Subject: RE: BS: Forfar Scotland From: Jack Campin Date: 27 Feb 09 - 08:43 PM Forfar is a short bus ride from Kirriemuir which has a very good traditional music festival. The only person I knew in Forfar was Davie Grant the moothie player, who died a few months ago. It's typical Scottish small town with an attractive centre. Best known for the Forfar Bridie. Jayto, why and what do you want to know? |

Subject: RE: BS: Forfar Scotland From: John MacKenzie Date: 27 Feb 09 - 06:53 PM There was the story of the station announcer, who in the last war when they had removed all the signs to confuse any visiting Germans, made the following announcement as a train pulled up in the station. "Here we ur fur whaur ye're gaun. a' youse in there fur oot here, get oot" |

Subject: RE: BS: Forfar Scotland From: Megan L Date: 27 Feb 09 - 01:50 PM Just be glad they didn't come from Alford in Aberdeenshire:) In the days of steam they had to change trains and the station master would walk up and down the platform making the announcement trouble was in the local dialect it came out as "All change fur afart" |

Subject: RE: BS: Forfar Scotland From: Rasener Date: 27 Feb 09 - 01:00 PM LOL Indeed. Whne I first moved up to Scotland I made freinds with a group of scots of which half were Glaswegian. I could just about get by with one to one conversation. However, when they all started, it was impossible to understand. I remember at one Rangers Celtic match, this small scottish guy, who I didn't know, offering me a drink from his whisky flask. I had already had enough, so I said "No Thank You". At that he thought I was insulting him and he wanted to have a punch up (its always the small ones :-) ). Anyway, I had a wee dram and he was happy again. Then the time at Celtic's ground, and one of the stands I was in, had half Celtic supporters and half Rangers fans. Anyway, things got pretty heated as one can imagine. the next thing, bottles were flying everywhere. Normal decent businessmen had turned into animals. I don't think I have ever been so frightened in all my life. When we left the ground, I saw my first example of two men supporting another one by holding his arms. they were so pissed, they took one step forward and two steps back. :-) Those were the days. That was in the mid seventies. |
