Pretty sure it was Northern Front that I remember seeing at Durham Folk Festival mid-70's and one of them asking another (who was at the Town Hall piano) for a note to tune to. A piano key was suitably removed and thrown across the stage to great amusement...

Missing from the above ( I think ) - "The day I took the vow ".
Chorus:-
The day I took the vow
The day I took the vow
I said farewell to liberty
The day I took the vow.
Quite a humourous song.

I'm with Betsy... as someone who remembers Northern Front from days long gone I've always held the impression that Ed's surname was "Pigford". I can't remember exactly where or when (either not quite that sad or succumbing to memory loss... I prefer the former!) but it was definitely stated by either Nick or Mike on at least one one occasion. Looking back, it may well have been said as a joke but it stuck! Doesn't detract from the fact that Ed has written some cracking songs. Would be good to see Northern Front again if they ever had a mind to regroup!

I am in e-mail correspondence with Ed, having interviewed him for a series mentioned in another thread and beginning here:

I rechecked by Google - it turned up this Mudcat thread
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=50029#757410 and if Malcolm Douglas was puzzled after doing his homework , that's good enough for me.I always believed it was with a "g" - I can go back to the Northern Front days, and I wish Ed,Mike and Nick all the best , should they be viewing these pages.
It's no big deal of course, it's just a visual thing , I (rightly or wrongly) associate "Pickford" as being a spelling mistake e.g. as one I would if saw Middlesbrough spelt Middlesborough.

When you see amongst those songs, those folk club "standards", you realise what damn good songwriter he is.
