Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Genie Date: 10 Dec 08 - 05:04 PM The young father who lost his wife and two children in the crash is not blaming the pilot ============================================ Jet Crash Widower Begs for Help Coping Jet Crash Widower Begs for Help Coping By ELLIOT SPAGAT, AP SAN DIEGO (Dec. 10) - Overwhelmed with anguish, Dong Yun Yoon walked unsteadily to a pile of rubble where his home once stood and pleaded for advice on how to cope after losing his family. His wife, two children and mother-in-law were killed when a fighter jet lost power and crashed through their home and burst into flames. A day after the tragedy, Yoon held a news conference to ask guidance from people who have suffered "more terrible things." "Please tell me how to do it," he said Tuesday, surrounded by his pastor, sister and brother. "I don't know what to do." Yoon, sobbing into a tissue at the foot of his destroyed house, also asked for prayer for the jet's Marine pilot, who ejected safely from the F/A-18D Hornet after his training mission went awry Monday. "I don't have any hard feelings," Yoon, 37, told reporters. "I know he did everything he could." The military has given no official word on the cause of the crash, which incinerated two homes and damaged three others. U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, called on the Marine Corps on Tuesday to release the maintenance records of all its F/A-18D Hornet fighters. He said the fiery crash was apparently caused by power failure. "My understanding ... is that the engines failed, causing the aircraft to lose thrust," Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper said. ... The Rev. Kevin Lee, associate pastor of the Korean United Methodist Church that Yoon attended, identified the victims as Young Mi Yoon, 36; her daughters Grace, 15 months, and Rachel, 2 months; and her mother, Suk Im Kim, 60. Lee said Kim was visiting from South Korea to help her daughter move across town and adjust to the arrival of her second child. ... =========================================== |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: SINSULL Date: 09 Dec 08 - 09:32 AM Glad you are all safe. I grew up in Howard Beach, near Kennedy (then Idlewilde, and lived in constant fear of crashing planes. Sometimes you could see the people in the planes they were so low. So one day I go to school in Brooklyn and damned if a jet doesn't come down 1 block from my school. It had collided with another plane over Staten Island and crashed into the Pillar of Fire Church. One survivor, a little boy who landed in a snow drift, died later. Funny what you remember. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Genie Date: 09 Dec 08 - 04:53 AM I'm reading reports now that say that point to mechanical failure. Unfortunately, a pilot not being able to do anything to prevent the crash and really convincing himself of that fact are not the same thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Teribus Date: 09 Dec 08 - 01:21 AM "Could the pilot have diverted the plane into a different crash path had he not bailed out? Probably not," - Genie All would depend on what was wrong, the F-18 is "fly-by-wire", so you are most likely correct in assuming that the pilot could have done nothing about it. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Dec 08 - 11:24 PM Glad you're okay Amos! I gave serious consideration to Idaho at one point. Then I realized it was simply a case of gas, farted, and forgot all about it! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Rapparee Date: 08 Dec 08 - 10:58 PM Like what? Yeah, there's some snow but nowhere near as much as you think there is. We have clear, sunny skies more than 90% of the time; the temperatures aren't as extreme as you seem to think; we have running water and electricity; a University, and a music scene you wouldn't believe if I told you -- everything from blues to alt-rock. San Diego County's September unemployment rate was 6.4%; right now Pocatello has 4.4% and businesses are -- get this! -- hiring. We haven't had a shoot-out in nearly a week, the cost of living is about 10% UNDER the national average, houses are affordable (you could buy the one right next to mine -- built in 2000 by the ISU College of Technology and currently in foreclosure because the owner is an eejit), you could kayak anything from a creek to the largest reservoir in Idaho OR, should be be Wait, come to think of it, we've reached out 2008 quota of Californians. Better luck in 2009. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Amos Date: 08 Dec 08 - 09:45 PM There is a large dirt parking lot on top of the hill behind UC High, where I first gave Barky lessons n driving, peeling out, doing doughnuts and slamming on the brakes at speed, so she could get the feel of the thing. If he had managed to "aim" his corkscrewing jet there it would have ignited nothing more than a few necking freshmen or something. But you don't aim a jet doing cartwheels. A |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Rapparee Date: 08 Dec 08 - 09:39 PM Lordy, next December my nephew Joe will be stationed at Mirmar. I'm going to give him Amos's address...hehehehe. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Genie Date: 08 Dec 08 - 09:37 PM I knew the crash wasn't really near where you live, Amos, though I didn't realize Miramar was that close. Still, it's horrible for all those in the neighborhood where the plane crashed, in addition to those killed and their loved ones. Could the pilot have diverted the plane into a different crash path had he not bailed out? Probably not, but to sacrifice himself on that chance would be more than most humans could probably have done. You're right that he will be haunted by this, but I hope he does not assume unwarranted blame over it. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: katlaughing Date: 08 Dec 08 - 09:27 PM I just spoke to my niece's husband. It was close to where she works. She didn't see the crash, but did see a lot of the smoke, etc. Too close for comfort, imo! Amos, I am glad you are all okay. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 08 Dec 08 - 09:22 PM Don't move to Pensacola and expect it not to happen. That crash is eerily similar to one that occurred here about twelve years ago. I worked about a half-mile from the crash sight. Archived news story HERE. |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: Amos Date: 08 Dec 08 - 08:44 PM We got home shortly after he bailed and crashed. His jet destroyed two homes and killed three people. He's ruined for a pilot--he was a student. And he'll be haunted for years. The neighborhood has been buzzed by news choppers--the location was half a block from Barky's old high school, and about a mile from our house. We are all safe and sound, thanks for worrying! A |

Subject: RE: BS: F-18 crashes into San Diego house From: skipy Date: 08 Dec 08 - 06:03 PM He did not know how many people where aboard! Well it was a twin sticker, so probably 2! Anymore than that would be foolish to say the least. Skipy |
