Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: GUEST,Peace Date: 06 Jul 08 - 11:27 PM I complained to the security people last time I went thru the metal detector. (It goes of due to the artificial hip. So one of the guys patted me down and paid extra attention to the hip/top of my tush area. In a loud voice I asked, "Why is it always a GUY? There are three beautiful gals right there--I pointed and smiled--and I get THIS guy handling my tush. What's wrong with this picture?" Got a chuckle from the gals, anyway. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: Peace Date: 06 Jul 08 - 10:44 PM OK guys. I gotta get this straight. I have a plane ticket that'll get me into Warren County Airport on Friday, July 18 at about 4:00 PM. It's just a short trip into Franklin from there. I knew the festival was being relocated, but why to Ohio? |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: KenM Date: 06 Jul 08 - 07:50 PM Hi, everyone. Amos has just sent me a CD of the Bruce Murdoch interview on CKUT the day before his January 4th concert in Montreal. The songs are great and, clearly, the years have not dulled Bruce's fine sense of humor. The only "sobering" part of the CD is Host Gerry's announcement of the weather that day.....-24 with a windchill in the -30s!!! Yikes!! There are many things I miss about Canada, most notably its social contract with its citizens, but winter weather is not one of them!! I'll be at the AppleMusicFest weekend in Franklin Center next weekend. I hope to see some of you there. Ken |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: KenM Date: 29 Jun 08 - 11:07 PM Thank you. I'm sorry to hear about Gagnier. I can still recall this big heavy set guy with a great voice and wonderful social conscience. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: bobad Date: 29 Jun 08 - 05:45 PM Ken, this thread from 2003 http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=63968#1070543 might be of interest, it is where Bruce first shows up, it also mentions Sean Gagnier's passing. It, by the way is what first brought me to Mudcat by looking for information on Bruce and has connected me to him, a friendship that I cherish greatly. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: KenM Date: 29 Jun 08 - 05:35 PM And to appear at the Apple Hollow Music Fest.......I'm looking forward to venturing north from southwest Florida for that event and to meet some of you there. Many of us probably shared some time and space in the Blue Lantern and the Yellow Door (and other venues) listening to Bruce many years ago. By the way, speaking of those times.......in the song "Snowden", Bruce has the line ".....Gagnier showed me the door.....". I presume he is referring to Sean Gagnier, who was a fixture on the scene back in the late sixties as well. I remember he and Bruce used to duet on Ewan McColl's "Bringing in the Fishes". Anyone know whatever happened to him? Much of this thread has dealt with what I presume is a self-produced CD version of Bruce's CBC album and I agree with the consensus that there are some great lyrics and singing on that album. I also think there were great moments on 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute despite the bad production (which many commentators have noted). Some of the political songs are as relevant today as they were then. In "Mary, You Are My Friend", Bruce writes, "........But now machine guns testify, that Hitler's back again All he's done is change his name, and perhaps go more insane....." and later, "......Traitors govern us, they're inventing, lies to hide their wicked smiles...." Man, if those words don't describe the current administration in Washington, what words could? "Lay Down Our Drums" can serve as much as a peace anthem today as it did in 1968. One of the nonpolitical songs "Justine's Blues" is stunning: "Justine's got the blues, she says it's good enough for her, She hopes it's good enough for you...." and, "I'd like to help, she means what she says, hell if she'd only tell me what she means...." To me, this song about the horrors of heroin addiction ranks up there with Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" from "Harvest" and Tom Paxton's "Cindy's Crying" from "Tom Paxton 6". I just realized that if this site is monitored by Homeland Security, those comments above about Bruce's political songs might land me on the "No Fly List" and I'll never get to the festival so I had better shut up before I did myself in deeper. ciao |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: Azizi Date: 29 Jun 08 - 08:57 AM Markus and Ken, welcome to Mudcat! It's great that you two were led to Mudcat because of Bruce's music. Like you and many others here, I look forward to hearing Bruce's latest songs by purchasing his new CD. ** olddude, that's good news about Bruce's website too! ** Ken, in your 28 Jun 08 - 06:15 PM post to this thread you said: "Just the other day, I heard myself singing "Jericho" in my head and decided to Google Bruce and discovered all this wonderful information". I'm curious which "Jericho" song you meant. I'm aware of at least two Bruce Murdoch "Jericho" songs: "Plains of Jericho" and "Rough Night In Jericho". I love the words to both of these song. It depends on my mood which one of them I prefer. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: KenM Date: 28 Jun 08 - 08:49 PM Adrien and Amos: Thank you for your notes and I'm now a member. Adrien.....no, I don't think we crossed paths, at least not at Douglas Hospital. I grew up in Verdun on First avenue between Wellington and LaSalle so I obviously always knew where the "The NutHouse" was. I did my undergraduate degree in Applied Social Sciences at Sir George Williams University and knew a number of people who did either internships or volunteer work at Douglas. Ironically, after I went west and got my MSW at the University of British Columbia, my first social work job was doing rural community mental health inn Saskatchewan. It is so neat to connect after all these years with friends/fans of Bruce Murdoch. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: Amos Date: 28 Jun 08 - 07:56 PM Ken: Bruce posts frequently here under the handle "Peace", and if you take on some member name or other and register, you can send him personal messages here. A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: Beer Date: 28 Jun 08 - 07:14 PM Ken, I don't think we crossed paths and hopefully not where I worked anyway. I was at Douglas Hospital for 35 years. Started there 1967. Bruce probably won't get to you for a bit but as soon as I hear from him I will pass the message. If you joined as a member I could send you a more detailed message. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: GUEST,Ken Date: 28 Jun 08 - 06:15 PM Hello........I'm just connecting to these various threads on mudcat concerning Bruce Murdoch. I went to Verdun High School at the same time as Bruce although we didn't know one another at the time. I distinctly recall him edging me out for the last spot on the VHS cross country team one year though I doubt he remembers that. Obviously, I have not, lol! Later, I followed his career at the many folk venues in Montreal in the late 60's. Lost touch with him when I moved to Vancouver in 1970 for graduate school and didn't see him again until the Northern Lights Folk Festival in Sudbury in either 1975 or 76 after I had begun my academic career at Laurentian University. Since then, I have pursued my academic career which has finally landed me here in Ft. Myers, Fl in southwest Florida. I have both the 33 1/3 and CBC albums and a year or two ago, I used a piece of software to transfer them to CD (minus the clicks and pops from frequent playing). I did the same with the "Singer-Songwriter Project" on Electra. Bruce, if you are following this thread and don't mind me sending copies......I take it that the cd you distributed in '05 was the CBC album. I woulld be more than happy to send a copy of that to anyone interested, if you give approval. Just the other day, I heard myself singing "Jericho" in my head and decided to Google Bruce and discovered all this wonderful information. Please let me know more about the forthcoming cd and about the live appearance "Beer" references in the last post. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: Beer Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:59 PM Hi Emma, hope all is well. New location for the festival this year and yes Bruce will be here to break it in. Olddude, Bruce called me about 6 weeks ago around 11 at night and said "what do you think of this". He picked up his guitar and sand a new one he had just finished writing. I was awestruck. unbelievable. He is hoping to have the c/d on sale at our festival. Hope he brings plenty because I have this feeling that the folks are going to love his recent writings. Wish both of you could make it. Adrien |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: Liar! (CD Review) From: Guldhamstern Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:51 PM Is there any chance in the world to get this CD? I could donate money or whatever it takes. I'm new here and don't understand how things works, who is who and the english grammar. So execuse me if i'm not wanted here with my demands. But I really like what i've heard of Bruce, the somewhat bad produced 33 and 1/3 and SSP, but I want more and the fact that everybody seems think that there is better music than that made by Bruce makes me even more frustrayed over not knowing what to do to get it. Please read this and try to understand a swede who not seems to understand. Markus |
