Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: punkfolkrocker Date: 13 May 19 - 12:48 PM The recent British super hero movie "SuperBob" is worth a watch if you can find it streaming online, or the DVD in a pound shop... Trailer |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Donuel Date: 13 May 19 - 06:58 AM Logan - an adult caring for a parent with dementia. Believable. Deadpool - totally unbelievable but with plenty of comic relief. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: punkfolkrocker Date: 12 May 19 - 02:15 PM For all the bad reviews, and fanboy anger.. my mrs thought Suicide Squad was brilliant... I tend to enjoy the first hour or so of DC movies, then they just decend into the usual overblown boring relentless hyper active confusing super powered free for all fighting bollocks.. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 19 - 01:53 PM Oh,yes. The DC TV universe is far better than their cinematic universe. Arrow, Flash and Suprgirl are all worth a watch. There was a crossover involving all 3 along with Legends of Tomorrow that caught my eye some time back. Must catch up on those. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 19 - 01:47 PM PFR. Logan was indeed brilliant. Talking of DC comics, my favourite from the 60s was always Green Lantern. Which is why I was so disappointed with the recent film of the same name. But that in turn turned to delight when Ryan Reynolds became Deadpool and mercilessly took the piss out of the role he played in GL :-) The DC cinematic universe has been particularly full so far. Apart from a couple of the Batman "Dark Knight" films and the most recent Wonder Woman, they have been very lacklustre. Their attempt to match Marvel with the Justice League was spectacularly dreary. Shame really. DMcG - Yes, don't watch Ragnarock. I enjoyed it but it is very silly. Makes the whole end of the world thing a bit of a joke. I must say though that the New Asgard in Endgame seems a good concept. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: punkfolkrocker Date: 12 May 19 - 01:38 PM I'll quickly mention Marvel TV series [how do you spell the plural...???]... AS far as I can tell, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows Marvel Movies Universe Canon, but has come unstuck in the chronology of the latest season, so might depart entirely into it's own alt universe...??? All the Netflix serieses [plural...???] have recently been axed.. Out of all that lot I only watched the first 5 episodes of Daredevil, which was exactly what I like in a superhero show... Adult dark gritty brutal drama... How Batman should be treated.. not kid's stuff... Unfortunately most every superhero TV show starts off well grounded in reality for the origins episodes, then sooner or later panders to all the usual super hero cross-over team-up battle bollocks... Yes.. that's my Great Aunt's second cousin's neice.. Funnily enough it turns out she is also a super hero... You might remember her, she was also a super villain with a different name and black costume for a fortnight after the tragic gamma shiteray experiment turned her temoprarily evil. She's back to normal now, or is she, with restyled hair and a new robot sidekick poodle that can fly and talk... |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: punkfolkrocker Date: 12 May 19 - 11:45 AM I'm still groggy from sunday afternoon nap.. How could I forget DeadPool.. Two of the most gleefully stupid and potty mouthed films to cheer us all up as we near the end of the world... I'll even watch the re-edited child friendly version of the sequal when it's cheap enough... Right, so now I'l probably not come back here so I can avoid reading spoilers.. Btw.. I only watched the first lord of the rings extended version film, and none of the sequals, or any of the hobbit trilogy.. or Twilight... the box sets await - probably for when the wife retires if we survive that long... |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: punkfolkrocker Date: 12 May 19 - 11:29 AM I'm trying to avoid spoilers here... I object to it for the same reasons I preferred DC comics back in the mid 1960s.. My pocket money could only afford a very limited number of American import comics every month, and DC provided self-contained stories in each issue. Marvel however exploited kids by reqiring several purchases of different comics to follow a story as it branched out into different titles... Even if my parents could have raised my pocket money sufficiently to read an intertwined Marvel universe story, the local news agent only sold an irregular supply of random titles. Pot luck whatever they had on the shelf each month.. This did change for the better when UK publishers created "Fantastic", "Terrific", and "Pow" comics... Licensed black and white anthologies of Marvel stories from earlier in the 1960s. [great free gifts to get us buying them...] Then I could read those comics every week becoming fully immersed in the Marvel Universe. But only in drab monochrome... So far I've only watched selected origins movies in 3D on our big telly.. They are excellent stand alone entertainment. Sequels are off putting because they become too wrapped up in the Marvel Universe; I still haven't got round to watching any Avengers films yet... The big problem I have is the same with Star Wars, Star Trek, and Dr Who... Far too much accumulated canon to remember characters and events from previous movies/tv shows over several decades... You need the fresh new brain and high powered instant recall memory of a 10 year old to carry all that lot around in your head... My favourites are Dr Strange, Guardians of the Universe 1 and 2, Ant Man.. They are amongst the best films so far this century.. I'll take a chance on the Ant Man sequel, and hope It's not too involved in Avengers story lines...??? Black Panther looked terrific in 3D [even if it is only 2D - 3D conversion rather than real 3D], but I found the movie itself slightlyover rated... I'm wary of watching the new Spider man film as that appears to be dependent on prior knowledge of the Avengers films... X Men aren't Marvel Universe yet, I think Disney have only just aquired the rights...??? Logan is the best super hero movie ever... [imho..] and I watched that without seeing any of the last decades worth of x men sequals... btw.. I have boxsets of Marvel Universe and X men blu-rays I still haven't found time to watch yet.. bloody Black Friday sales... |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: DMcG Date: 12 May 19 - 11:16 AM The suspension of disbelief is an interesting one, Donuel. I have no problem as long as they keep the real and the fantasy consistent in themselves - usually by being completely real or completely fantasy: Potter being one of the best examples of both side by side. So I have no problem with a flying, flame breathing dragon like Smaug. But in a recent film I saw, the people built a mechanical dragon. Because they started in the real world, I couldn't help thinking about how those wings provided enough lift, where the fuel came from for the fiery breath and so on. Keep it fantasy and all will be fairly well … But please don't decide to call a film Thor: Ragnarok and expect people who have loved the story of Ragnorok and Fenris and Jörmungandr and the rest since childhood to be happy unless you get it all spot on. Including how they all die. Even at 7 I appreciated that a mythology in which all the (main) gods die is something out of the ordinary. One of the franchise I haven't watched for that very reason. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Donuel Date: 12 May 19 - 07:38 AM I'm guessing 'graphic novelists' had 50 years to work out interconnecting plots and create new characters. Bill Mahre says Marvel villains and heros are always fighting over a dangerous Blue Shiney Thing (Cherenkov radiation?) or the invisible. people who can not suspend their belief will miss out on lots of fun and are probably old poops. As for me. I'll wait for HBO and make pop corn with sesame oil and probably fall asleep |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 19 - 06:04 AM If you are dissinterested, Mr Red, why post? Have to disagree (obviously :-) ) Cousin McG. The way some threads worked their way through many films was great. And the scope was far wider than either LoTR or X-Men. I must say that the opportunity to introduce the X-Men, particularly Deadpool, into the MCU is intriguing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: DMcG Date: 12 May 19 - 04:36 AM Count me as a dissenter, I am afraid. It was enjoyable entertainment, but no more. I see no great unifying theme as there is in LOTR, and simply putting all the characters in Endgame does not really count as more than an opportunity taken to me. If you compare say Xavier and Magneto from the other franchise, there is great moral ambiguity based on the extent to which you can trust other people. While there was a hint of that in Thanos, it was very fleeting and basically he was just a straightforward villain. Then there was the whole business with the stones - it was clear what you had to do to get the soul stone, but apart from completing the set, what did it actually do? Or the reality stone: used once (as far as I recall), but then never actually used when it would have altered the battles entirely. In the scene in the halls of Asgard, I immediately was struck by how they has used Durham Cathedral as the base for the CGI. Nothing wrong in that as such, but it is strong evidence that I was not involved in the plot or engrossed in the characterisations. By contrast, the Harry Potter films used Anwick castle, and while I know that as well as I know Durham Cathedral, it did not distract from the plot/action. |

Subject: RE: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Mr Red Date: 12 May 19 - 04:18 AM not a dissenter, but disinterested. |

Subject: BS: Marvel Cinematic Universe From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 19 - 04:09 AM I watched 'Endgame' yesterday. 22 films in three phases between Iron Man and Avengers Endgame. All interlinked. All meshing towards the finale. A work of genius whether you are in to Superhero fantasy or not. Probably betters or at least equals any other epic created. But I am sure the Mudcat will find dissenters :-) |
