3... my old man had a shack on The Bay of Quinty when we lived at CFB Trenton. Best part of the day was when we got home, laying on the hallway floor with our feet on the hot air register, smelling the Johnny cake and sausage cooking.

Bob, haven't you ever heard of fur-lined bosom holders?**bg** Or in my case, it would have to be fake-fur-lined.:-)

My cats were ecstatic this afternoon as it was warm enough, in the 40s, to let them out the window to their chicken coop. They acted like kittens running in and out!

My morning looked like this:

*Made my honey an awesome breakfast to help warm him up after he did outside chores

*Met my mom in town as she had work done on her car

*Started out to poke around in a rural furniture store and decided the roads weren't too great and we weren't in the mood for furniture shopping anyway

*Drove an hour south, had a wonderful Thai lunch (Pineapple Chicken and Chicken Panang)

Then it was afternoon and since this is about the morning, I'll leave it at that!!!   :)

The day was absolutely stunning in northern Pennsylvania, dry cold air, bright blue skies...a day to be out enjoying the world!

A month ago, we had more snow than we've had in the seven years I've lived here in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of California. We're 45 minutes northeast of Sacramento, at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 meters), so we actually get some winter here.
Today, we're having record WARM temperatures. It's 78o F. outside just now, or about 25o C. The skies are blue and clear, and it seems like Indian Summer instead of January. I'm hoping for more rain and snow - we've had too much drought lately, and that leads to summer wildfires.

But for today, it's perfect. Christina and I took a walk in the woods next door and enjoyed it all.

Fairly crappy.. got to work at 6.50am to find the H&S bod who did the PAT testing (electrical items) last night, failed to turn the power back on and only the Techs or Building Managers have access to the server room where the power switches are.

Spent the first hour fuming and the second hour rebooting the computer. Then I did my phone duty - 47 calls in 4hrs 15 - an average of one every 5 minutes - not a good morning.

It perked up though... I bought a new handle for my pickaxe on the way home.

Heard from my baby Beef Brother Marum a bit ago. He is on his way to a gig. He lamented that he might have to shed his shorts for long pants. I told him to bite me. He then talked about still being able to wear tee shirts.... I gave him another bite me. I told him that it is 7 degrees (F) here, my fingers aren't working worth a shit, I got done practicing on the Larrivee, put it in its rack...... It looks at me and says, "Is that all you got?????? I'm a big time guitar and I deserve better". I told it to bite me as well. This friggin' weather is a management trick, I am sure of it.

My credibility? Let me remind you , sirrah, that it is I who constantly and faithfully reminds you of the bizarre unreality of your cast of imaginary characters, and you, yourself, who keeps insisting that your simian flatfoot dick, your wandering giant hamster, your drunken ne'erdowell Canuck slob, and your fat has-been actor with the bad voice are actually real flesh and blood.

No, not Newfie. Rhode Islander actually. That'd be U.S.A. where I used to watch a blues guy named Ken Lyon. Who turned to one lady, during a performance; who I think was making noises, and said, "You'll have to be quiet, my Dear". which I thought had real class, maturity, and was DA KOOLEST way of shutting her up without being a jerk. So, from that day on, I put it in my arsenal.

The birds will Bless you for your act of kindness. And, in dark times, if you close your eyes and say a "cat prayer," God will hear it. For the creatures of the earth are in direct communication with the The Great Spirit....

Well, noon has come and the day has warmed up to the point I can't abide wearing the thin sweater I took to work, so I am in shirt sleeves and wondering if I will soon be able to do without my tee shirt. There is a light breeze blowing the cumulus hither and yon amidst the shit-storm of sunlight that is falling on everything. The glare is awesome--you really need shades if you are going out doors to shovel the walk. The way that light is coming down, though, it won't do you any good. It's awful, man. Soon as you get to the end, and turn around, zap, everything is all bright and warm again. I hate winter.

So there I was, practicing and working on the song I'm writing. The chords reminded me of another song, so I went in search of it. I can't do it. It's a lovely sensitive finger-picking (Am C C F / F C C G etc.) treatment of an anti-war ballad, but when I hit the second chorus, I can't get through it. Extra credit to the person who comes up with the word in the second chorus (F C G Am) that isn't in the first) I can't get past.

I topped up the feeder and got 'CHEEP'ed at by a very impatient woodpecker. He complained then tried to peck a tree, and I'm surprised his beak is stil in one piece... or two. They got the upper part and the lower, and ... oh, never mind.

I know, it's not morning here anymore. As if I care... ;-)

Okay, Bob, but there are nice-looking witches with warmer nipples than gnu's! Some of us are here, even!**bg**

It's been a good morning here. Cold for the Banana Belt of Colorado...about 30F, but weather dot com says it feels like 25F and it got down to 13F last night which is cold for here. Another month we should be seeing signs of Spring.

I had my usual breakfast made by Rog...smoothie with almond milk, blueberries, dried figs, and protein powder plus Ezekiel bread toast.

Worked on the final copy edit of Prairie Child my next book. I am getting excited about it almost being ready for printing/publication.

Spoke with my grandson, Morgan, who told me he loves me.:-)

Got an okay finger stick at the coumadin clinic.

Brought home a fav. takeaway lunch and enjoyed eating it while reading Mudcat.

Had an email from a taiko drum maker whom I've never met, telling me he will sell me a practice drum, originally made for his church, at a GREAT discount, for small payments for a few months, to help me further Morgan's music learning and for me to play, too. I gave my drum away a few years ago and it was right and meant to be at the time, but I have missed having a drum (not the one I gave away, though, it was supposed to go.) This was a great thing to get in my email!!

The coumadin clinic nurse oohed and ahed over my MMario-Mudcat-Hug shawl this morning. I love wearing it and the one Jacqui sent me, too, and telling people where they came from. They are astounded when I mention I've never actually met, face to face, most of the folks who were behind the hugs.:-) Thanks, Mudcatters!

My cat Little One woke me up about 6am, so I fed her (got a yogurt for myself) and went back to bed. We both woke up about 9am. The temp was -2F ( -18.9C), here in Michigan. By noon, it had climbed to a whopping 9F (-12.8C). No snow today, and the sun was shining beautifully.

I made oatmeal for breakfast, and a small pot of coffee. Went out and started the car (it started fine) and ran the snowblower (small amount of snow overnight).

Practiced a few songs. We've got a show tonight. Fortunately it's only about 2 miles away.

OK, so here's what happens in my part of California, what with the paradise-like scenery and warm weather:

Kiddo and I woke up after a stiff night on the front room couch -- because mysteriously our bedroom had a bat fluttering around in it last night, despite all the windows being closed. (Ah, the joys of country life!) The bat then disappeared, again without a window being opened -- even more worrisome. Is it in, or is it out?

Have informed hugsband that my son and I are not sleeping in said accommodation until I can rest assured there are and will continue to be no bats in residence. Rabies is admittedly not probable, but my son did claim to have been bitten the last time we had a bat in that bedroom. With bats able to enter and exit the room at will, we'd have no hope of being to trap the offending critter if it happened again, which means that if one of us did get bitten we'd have to do the regimen of painful injections.

So my morning was a bit grumpy, actually...at least until I got outside and saw the light of morning tinting the hilltops peach and lavender, and little enough frost that I knew I wouldn't have to defrost or scrape to drive the Mini. Then all was well.

Claire

Beautiful day here...frosty and clear with no black ice but actual sunshine. Yesterday I picked the first rhododendruns out of our rhododendrun grove at work. I got up early enough to go to McDonald's and have a sausage mcmuffin for once (usually I skip the bread) and read two papers. It was great. Then walked to work as usual along wooded areas where bears sometimes cross and by cranberry fields and little streams etc. Now everyone is gone from work so I got to Windex my desk since my boss hates the fumes, and next I will turn on RUsh Limbaugh..oops I really meant NPR. mg

You should be able to catch lots of ice, 3refs!

I had a quick start this AM. I keep the thermostat way down at night and at -22C, the heat from the basement didn't cut the biscuit. Cold toes make for fast action at zero dark hundred hours.

I enjoyed, after I was bundled up and turned the heat up, chatting with my Mudcat buddies, drinking hot tea and watching a glorious and brilliant sunrise over the frozen white landscape, watching and feeding the Blue Jays, Crows and Robin (yes, Crows and a ROBIN), writing a short story draft, going to a few grocery stores and chatting about the weather, helping a little old lady with her groceries, giving a lady with a dead car battery a boost, visiting Mum who wouldn't venture out of the house in -30C windchill, and... the best... standing in the doorway of my garage, out of the wind, in the sunshine, for near ten minutes, stripped to the waist. (I did have a hat on.)

Amos is a pussy. Art too.

Now, I must go moisturize my nipples.

Got the fire stoked up, brought in some more firewood, listened to the news, did an hour on the Larrivee working on improving my finger style, did another 30 minutes working out some blues stuff, also worked out an arrangement of "Save the Last Dance For Me" suitable for house/small venue concerts (I like to throw off genre stuff in to break things up), put on the Mills/Crabtree CD "Freedom", then the Robert Earl Keen CD "West Textures" and listened to it all before sitting down to work out his great song "Mariano". I am now headed over to Sandy's Lakeside Country Kitchen to take the piss with the old timer, right wing mafia. Much as they bitch, I think they love having a real live lefty in their midst. The other day I hit them with some hobo lefty economics that my friend Mark Ross shared with me. Goes like this:

A year ago if you invested $1,000.00 US in Delta Airlines, today you would have about $32.00
If you invested it in Wamu, you would have $27.00.
If you invested it in Lehman Bros. you would have nothing.
If, instead, you had just went out and bought all the beer you could get with it,
you could have enjoyed the time drinking it with you friends,
saved the cans and turned them in for the deposits of about $243.00.
Hobo economics.

Off to Sandy's I go.

All the best,

Mick

The PDF is 24MB so I cannot send it by email to repro. I have to run all over ERO begging for some one to run it over to them other side of Chelmsford Town Centre.

that done.. I have to compose cover letter and email for the Invitation to send to

All elected cabinet members by post and by email
All members of the MIEC (don't ask) I have no list and no clue who the members are.
All Jiangsu Festival contacts. Again i don't know from squat.

So my day has been taken up with trying to locate these lists of contacts.

Cabinet Members was easy... all on the website.

the rest? She shrugs with very Frecnh attitude... not my patch.

I am going home now. Headache in tow.

Far out! I can see the school where Shane got suspended. I can see the track where he refused to run and the schoolyard where he got caught smoking underage. I can see the river that he ran a stolen cop car into and the lake where he went through the ice on various stolen snowmobiles over the years. With a little work I expect to be able to soon identify the dilapidated old house and the trash-strewn lawn of the place that Shane calls "home".

My mistake... they DO have reasonable shots of Blind River (and you can get lots closer than that)

Frozen in here in NH, too. The wood stove is working hard, and manages to heat the main floor very nicely. I'm not straying from the house today!

Oh...there are VERY complete tutorials for Google Earth at their site....it is a totally amazing program, and takes some getting used to to figure out everything it can show.

The basic version is free...and it's all a casual user is likely to need. I just download it and work from there... it does require some bandwidth and speed to work well. It doesn't seem to have any bad habits, except taking up LOTS of computer memory if you try to save too many settings.

I don't think Blind River has been done in fine detail yet, though. San Diego is totally documented. They have gone down the major streets around my area, but not down my street. I can look down on it from maybe 2000 ft up, but not street level.

Bill, I see that Google Earth is a download program on the Net. Is it free? Is there any particular option I should avoid checking (activating) on their menu when I download it?

I think it might prove useful in keeping an eye on what's happening in Blind River.

I've never cared for Canadian winters in the least. They are the one thing I really don't like about this country. My next incarnation will hopefully either involve a more southerly home...or a much better insulated body.

Well, the California state legislature, unable to face theur fiscal woes, has resorted to passing laws. Today they passed a "California Weather" law. It states the official California definition of "freezing" is now 54 degrees Farenheit. (It's an indexed value -- the temperature at the front door of the New York Stock Exchange at midnight on the first of the month, divided by -1 and multiplied by a constant).

I drove to work this morning before sunrise, as is my wont, and noticed the temperature outside was freezing, California style. But it promises to warm up a little bit by noon.

Little Hawk, if he does, he'll have to pay a penalty of a free top-notch Mac computer system for everyone who wants one.

Your Canadian winter has spread to Maine and south as far as Florida.

A cat would NOT help. ;-) Trust me.

Seems like everyone has cold temperatures today, doesn't it? But Amos will probably drop in at some point to tell us all about how he got a slight sunburn today, paddling around on the balmy seas off southern California.

(hi, Susan) (nag, nag, nag)
I'm waking up slowly, 'cause my ummmm...'advanced age' doesn't let me sleep really well... maybe a cat would help..

We have pretty chilly weather this morning, and a VERY light dusting of snow. We keep an oil-filled radiator thing in the 'office', so that reading Mudcat is warm, even when the rest of the house is a bit chilly.

I'm on 2nd cup of coffee and front page of paper, with several 'projects' calling at me thru the office door...but they can't have me yet.

Got MP3s playing on the computer and todays meals are planned....so I am in control....until the 1st crisis..

Hi, Susan.

I'm figuring out what further modifications I can make to our bantam house to keep them warm in this brutal cold. My husband is locating and splitting out the remaining stumps and odd chunks of firewood to burn in the cellar woodstove to keep the pipes from freezing. We're about out of wood and an promised gift of firewood appears to have disappeared into the far blue horizon, so while I usually enjoy winter's change of pace I find I am a little concerned about how we'll keep the parlor/bedroom side of the house warm. Oh well, if there isn't enough wood to keep the whole house warm we'll have to camp out in the kitchen side and wait for the thaw to arrive.

Outside it's sunny and the sky is a hazy blue. I'm keeping watch for a flock of 50+ wild turkeys that has been meandering through our yard this week. The chickadees think it's lovely out!

Enjoy the day,

maeve

It's 30 below (Celsius) outside this morning...that would be about 20 below Fahrenheit for you Americans. And our furnace motor has died. That's the motor that blows the forced air...we have an electric forced air heating system here. The motor just makes a humming sound as it tries to start up and run the fan, but it never succeeds in actually starting.

So, it's a good thing I have some portable plug-in heaters here, just in case. There is one sitting under the desk as I type.

The furnace guy should be here with a new motor in an hour or two. This will be his third call here in tbe last 10 days, as we have tried to determine just what the problem was...it proved somewhat elusive...was first suspected to be a bad sequencer (replaced), then suspected to be an accumulation of dirt around the motor (cleaned up), now suspected to be a worn-out motor period (about to be replaced).

Dum-dee-dum. (humming a little tune) Canadian winters.

This morning I am

* glad that I don't have to go out in the freezing cold unless I want to

The snow looks beaufiful but I don't want to drive in it unless I have to. And though I should do it for exercise, walking up & down these hills is something I only do when I have to.

* enjoying myself doing Internet research for the Mudcat thread on Black church services that I recently started

* responding to messages from new friends on the Myspace page that I started last month

* wondering if Mudcat will stay "up" the entire day

It's cold enough to freeze two dry rags together.
Jacqui and I have been working up a program for tomorrow evening at the Side Door Cafe in Brunswick Maine.
I'm not accustomed to practicing but she won't have it otherwise.

This morning at Mudcat, I am enjoying...

<> record-cold temps, in my down booties that cover a comfy pair of fuzzy slippers,
<> a beautifully bright, sunny view of the most recent top-dressing of the snow on rural PA scenery,
<> a warm cat sitting agsint my back (he's on the top of the chair back), and
<> making plans for a trip next week into the unknown that will include two current MudBuds and a new one, plus some medical visits that will actually be fun.

Tell me about YOUR Mudcat Morning.

~Susan
