Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: ChanteyLass Date: 22 Aug 11 - 10:26 PM Not long after our son was born, we had a bat in our house. I took our infant into our bedroom and closed the door while my now ex trapped the bat in a large brandy snifter that had been filled with fruit and received as a gift. He slipped something flat under the inverted snifter and brought it into the bedroom to show me how beautiful it was and how fine its wings were. I told him to just get it out of the house! (Obviously the marriage was doomed!) We were already divorced when a duck came in through the wood stove, but that's another story. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Aug 11 - 03:04 PM "how do ya fry them"? In batter of course! Now you've made me look up THE BAT-POET by Randall Jarrell, p. 37. Here's the end of a longer poem: Their single shadow, printed on the moon Or fluttering across the stars, Whirls on all night; at daybreak The tired mother flaps home to her rafter. The others are all there. They hang themselves up by their toes, They wrap themselves in their brown wings. Bunched upside down, they sleep in the air. Their sharp ears, their sharp teeth, their quick sharp faces All dull and slow and mild. All the bright day, as the mother sleeps, She folds her wings about her sleeping child. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: katlaughing Date: 21 Aug 11 - 10:59 AM Or, go outside and wave a radar gun around? Like attracts like? Bat Goddess used to post about them perching above her bed and, I think, hanging from the bedposts. Useful critters for keeping the bug population under control, esp. skeeters. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: olddude Date: 20 Aug 11 - 01:30 PM Naw Don not all critter as that easy I been bit by spiders, scorpions, snakes, almost eaten by a bear .. but it goes with the territory when you are in the woods as much as me. Once I was trekking through the jungle and a snake fell from the tree and landed on my neck. Little green guy called a bamboo pit viper. He was nice enough to not bite me as I would have taken ten steps before I died. all in all I do agree that most animals are far nicer then most people |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: Donuel Date: 20 Aug 11 - 01:07 PM Perhaps my greatest talent is the empathy I have with animals. (people are a challenge in comparison) I just pick up the bat carefully by day while they are in a sleep torpor and put them in a safe place outdoors. The shared bond we have with animals is insticntive but requires a degree of empathetic common sense. People who have a short list of animals they trust are the ones who will mistreat animals out of ignorance, not meaness. PS ignorance is not an excuse but something you can overcome. I have found myself in the midst of animals who would certainly have caused harm to other people who have a mind set different from my own. The only animals who have harmed me in my entire life has been people. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: Bettynh Date: 20 Aug 11 - 10:53 AM From Bill Harley's site: I Am the Batman ©Bill Harley, All rights reserved Reprints with permission only And the stars are thrown across the sky When the night is deep and the whole world sleeps That's when the little bats fly When the little bats fly As you lie down to take your rest They circle 'round your head There' the flutter of wings as they squeak and sing And fill your heart with dread They fill your heart with dread But I am the batman I guard you while you sleep While the bats fly round with their squeaking sound I will earn my keep I will earn my keep The batman lives by a different code That few would dare to claim Standing proud and tall, he stoops and crawls And so he earns his name… He opens windows, and opens doors He roams from room to room Some might quake At the risk he takes With only a racket and broom Only a racket and broom I am the batman Ooooh.. When the bats have left your home When his work is done There's nary a kiss For the sleep he's missed He's gone with the morning sun Gone with the morning sun Stir 'em up, back 'em down Pick 'em up, throw 'em out Do it now, right now, Batman Chase 'em here, chase 'em there Little batties everywhere Do it now, get them out, Batman From his Mistakes Were Made album, which also includes a 15 minute story about bat entry in his bedroom |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: Bobert Date: 20 Aug 11 - 10:10 AM You need a new hobby, Ol-ster... Leave the sumabich' bats the heck alone... I mean, most guys chase women when they have the mid-life thingie going on but you??? No, you have to invite Wild Kingdom into your house??? Me thinks you need some couch time with the Doc... Maybe he can get you thru this little unpleasant episode... (((BTW, the bat, unlike you, works the night shift... They sleep during the day... If ya' had just gone back to bed (with the door closed) you would have found him or her the next morning hanging from a lampshade or somethin' and you could caught him or her quite easily and put him out...))) Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: Will Fly Date: 20 Aug 11 - 05:06 AM Hey Dan - he wasn't looking for no front door - he was aiming to get two little puncture marks into your neck. Next thing, he might have turned into a wolf, or a vampire - or even a banjo player. But then, you know, fangs ain't what they used to be... |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: olddude Date: 20 Aug 11 - 04:34 AM good thing the missus is gone for a bit. She freaks with bats. Me nothing bothers me. I get a kick out of the things myself. Man they are fast. They can corner on a dime .. but they suck at finding an open door. I just had a new roof put on my house and I am sure he came in because of the guys tearing off my old roof (expensive too dang it) always something. Now I am up ... Oh boy .. wonder whats on TV .. probably infomercials about buns of steel. |

Subject: BS: Bat chasing 101 From: olddude Date: 20 Aug 11 - 04:14 AM Radar my arse, I chased a little brown bat around my living room for the last hour. It is 4 in the morning here. Front door wide open to get him out and the stupid thing couldn't find it. Finally after a lot of towel waving he found the wide open front door. Now how exactly does he find a bug flying around if he can't find his way out of a wide open door. Never tried fried bat but I was getting mad enough LOL Now I am up .. can't go back to sleep ... Dang thing |
