Audacity is a great sound editing program (free of charge, too) and will work on a Mac, but you have to download an add-on to make MP3 files. I think I need to figure out how to do the conversions myself. I will check to see if Garage Band can do the converting. Meanwhile, DWR, I'll check out your dbpoweramp suggestion(s). |

There is a link for the FREE version 10 on this page, but a google search will find any number of others. Subject: Converting large audio files to mp3 or mp4 From: Genie Date: 29 Aug 09 - 10:01 PM I have a number of audio files, generated from my iMovie videos, but iMovie does not give the option of saving them as mp3s. These files, whether AIFF, .au, or .wav, are actually LARGER than their parent videos! I might get 7 to 10 songs on a CD, but I'd like to have them in mp3 format so I could get more like twice that many songs on the CD. I see that this thread is 9 years old, so I'm not sure the same software is available and applicable. Anyone have any new suggestions for shareware (or cheap) programs that will convert the large audio files (e.g. AIFF) to mp3 or mp4? Gneie |

They have to be 22k or 44k, but can be in mono to save space. Don't get hung up on a particular WAV file, go back and resample the source if at all possible. Conversions from a low-quality sample just won't be pleasant. As an advocate of minimalism, I've found Bladeenc, a very small (117k zip file download ) freeware program available from http://bladeenc.cjb.net, the developer's home page mp3.com, and many other locations, to be just the ticket. It looks like a DOS program (but it's actually a 32-bit Windows application, and available for many other operating systems, but tragically not Macs )--you run it with a command line just like the old days, but its simple to learn, works well and does not get you a bunch of corporate propaganda crap. And very easy to transport--if you're using someone else's computer and they don't have an encoder, you can download it and encode the wav file(s) and use it in a couple of minutes. Waveflow, mentioned above, is a wav file editor that works well but it is slow. Acoustica is an attractive-looking alternative which runs much faster, BUT it messes with all the WAV files on your machine, such that other programs seem to have trouble running or encoding them afterwards, so I've junked it. I'd try it again if they eliminated this rude feature (the developer claims that they only change certain file info data which is permitted under WAV protocol, but it seems to have side effects). Gotta admit it, frequent or extensive editing of 100-meg WAV files is an argument for the fastest, most-memory computer you can get your hands on. I manage with a Pentium 200k/32 meg setup. At the risk of being accused of Thread drift, and you don't mind navigating around a page of German, a static link, perhaps this time. Cubase VST 24 Demo The page that that links to gives you a choice between Mac or PC on the left side of the page. Make your choice, and it brings you to a list of download sites. You'll figure it out. Word of advice. If you install it, make a copy of the .exe file on floppys using either Winzip or This nippy little utility, because un installing and re installing from the ORIGINAL .exe file is not easily possible. (Turning your clock back doesn't work). This saves you the trouble of re-downloading (I hope you like reading books!!). I'm not too sure of it's size (14 - 15MB maybe), but do it and you will never again be troubled with worldly matters. Trouble is, it don't save. This particular little chappy, Cakewalk Home Studio temporarily stores it's 'wave data' in an almost .wav file (something like .WA~) While you still have Cakewalk open, open the track you're working on in Sound Recorder, and save it as a stereo .wav file. Use the wee utilities mentioned above, modify your EQ etc, and comvert to MP3, or burn it straight to your CD. Bob's your uncle! The process is still the seme with the Cubase one, but your minimum reqs. are 133MHZ / 32 RAM, You really want 166 with 64. You know what they say:

Does loads of little nice things to sound waves, including....wait for it...a reather good (should I say so myself), Graphic Equalizer. Yeaaaah!!! Every home should have one.
This one, on the other hand, will do an absolutely marvellous job converting all your huge .Wav files into nice tidy little MP3's, and vikky verka. VBR, CBR, you name it, they've got it. Records up to 160kbps with oversampling. This one's free, but you can, of course register(shhhh, there's that dirty word again) and get plagued with loads stupid E-mail from people who want to sell you their product. Enjoy

I've written one (1) original song so far (I've a good half dozen fragments bouncing around in me head), and it's about the river valley where she and my Dad grew up. I've sung it for him, and Grandma, and my other aunt (my uncle probably wouldn't care), but this aunt hasn't heard it. So at the very least, I'm going to tape that, and probably a bunch of gospel songs, since religious music is really Aunt Beryl's preference--she just indulges her folkie nephew 'cause she's got a soft spot for me. :-) When is problematic, what with taxes and my wife starting a new job, but it better be soon, since the prognosis isn't all that great at this point.... Unfortunately, the file was recorded in 1994 on a Win 3.1 "Multimedia PC," and the then-respectable sampling rate of 11.025 kHz. CannaMP3 and CDex wouldn't even talk to me about it until I bumped it up to 32,000 kHz by saving it at a different sampling rate from the Sound Recorder. This gave it a tinny, metal-robotty sort of distortion that I found quite unpleasant. Media Wizard converted it without a hiccup, but the resultant track was about 1/7 as long as the original, and I sounded like a Chipmunk on amphetamines--couldn't make out a single word it was so fast. So thanks to y'all, but for now, screw't. I've sent the WAV to Max, and if he can use it, he can use it. If not, I'll get around to recording something else before too long--I have promised my Auntie, who has lymphatic cancer, a tape! At least I've gained a collection of better tools for the future, thanks to Ed and Michael. Chris |
