Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Dave Bryant Date: 09 Oct 02 - 11:40 AM This site also gives his death as during 2001. It's probably the best site for finding details of anyone who's been in a film or television show. According to it he was born in Bletchley, Bucks in 1915 so he must have been 86 when he died. I can remember him from various songs on "Children's Favourites" - along with Shirley Abicair, Burl Ives etc. |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST,Simon Date: 08 Oct 02 - 05:57 PM Found this thread via Google. I also found this: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/children/other/eltonhayes.htm So he died in September 2001. I was brought up on an EP. It also included the Quangle Wangles Hat. And my 3 year old loves it too - even if I sing it. |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 May 01 - 12:39 PM Here's the answer to my question in the last post He looks a lot more interesting than Elton John. But I bet he didn't sing the Owl and the Pussycat as well as Elton Hayes. |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 May 01 - 05:46 AM Elton Dean? Who he? Or where he? |
|
Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: BanjoRay Date: 06 May 01 - 08:32 PM Elton John did not take his name from Elton Hayes, he took it from Elton Dean. I used to think Elton Hayes was really good, he had a lovely touch with a nylon strung guitar. Cheers |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 06 May 01 - 05:57 PM It just occurred to me that the onlty other Elton I've ever come across is Elton John, and that's a stage name. Does this indicate that the lad was brought up on the Owl and the Pussycat? (I much preferred Elton Hayes.) |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Haruo Date: 05 May 01 - 12:25 AM I just started a superfluous thread on Elton Hayes. Please ignore it and post responses here. (I hadn't seen this one, and the most recent mention of him that a Search turned up was from last November.) Sorry about the duplication of effort. Liland |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Les from Hull Date: 04 May 01 - 06:13 AM Oooohhh Children's favourites - Uncle Mac ooohhh I've come over all queer! We did a singaround in the Tap 'n' Spile at Whitby once to see how many of the regular songs featured on that programme we could remember. All too many, I'm afraid - well over 50. Les |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST,Bobby Bob, Ellan Vannin Date: 03 May 01 - 03:18 PM Elton Hayes used to be the regular troubadour on a BBC television programme called 'Children's Caravan'. The van would arrive, the side opened down to form a stage, and a variety of people did bits and pieces, including Elton Hayes, who was well-known for his version of Edward Lear's 'The Owl and the Pussycat'. He accompanied himself on his guitar. Shirley Abicair's greatest hit must have been 'Little Boy Fishing off a Wooden Pier' (come, fish, bite, fish, swim along here). She used to sit there playing a zither to accompany herself. Aah, memories, memories! Slaynt diu ooilley, Bobby Bob |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Orac Date: 01 May 01 - 07:39 PM I have The own and the pussycat on 78 with riddle me diddle on the other side. Elton Hayes used to sing poems by Lewis Carrol put to music for children. Roger, yes I do live in Burton. I'm the resident (for my sins) at Burton Folk Club. Come and see us some time. Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST Date: 01 May 01 - 06:11 PM I can remember, again on the good old BBC LIGHT hearing a regular programme when, Elton Hays sings to a small guitar was announced by one of those treacley voiced announcers of those early 50's. Yes the Owl and the Pusseycat was the one I remember most and , of course he always opened with the Alan-a Dale song which went --------with a riddle me diddle me day , me day. With a riddle me diddle me day. or some such. Often wondered if that was an inspiration for the folk singer in "Round the Horne" and "Beyond our Ken" ? Who was it who played "Ramblin Sid Rompeau" ? |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST,Rogert he skiffler Date: 01 May 01 - 10:46 AM Orac, as we seem to be talking to ourselves, I'll indulge in a little thread creep. I gather you're in Burton. Earlier this year we stayed with a friend of ours there to go to the Derby Playhouse to see the wonderful Dawn Hope as Billie Holliday and took time out to visit the Bass Museum.'Nuff sed! RtS (surely someone else has some later info. on Elton Hayes? "Froggy went a-courting"; "Owl and the Pussycat", Alan-a-Dale in Robin Hood 1950s version...) |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 01 May 01 - 09:37 AM Though my web surfing didn't bring up anything else about his later career it pulled up a reference from Elton john admitting he'd pinched the name and Van Morrison remembering seeing him live. Some Children's tv references and second-hand records for sale but no fuller biography. There's a younger NZ actor with the same name that crops up as well. RtS |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Orac Date: 01 May 01 - 09:01 AM Roger, I've just looked at that web page. Obviously what the fellow told me years ago was a complete load of nonsense. Or maybe Hayes had relatives there. |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Orac Date: 01 May 01 - 08:56 AM Roger, You must be about the same age as me. My dad was born in 1914. The reason I say he came from Swadlincote is because I used to work with someone who said that his mother used to live next door to Elton Hays' family in Coppice Side. John Hill |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 01 May 01 - 08:50 AM There was a piece on Mike Raven's web page (www.freefolk.com) Issue 3 Sep-Oct 2000 which had his early life and a request for more information. It said he was born 1916 so he's the same age as my father (sorry, Dad, OK that isn't ancient!)if he's still with us. RtS |
|
Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Orac Date: 01 May 01 - 08:41 AM Yes I agree he would be pretty ancient. I saw a web page a while back that said he was still alive but I don't know how recent the info was. |

Subject: RE: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 01 May 01 - 08:31 AM According to the All-Movie guide he last appeared in a Canadian film The Journey with Genevieve Bujold in 1972.Given that he was established when I was a lad (must have been the first "folk" artist I was aware of) he is probably dead or pretty ancient. His films spanned 1948-1972 RtS |

Subject: Is Elton Hayes still about? From: Orac Date: 01 May 01 - 08:22 AM I was looking though some old threads and found references to Elton Hayes (and Shirley Abicair). I remember him on TV when I was very young. As far as I know he was originally from Swadlincote in Derbys and went on to play Alan-a-dale in one of the Disney versions of Robin Hood. (Not the one with Errol Flynn.) Shirley was a Austrailan who is unfortunately no longer with us but is Elton Hayes still alive? I have a couple of 78's by him. |
