And that part of the First Amendment was really an afterthought. It was proposed in early drafts, elsewhere, and was moved there "for convenience."

When the delegates to the original convention took the Constitution home for approval, it was returned by more than half of the "states" (some technically called themselves something else) with the SPECIFIC CONDITION that their ratification was only valid on addition of the first half of the First Amendment.

An early version of the "Freedom of Speech" clause, mirrored in a couple of State Constitutions, said, in effect, that "the right to PRINT anything you wish" should not be infringed.

Since the newspapers were the only ones with enough money to complain, they largely ruled the warping of the original meaning into whatever it is considered to be now, so thank - or blame - them for any confusion.

The airwaves, BTW, are owned by the American people... They are not private, like cable... If some cable station wants to put filthy mouthed people on, fine... Supposedly losing these sponsors is like losing a few fries from the bag. And most of these are local radio station sponsors not sponsors of Limbaugh's program. He claims two new sponsors are joining him in about two weeks. Sounds like a challenge to me.

More and more, including JC Penney and Capital One. The Atlantic (second link there) says that a couple of bands have banned him, too.

Mitt Romney has said very little on the topic, could it be because Bain Capital is part-owner of Clear Channel?

Finally, does boycotting = censorship? I don't think so. I think it's free speech all around. You're free to speak, not free to have someone who disagrees with your speech pay for it. Wouldn't those conservatives agree?

I have plenty of empathy for Ms Fluke and the very unpleasant spot she's been put in by Rush, 999. I've always thought Limbaugh was a truly horrible man, and his behaviour beyond the pale. He's like a human slug.

But I don't plan to spend much of my time focusing on him and the seamy stuff he does. I'm a lot more worried about things like the prospective attack on Iran, global high finance maneuvers, etc.

Limbaugh is a flyspeck on the windshield of life.

Bobert asked, "What will the wackos do when he's gone???" Oh, well...his particular set of wackos will do exactly as they do now when he's gone. In his absence they will find someone very similar to replace him. He's temporary...just like all USA presidents are.

I'm a lot more worried about what a large consortium of multinational corporations and giant international banks and military powers will do than about what Rush Limbaugh will do. He's a noisy distraction. He likes getting lots of attention. That's his job. If his present rotten behaviour toward Ms Fluke gets him the "wrong kind of attention" and ends up damaging or destroying his career...well, I wouldn't be a bit sorry to see that happen. He's probably gambling that it will boost his career in the longrun.

And I've already spent way more time talking about him than he's worth to me to talk about...so I think I'll leave it at that.

Netflix is another that says they don't specifically purchase advertising on his show, just network bundles, and that they're pursuing making sure their ads are not used.

You Mainiacs might be happy to learn that Downeast Energy has had WGAN pull its ads from the show.

ThinkProgress puts the count of advertisers responding at 30.

A report yesterday on MSNBC put the count of sponsors who've dropped out at 9. I believe AOL was the latest one included in that count.

In an apparently complete quote of the "apology" Limbaugh said that it was his "normal procedure" to make absurd statements to emphasise the absurdity of things." I take that to mean that all his advocacy of Republican absurdities means that he's really a "closet Democrat" and it has been his intention to show how that Republicans (in general) are pretty absurd.

Once one assumes it has all been intentional misdirection (the only way his "apology" has any meaning), maybe he's been a real success and we just didn't understand his "mission."

I think more people should be aware of this admission of the new stance he has taken, so they'll understand that he really thinks the opposite of whatever he says (at least that's what he said, but maybe he meant something else).

John Stewart had a really good spot on it. I think he's spot on in his point that this is not unexpected for Rush, the problem being even more that candidates, elected officials, and conservative media members see nothing wrong with it.

(And, after actually seeing the clip with Santorum's comment on the statement being "absurd", he's lost what few points he had on the topic with me. When you read it as I've just put it there, you can frame it as being "absurd!", with some sense of outrage. The way he actually said it was dismissive, as in "it's just a joke and that's the way he is.")

Well, it was announced this morning that Downeast Energy, a natural gas company based here in Maine, was pulling its ad for the "talk" show at WGAN-radio. I would think that a natural gas company would appreciate Rush's periodic outbursts but I guess they think methane and propane are incompatible.

I had a look at Josepp's "Conservative Commune" link (of 04 Mar 12 - 02:02 PM); I can't help suspecting that the photo of Ms Fluke has been Photoshopped to make it look like she has a faint moustache (she certainly doesn't look like that in other images I've seen of her). I have a feeling that they've tried to subtly (sort of) make her look "un-feminine" and unattractive -- in order to prompt an unreasoning, gut reaction of dislike and uneasiness (without actually going so far as to draw a cartoony moustache on her, which would come across as just being childish).

It shouldn't surprise me, I guess... but I do find it incredibly disturbing and unsettling that people (besides Limbaugh) are resorting to such crass, underhanded tactics.

While I don't deny there are bad apples in every "basket", I also don't think that Lefty commentators get anywhere near as nasty and OTT as Limbaugh, so when he blames his comments on them and apologises for "stooping to their level", it really takes the cake...

My email to the Citracal people has gone unanswered and they have not withdrawn their dollars. The company is part of Bayer. The product is a calcium supplement for women. Wonder what they are thinking...doesn't matter. I am changing brands this week. Maybe generic.

Meantime, the MOUTH that roared is claiming that he turns away millions of dollars in advertising revenue annually - get this - for political reasons. I thought he was a comedian?
