Subject: RE: Music for the end of the world From: Kent Davis Date: 10 Jul 07 - 12:10 AM One of my early childhood favorites was "Very Last Day" from the album "In the Wind" by Peter, Paul, and Mary. I would appreciate any corrections to the lyrics. I have the song on an LP, but no longer have a turntable, so I can't check the words. Very Last Day Stookey/Yarrow (refrain) Everybody's gonna pray on the very last day. Oh, when they hear that bell ring the world away, Everybody's gonna pray to the heavens on the judgement day. Verse 1: Well, you can sing about the great King David, And you can preach about the wisdom of Saul, But the judgement falls on all mankind, When the trumpet sounds the call. All equal and the same, When the Lord He calls your name. Get ready, brother, for that day. (Refrain) Verse 2: Well, one day soon all men will stand, His Word will be heeded in all the land. Men shall know and men shall see, We all are brothers and we all are free. Mankind was made of clay, Each of us in the very same way, Get ready, brother, for that day. (Refrain) Verse 3: Oh well the law is given and the law is known, A tale is told and the seed is sown, From dust we came; into dust we'll go, You know the Lord once told us so. Each brother take His hand, Heed the meaning of the Lord's command. Get ready, brother, for that day. (Refrain) |

We may not be perfect But heaven knows we try. But all around even our old friends put us down. Let's drop the big one and see what happens. We give them money But are they grateful? No they're spiteful And they're hateful. They don't respect us so let's surprise them; We'll drop the big one and pulverize them. Now Asia's crowded And Europe's too old. Africa's far too hot, And Canada's too cold. And South America stole our name. Let's drop the big one; there'll be no one left to blame us. Bridge: We'll save Australia; Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo. We'll build an all-American amusement park there; They've got surfing, too. Well, boom goes London, And boom Paris. More room for you And more room for me. And every city the whole world round Will just be another American town. Oh, how peaceful it'll be; We'll set everybody free; You'll have Japanese kimonos, baby, There'll be Italian shoes for me. They all hate us anyhow, So let's drop the big one now. Let's drop the big one now. |

Subject: RE: Music for the end of the world From: Bill D Date: 07 Jul 07 - 01:37 PM a song I've been singing for years...posted by Masato several years ago....and evidently, Lonnie Donnigan also did it. NOAH FOUND GRACE IN THE EYES OF THE LORD (Words and Music by Robert Schmertz, 1951) The Lord looked down from His window in the sky, Said, "I created man but I don't remember why. Nothing but fighting since creation day. I'll send a little water and wash 'em all away." The Lord came down to look around a spell, And there was Mister Noah behaving mighty well, And that is the reason, the Scriptures record, That Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. (Chorus) Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, And he landed high and dry. The Lord said, "Noah, there's gonna be a flood. There's gonna be some water and there's gonna be some mud. So take off your hat, Noah. Take off your coat. Get Ham, Shem, and Japheth and build yourself a boat." Noah said, "Lord, I don't believe I could." The Lord said, "Noah, get some sturdy gopher wood. Never know what you can do till you try. Build it fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high." Noah said, "There she is. There she is, Lord." The Lord said, "Noah, it's time to get aboard. Take of each creature a he and a she. And, of course, Missus Noah and your whole family." Noah said, "Lord, it's getting mighty dark." The Lord said, "Noah, get these creatures on the ark." Noah said, "Lord, it's beginning to pour." The Lord said, "Noah, hurry up and shut the door." The ark rose up on the bosom of the deep, And after forty days, Mister Noah took a peek, Said, "We're not moving, Lord. Where are we at?" The Lord said, "You're sitting right on Mount Ararat." Noah said, "Lord, it's getting mighty dry." The Lord said, "Noah, see my rainbow in the sky. Take all your creatures and people the earth. But be sure you aren't more trouble than you're worth." |

Why does the sea rush to shore? Don't they know it's the end of the world, 'Cause you don't love me any more? Why do the birds go on singing? Why do the stars glow above? Don't they know it's the end of the world. It ended when I lost your love. I wake up in the morning and I wonder, Why everything's the same as it was. I can't understand. No, I can't understand, How life goes on the way it does. Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don't they know it's the end of the world. It ended when you said goodbye. Beer (adrien) The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over (AKA "The Calendar Song) by Steve Goodman, John Prine Back in 1899, when everyone was singing "Auld Lang Syne" A century took a long, long time for every boy and girl. Now there's only one thing that I'd like to know Where did the 20th century go? I'd swear it was here just a minute ago All over this world. Chorus: And now the 20th century is almost over, Almost over, almost over The 20th century is almost over All over this world. All over this world, all over this world The 20th century is almost over, all over this world. Does anyone remember the Great Depression? I read all about it in True Confession I'm sorry I was late for the recording session But somebody put me on hold. Has anybody seen my linoleum floors Petroleum jelly, and two World Wars? They got stuck in the revolving doors All over this world. And now... The winter's getting colder, summer's getting hotter Wishin' well's wishin' for another drop of water. And Mother Earth's blushin'' 'cause somebody caught her Makin' love to the Man in the Moon. Tell me how you gonna keep 'em down on the farm Now that outer space has lost it's charm? Somebody set off a burglar alarm And not a moment too soon. Because... Old Father Time has got his toes a tappin' Standing in the window, grumblin' and a rappin' Everybody's waiting for something to happen. Tell me if it happens to you! The Judgment Day is getting nearer There it is in the rear view mirror. If you duck down I could see a little clearer All over this world! And now... |

And the music I happened to be listening to ? Bach's great C-minor Passacaglia, a massive, thundering great organ work which keeps grinding on the same doom-laden C-minor chord sequence for about a quarter of an hour. Somehow, the perfect accompaniment. Can anyone think of anything more appropriate ? |
