Let me try some sources on the net, otherwise I'll make a MIDI file. In Venezuela the Christmas songs are called GAITAS and come from the state of Zulia, in the venezuelan West, they would make a wonderful surprise, but Alas! I don't have any CD. From: Escamillo Date: 29 Nov 99 - 09:59 PM León Gieco is one of the main pop artists in Argentina, and surely for this reason he got problems with the military, some years ago (fortunately, we are now celebrating the 4th consecutive civilian transfer of government, for once in a century or so). Anything that doesn't move, just PAINT it. Anything that thinks, put it in jail or make it disappear. Those were the orders in those times. I think you're right, Victor Jara may well be the Ghost mentioned by Gieco in his song. The most famous (if not musically the best) of his songs is EN EL PAIS DE LA LIBERTAD, which verses say: BUSQUENME, ME ENCONTRARAN.. EN EL PAIS DE LA LIBERTAD! (look for me, you'll find me ... in FREEDOM LAND ) Gieco's melodies and rythms are highly influenced by USA folk and south latin America, I find some of them a delicious combination which stand for themselves in history of a whole-american folk if this should exist. It is a pity we only had a few minutes to exchange contraband, but we have vowed to descend into the depths next time around. When I saw him last he was working his way into the top choir in the country -- which, given the sophistication of Argentineans, is something. Also, alas, I didn't get to hear him sing. That too, awaits. Andres, now that I have these great albums (by Leon Gieco), you have to give me some information -- for instance, is the Canterville Ghost Victor Jara? Which of the songs is the most famous (or, to put it another way) which did the Argentinean military hate the most? I have been blessed in that way a number of times within this past few months. There is nothing can describe the exhilaration! I hope many, many more of us get to have this wonderful experience soon. And, from what I hear from Max, it may just become a more common experience. Max has said he is trying to plan what he refers to as a "couch tour" of Mudcatters. Truth is, I had a similar idea at about the same moment. I am not sure when Max's adventure will take place, but mine will likely be in late May or early June. I doubt I will get as far south as Peter did, but I hope to get around quite a bit. I'll let you all know more when the event becomes more eminent. |

A brief borrowed five minutes at a local Uruguayan computer! There were purple jacarandas in bloom along the avenida in Buenos Aires, and the sweeping jangle of tango guitars could almost be heard in the Borgesian night. In the Hotel Intercontinental, beside two Japanese businessmen and their sweating local partner carving up the Paraguayan market in cameras ("the border is the place, the cheapest cameras in the world, it is, how they say in English, rotten"), Andres and I exchange bootleg CDs, destined to overthrow several countries. We smile, and talk about other things, but Rick Fielding´s album is injected into the vida loca....Alas, as Andres reported, we have had onl y a few minutes together, but we agreed that Mudcat is a unique community of loca vidas. I can assure to anybody who have not met Peter T. personally, that he not only seems to be (by his postings) an intelligent and sensible man, transmitting lots of good will to people, he really IS that and is also a true gentleman. (Appart from being also an important professional and Univ.teacher, as you may know). So I've been so lucky, I only expect to receive him in Buenos Aires sometime the next year with a little more of his time, to bring him to some real folk and alcohol places ! (It was only one hour this time - he had a very busy schedule) But I'm so happy with this meeting ! More on Saturday nigth, after Peter arrives back home. He carries some CDs from the local folk (modern, universalized) singer Leon Gieco who may be in the taste of many Mudcatters. A will to visit lower Canada is growing on me, as I hear.... Not being fluent in spanish, I am limited to enjoyment for the instrumental value. Folks down there play many different kinds of stringed instruments, which give the music a much fuller sound than we're accustomed to further north. Maybe someone with a better grasp of theory can explain the phenom more clearly. I think it would be grand it more SA folk were available to 'Catters. |
