Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: GUEST,Wandering Minstrel (who ate my cookie?) Date: 31 Oct 08 - 08:54 AM The various Myst games have beautiful scenery, ingenious puzzles and often "rides" around an area as a reward. There are also several adventures by Lighthouse Games that have the same style, Barrow Hill, and Lights Out come to mind. Most of the Elder Scrolls games have good first person views of scenery. If you fancy something less fantasy-oriented, KotOR and Mass Effect are great Sci-fi adventures, Though if you hang about in space planet-gazing you will probably be blown to tiny pieces :( |

I'm a console gamer myself, but I have friends who are computer gamers, so I could probably come up with a pretty comprehensive list for you one way or the other. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Cluin Date: 29 Oct 08 - 09:03 PM I have owned and played previous versions of Warcraft, but I still always preferred strategy games over arcade-style shoot-em-ups of slash-em-ups. Warcraft had some strategy characteristics, but I preferred more open option city-or-empire-building SIMs. I worked with a bleary-eyed guy super-addicted to WoW and I asked him about it and he told me, "That game sucks at your soul." So I avoided it. I waste enough time on the computer as it is. I've seen the dawn come up enough times while playing CivIII.... "Just one more turn... just get this city established... just build a road to this feature...." |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: john f weldon Date: 28 Oct 08 - 08:01 PM The last really involving RPG was Dragon Quest (don't ask what number) which took at least 3-4 months to get through. Mainly exploration of a very large planet. Neat stuff, like the sun rising and falling as you played, and your shadow moving appropriately. Those who liked Myst and/or are Ashcan Alley fans may enjoy "Andie Vanguard's Quest for Rent", an on-line game which I'm hoping to have up in a week or so. It's a combined effort of my son and myself, an attempt to create a point-and-click game which will combine the idea of a comic book and a video game. I'm hoping that the concept of trying to dig up a month's rent will be more familiar to many people than, say, saving princesses or battling dragons. I'll keep you posted. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: katlaughing Date: 28 Oct 08 - 07:37 PM Our youngest daughter was really into Myst and its sequel, years ago. I got out the first CD and put it in this year with my 4.5 yr. old grandson, her son. He took one look and got through more spots than I ever did, picking up things along the way and getting doors to open, etc. I don't have much patience for the mystery stuff even though I love reading books of mystery. He's been gaming or watching her and her husband game since he was little, so I think he's wired for it. I prefer the books, too, Becky.:-) Way back when, we had Pyramid which worked on our TRS80. It was all text and it was a blast. Our kids loved it! So different from now. Do they have these kinds of things in Second Life? It seems it would be a natural for games? |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Slag Date: 28 Oct 08 - 07:13 PM I've toyed with the MOH series but right now I'm into WOW. Lots of cartoonish swordplay and monster slaying and chat. It is not as intense as MOH or Halo and it is very well done 3D animation. Blizzard has really created a beautiful environment(s). I have just installed EQ the first version but so far I have balked at the 11 hour patch download (dial-up). |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Oct 08 - 06:46 PM The most beautiful RPG I've seen for both a great storyline and vast amounts of gorgeous scenery to wander around in and explore is Oblivion (the Elder Scrolls series of games). If you have a good enough graphics card it is simply gorgeous. You can even see every leaf on the trees moving in the wind. Weather effects are great. Sun and shadow are well done. Both night and day are beautiful to look upon in that game. Buildings are also very well done, as are the many game characters and animals. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Skivee Date: 28 Oct 08 - 06:40 PM I used to play the MYST series. I even found that the problem solving aspects of the games helped me in the real world. I figutred out how to repair a large photographic processing machine using skills I learned in the second game. Of course, not much blew up in those games, but they were still pretty entertaining, and pretty. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Desert Dancer Date: 28 Oct 08 - 05:27 PM My son is into role-playing games and has been lobbying lately to buy onto World of Warcraft. He has also enjoyed the Suikoden series, and Final Fantasy, and Spore, lately. Online, he has enjoyed RuneScape, although I think that World of Warcraft trumps it for him. I discovered (or had confirmed) recently that to him the story is all: we went on a hike a couple weekends ago and he downloaded - 2 hours nonstop - the story in World of Warcraft. He's just as happy using game cheats to get through the puzzles in order to make his way through the story. I remember when he was playing Suikoden (as an elementary schooler), there was one character he was really into -- dressed up as him for Halloween; he said he liked him because "he was a caring person". He cried when he died in the game story. The obvious question is "why not just read a book"? I guess with the game you get the story along with interaction and visuals, so it's a different experience. He has read a couple of Starcraft inspire novels recently. Puzzling and interesting to a non-gaming (and fantasy book enjoying) parent. ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: irishenglish Date: 28 Oct 08 - 02:59 PM Love the strategy games like CIV 4 and those types. THe most recent type of game that my wife and I enjoy, because we can play them together (as in the same room, watching and helping each other out) are games like Broken Sword, Journey To The Center Of The Earth, Nibiru. I don't even know what you call the genre, but for fans of being amazed by graphics and puzzles-you have to walk around solving differing degrees of puzzles, unfolding some mystery as you go. Broken Sword has a great storyline, just a bit of a fantastical element, but also the feeling that it could be you involved, so depending on how well you do with mysteries, its up to you to figure it out. Lots of things like picking up objects, but then figuring out at the right moment how and what you should combine to be able to move ahead and progress. Its great because we can sit there and say-go over there, whats that thing on the ground? We just played a great one like that based on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. Great scenery, and voice actors-it was a lot of fun. My favorite first person shooter was No One Lives Forever-just the right mix of gunplay, storyline, with a campy 60's James Bond feel about it too. If I could only have one game though, it would be CIV, no question about it! |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Den Date: 28 Oct 08 - 02:48 PM Hi Cluin, what aspects of that particular game to you like. I'm fairly new to these types of games, still trying to get a feel for them. My kids play World of Warcraft. Is this similar? |

Subject: BS: Anyone into RPG's or MMO's? From: Den Date: 28 Oct 08 - 12:51 PM I mean the digital variety here. Can anyone reccomend any games they are involved or like? I find when I play games especially first person shooters eg "Medal of Honour", I find myself wandering off and checking out the scenery. So I guess any games that are grapically rich or allow you to explore others worlds country side etc. are good with me. |
