Subject: RE: Hearme From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Aug 00 - 04:52 PM Hearme make a variety of products but even though many of them use the same DLLs (npevp.dll and npjac.dll), to the best of my knowledge you need to have the plugin installed or registered with your browser and I am not sure how that system works but I guess it involves entries hidden in the registry. As an example, I wanted to remove the IE hearme plug in and did so successfuly but IE still worked even though the plugin no longer existed - it was using the DLLs from a later Hearme installation on my PC (that was why I unninstalled the Netscape one using Smart Update). It looks to me to be another of Windows little secrets and one I have yet to work out. Unless you know how to manually register the plugin with your chosen browser (which is something I am trying to figure out), I can only suggest the options I mentioned before. Jon |

I've just visited the HearMe website, and I had the same difficulties, but they had an alternative way of installing what I asked for. The one I chose was HearMe version 2 - a basic bit of chat software. I figure that if I know what I'm looking for, I can download it myself and then come back to the mudcat afterwards. (Suffice to say that HearMe version 2 doesn't seem to be adequate) If this isn't a good Idea then tough, but I would prefer not to have to wait for netscape to get back to me, assuming that they have a clue what I'm talking about. I lost Hearme on Netscape a few weeks ago after I used Smart Update to uninstall it and I have yet to find out why it will not install it again. Netscape seems to think that the Plugin is still. I have even tried changing version numbers (a little naughty) in the Hearme Java script to try to force Smart Update to realise that an update is availabe to get it to download the plugin but Smart Update does not appear to be that smart. Much as I hate to admit it, IE does behave correctly with my modified code and goes away and searches for the update although if I point it to an older plugin, it does not check the DLL versions and on the strength of my modification, it will update a new plugin for an old one! A number of people have had problems installing Hearme on Netscape and have been forced to use Internet Explorer instead. This is not an ideal solution but Hearme themselves do not appear to have any answers to the Netscape problems. Jon |

I know of people who have managed to listen using one but I wasn't aware that anyone succeded in sending sound out with one. If my memory is correct, Capt Bob did try once but the sound kept breaking up. Lox, this is what Hearme have to say in thier FAQ:
Windows 95/98/2000/NT I am not sure what you will get away with using a PC of lower spec but assuming you meet the other requiremets, the best plan is to go over to hearme and see what happens. This will involve a small download for the required plugin. Jon

It gave me the option of downloading it, which I tried to do, but a box appeared telling me that my "smart update initialization" had failed. what does this mean in English, and how do I deal with it. |
