Three months since I started this thread, and I just found out that, against all odds, they've just found a bone marrow match for my friend Emru. It doesn't mean he's out of the woods, but (as McCoy once said to Kirk) it's turned an impossible situation into a fighting chance.

It worked for Mary (of PP&M), so maybe it'll work for him.

Anyway, thanks to all those who helped spread the concept of Bone Marrow Registry.

This speaks for itself, and gives me an excuse to refresh this for another day.

Not only are organs up for grabs, but Grab's up for organs. Specifically, breaking for parts when I cease to be a viable proposition, pumping out the odd pouch of blood, and any bone marrow they want. I did have a potential match once on the first round of matching for bone marrow, not long after I'd first signed up, but the follow-up test said no.

Note that in the UK there are two organisations you can sign up with for bone marrow - one is the National Blood Service (run by the NHS) and the other is the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust.

Graham.

"You must be between the ages of 18 and 60 to become a potential volunteer donor listed on the NMDP Registry. Age guidelines are not meant to discriminate. They are meant to protect the safety of the
donor and provide the best possible outcome for the patient."

I've blue-clickied a few of open mike's links.

Emru (the sick guy) and Tamu (his sister who turned out not to be a match) are most grateful for your response.

Below is the Bone Marrow Campaign from Myspace.

It was started by David Gate, step-father to young Yvette, in desperation to find a donor for his much-loved daughter.

David works tirelessly on behalf of Yvette (and others) and so often I see his Myspace light on, burning like a beacon, as he searches, makes new contacts, always hoping that 'tonight will be the night' that he may stumble across that one person he needs so badly, for his dear step-daughter. He's *determined* to find the person who can save her life.

There is an award-winning video on the page too, which they have made, telling Yvette's story, called 'Waiting For The One' So, if YOU have a Myspace page, please consider putting the video on there, together with David's page, for you never know who may click on your page and see that video, and it takes just ONE person to save the life of another. Time is fast running out for Yvette, (and others) but I pray that David *will* get there for her.

Myspace Bone Marrow Campaign

And if you are, like me, now 'too old' to be tested for Bone Marrow donation, then don't forget that being an 'ordinary' blood donor is still permissable and you are needed just as much, for other reasons. If you've not given blood before, it's painless and quick. I strongly recommend it, and they are always *desperate* for donors.

http://www.marrow.org/ the donor registry has over 10 million people who have offered to donate marrow. I believe there are 6 factors to match
and often members of the same family or race will be more likely to match. sometimes 5 out of 6 is as close as they can get.

here is the northern california contact http://www.bloodsource.org/
and here is their marrow info page:

http://www.redcross.org - these folks have blood donation,
but might also know about marrow issues

Rick Hendrick, the NASCAR racing teams owner got involved in helping the National Marrow Program when he developed Leukemia in the '90's. This is the same site linked above but is worth going back to if you haven't read it. There are menus to follow with hot links that explain all the rules, the myths, the procedures.....ie, you can be 60 and donate if you're in good health. And they take money too. Good out fit that has saved many, many, lives.

Hendrick Page but follow the menu stuff to answer all your questions

They prefer the young stuff, before the long term effects of alcohol and such take effect.

Besides, the older you are, the more you need it yourself!

Donor centers in the US by state.

I'm too old to donate marrow, but I do regularily donate blood. And my organs are up for grabs as well after I'm finished with 'em.

I'd never thought about bone marrow donation, until a friend recently got sick. A young guy with a small kid. Apparently there's an international registry, usually run by whatever organization deals with blood donations. It's very hard to find an effective match, but the more people who sign up, the better the chances for the ailing.

Alas, I'm to old and decrepit to participate, but if you're under 45, this is a quick way to rack up some good Karma (or whatever). A pin-prick or maybe just a cotton swab inside the cheek is all it takes.

And the especially need people from ethnic minorities, who are under-represented in the data base.
