milk, we could only sell cream, to make cheese, ice cream etc. And, we had too much for ourselves and our neighbours, who also had dairy cattle. Today, in Canada, there is a supply marketing system. Unless farmers have a milk quota, they cannot sell milk to the dairies. Quotas are fixed, and expensive to purchase. That keeps the price in stores controlled and high. |
