Pat (Catspaw),

Anybody puttin' lighthouses where there're channel buoys is way out of the channel anyhow and will most probably run violently aground pretty quick. Lighthouses on rivers are overkill for sure. The buoys on the rivers have reflective surfaces that bounce/reflect the long white spear of the towboat's searchlight in great fashion. Any respectable pilot (except maybe John Hartford) could navigate in fine fashion using that time-tested method. (Mr. John H. is too easily distracted by any passing female form.) Putting real, huge lighthouses on the rivers as navigation aids would be like allowing Sue the T-rex (now at the Field Museum Of Natural History--Chicago) to go marauding, alive, through Central Park. (But it might be fun to watch New York get stepped on.---Must be the anarchist in me.)

Yes, Pat, there ARE light's on the rivers--but very small ones. They're not buoys but "day markers" (as they're called)---fixed navigation aids on the shore. Those have flashing dim lights--solar powered by batteries that are charged up during daylight hours. Mr. Hartford (mentioned earlier) had one of those lights named for him by the Army Corps of Engineers on the Cumberland River (or is it the Tennessee?) where he can see it from his house. That has never, ever, been done to honor a person now living. They did that because of all he has done with his music to educate folks to the wonders of river life and how the rivers work---not to mention the romance and the draw of steamboats---now and in the past.

As some of you may have heard, recently they have started tearing down some of the huge dams built in the 1930s by the Army Corps of Engineers. Seems those monstrous erections ;-) are now politically incorrect. (VIAGRA AGAIN!?) The salmon can't seem to get up river to spawn as well as they used to before the damn dams were built. We all know one must get up to spawn. Well, live an' learn. The more things change, the more they get different. I even hear there are plans to use T-rex DNA to clone a huge mixed DNA creature from Sue and Dolly, the cloned sheep! The resultant mutant creature would be used to TEAR DOWN, not only the old dams, but the lighthouses erroniously built along rivers spoiling everyone's view of aproaching tornadoes and, thusly, proving to be quite detrimental to all sorts of endangered species. (The most endangered species in those cases being humans.---And everyone knows that the best way to get REAL action along those lines is to show that one or two PEOPLE are actually in hot water.) Once you've got the needed HOT WATER it's real easy to make a tempest in a teapot!! Nobody knows yet if tornados in a teapot can be manufactured artificially. But eveyone does know that, if it can be conceived by the minds of humans, that's almost a direct order to go ahead and do it---as in the cases of the atomic bomb, cloning, Liberace, the recent bombing war, Industrial Rock and Tiny Tim---if ya know what I mean. To paraphrase a saying from the '60s, "If it feels good, do it"---no matter what might be the outcome. In the case of Viagra, we all know what the outcome will be!

Yes, Catspaw49, I can see your points---but only when you are wearing a wet T-shirt.

Love,

Art

As one who takes his handle from The Shambles Lightship, I do feel very strongly that it has now been reduced to an unmanned audible warning device.

From a small island with three, count them, three lighthouses.

Art what were you smokin' when the T-Rex mated with the lighthouse?

But you're right...those damned lighthouses. Just because they're tall they really lord it over you and you get a bunch of them together and the going gets rocky. Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are lighthouses but there's good ones and bad ones...some are just typical shackers and they act like we ought to keep them in bulbs forever because their grandpa's had to use a flame. I never owned a lighthouse of even lit a flame so it ain't my fault. Now there movin' onto some of the nicer coastlines and wanting to be right in there with the Coast Guard stations and hotels. It's OK for them to be on the nicer beaches, I just don't think they need to be mixed in like that. And I know a lot of people who don't mind it, but I don't want those friggin' lighthouses mixing in with the channel buoys....that's not right no matter what anyone says and I'll tell them so right to their beacon! Now I'm NOT one to hold back coastal change, but things aren't going to change overnight and so many of the lighthouses are so pushy about it. Just give it time...another hundred years or so and things can improve, but some of them are lobbying to be lightships right now and our coasts just aren't ready for that yet. And I'm sorry if they get offended by being called lighthouses, but I can't keep up with every damn name change and I KNOW I'm NOT calling them Coastal Warning Devices. But I don't call any of them shackers, even if they are. I haven't used that word in 10 years and anyone who says I have is a liar...Yessir that's right! So as you can see, I'm not a racist, but I don't want my buoys hangin' out with one of them.

Daniel,

We don't have the advantage. If you read the threads that Jeri kindly suggested somewhere in these "hair shirt" threads, you will learn about many of us.

I have been here about 17 months. I'm a regular whether anyone mentions me in a thread or not. The many questions you have just answered have been answered by others on the threads Jeri mentioned.

It seems you would like to get to know us and those threads are a good place to start.

We have been through a lot together, so we have some history. Some folks have even gotten quite nasty at times with each other. To get a hint of how powerful feelings get, read the My Little Armalite thread.

We are often moved to laughter, but we have also been moved to tears. You know, you will only be outside of the circle here by stepping outside. I like some folks better than others, but they all feel like family (I like some of my family members better than others, too). That means I value and respect them even when they "step out of bounds" to my way of thinking. If they get too far out, I will post or write a personal message. I do this because I value what it here and I want it to continue.

I ain't runnin' this show, but I have a part and I'm responsible for what that part contributes to the whole. If no parts are contributed then we will have a "hole", not a whole.

So keep pitchin' in, you will find your place. Just hope it isn't inbetween Catspaw and LEJ.

Big RiB

Daniel hails from Illinois, and works at the Keysone s&w Co. Been a folksinger since I was about 14 years old. Sang mostly in Illinois. I'm 49 years old. I also play classic guitar...a parental trade off(kept hiding the violin). I write a little bit, but I haven't performed in quite a while. Married, 2 kids, boy and girl, a cat named Midnight, and a goldfish named Frank. Now...you all have the advantage.

S'paw,

What's wrong with lighthouses???

You sound positively racist where those sometimes clayfooted edifices are concerned! I had a T-rex friend of mine that once thought a lighthouse was something to mate with & demolished the L-house (as well as himself) in a fit of turned on (by the fog horn) bliss ala praying mantisi (plural).
Personally, lighthouses like Pete & Cisco & Woody & many others----even some of the folks here at Mudcat---have been BEACONS (not New York) in the night for me. Hopefully, my overzealous attentions over the years were not of the kind that was too demolishing to them and theirs. As I've said before, mutually positive emotional relationships--even from afar---sure do beat solitary sex (most of the time)...

Rick.

I don't know what gives you the idea that I have a problem with some peoples sense of humour. I have voiced support to folks who did have a problem with that and other things in the past it is true.

My concern is mainly that everyone feels at home here stays and contributes. We are all different here and that is the strength of the place. It's is not necessary for all of us to try to have the same sense of humour, or interests and I would not like to give the impression to new folk that they have to try to be anything other than themselves, to be accepted here.

Jeri's suggestion about the FAQs sounds like it may help. Some explanation of the Mudcat mythology (tiples, possums and hairy shirts and such) would help to address the appearance, for new folk of walking into private jokes.

There is not much, if anything wrong here. It certainly is not a clique as the acid test of that, is that I am still here along with many other 'lurkers, shirkers and midnight burpers' (you know who you are).

Come on in the water's fine and your Mudcat needs you.

Rick, re: Shambles comment about avoiding intimidating new folks, and your question about how to do that, I think it would be helpful to have a Forum "MudFAQ" with a link right up there at the top of the page. A new person could get a whole lot of "need to know" info with one click. I actually started working on something, but I got hung up in the HTML stuff and haven't gotten very far since.

Sham give us a few suggestions how to do that. Everytime I've seen a new person identify themselves and say hello, they get one helluva welcome. I'm told that this rarely would ever happen in other net groups. I sometimes worry that it's the sense of humour that some mudcatters have that really troubles you.

This place can never really become a clique, simply because anyone can join. To some it can however take on the appearence of one. It is something for us to bear in mind and try and avoid. Not easy though.

His first post back, his first line, was "Well...So I guess this isn't a private club?" My guess is he came in here and saw everybody being all chummy and personal and thought he wandered into a private, invitation-only party. He didn't even suspect we treat everybody like that, if given the opportunity.

Joe, I'm not after your job, and you know a whole lot more than I do. Like Sandy said, I have way too much time on my hands, and I'm just trying to be useful. But, You da Man!!! (I, however, have lots of hair.)

Jeri, ya' know I can't help but notice that you are really getting into the Joe Offer thing and doing one helluva' job at it!!! The other day you aced Square Root Joe on a song request and now I seem to notice a high percentage of the infamous blue, clicky things in your postings. As you keep up the good work I must offer, so to speak, several words of warning.

Wait a minute......If I give you my words of warning, Joe may become confused and think I'm serious, which would actually be my first word of warning.......Hold on......this is getting like some type of Catch-22 thing. The hell with it............just stay away from lighthouses and don't begin to go bald........and never tune your guitar to an accordion unless you're playing "Lady of Spain" or the other song accordion players know which IS NOT "Lady of Spain." And don't transport crazed tiple bands cross country as Joe did, and.............LOOK...just keep up the good work and continue on as you are. I luv ya'!!

Hi Dan - glad you came back!!!

If you are wondering what the living hell Catspaw is talking about in reference to Cletus in that other thread, check out Paw, Cletus, Buford, & the Reg boys. You may still not understand anything he says, but you'll have an equal chance as the rest of us!

Bbc and her son David have created a wonderful website with e-mail addresses, birthdays, pictures of some of the 'Catters and profiles.

If you want to, you can tell us when your birthday is if you add a message to Birthday Thread--If you want it known!

If you want to tell us what instruments you play, you can add to What instruments do catters play?

For an internet discussion group, this is a very close-knit community, but one which passionately encourages new people to join - but I think you know that now!

Daniel, I can understand how you feel, because I'm pretty new to the 'Cat myself. But I REALLY think you should maybe reconsider. These truly are some nice folks. If sometime or another you've maybe put in on a thread and felt that you weren't well received--sometimes I've felt that way, but I think it's mostly been in my own mind. If some of these folks seem more familiar with others and it seems as though they're carrying on private conversations...well, these men and women have been tuning into the site for quite a while now. Give it another chance. I don't think you'll be sorry.
