Subject: RE: the possum From: Rapparee Date: 31 Jul 17 - 09:16 PM My brother did it. Baked the possum in my mother's oven. Stank to high heaven and came out greasy and damned near inedible. He buried it in that hole that's talked about. And that was that. Venison, fish, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, porcupine, bear, mountain lion, rattlesnake -- but not possum. |
Subject: RE: the possum From: keberoxu Date: 31 Jul 17 - 07:17 PM This sounds reminiscent of the Hedgehog recipe from the mother of several of the Gipsy Kings brothers (Los Reyes). |

Subject: RE: the possum From: Joe_F Date: 30 Jul 17 - 08:28 PM That last verse is a floating one. I have heard it attached to "Woody Knows Nothing". I just tried Google to see if there was a restaurant where I could have possum & sweetpotato. What do I see? A pretentious one in Richmond, VA, called L'Opossum -- and opossum is not on the menu! Really, there ought to be a restaurant featuring all the dishes celebrated in song. (I just missed an opportunity to have groundhog, once upon a time.) Gnu & Murray, if you are still around: Possum is not a noun in Latin; it is a verb, and means "I can". I have toyed with the idea of having a T-shirt made with a picture of an opossum & the legend "Haberi Possum" (i.e., "I Can Be Had"). |

Subject: RE: the possum From: MAG Date: 03 Oct 01 - 12:37 PM When I lived in Florida (project finger-cross), armadillos were known as possum on the half-shell. Maybe your restaurants should start serving them in NZ. |
Subject: RE: the possum From: Art Thieme Date: 02 Oct 01 - 07:07 PM In Texas it'd be an armadillo. In Wyoming a pronghorn.(or a Kat.) (no mention of A......s anywhere.) In Oregon it'd be a salmon. In Kansaw it'd be a tornado. In Illinois it'd be me,Art Thieme.

Subject: RE: the possum From: Jeri Date: 02 Oct 01 - 12:15 PM A page on George Jones is here with annoying popups, random apostrophes and flashing adverts. A .wav file with him singing a bit of Wild Irish Rose. Long load/short clip. I used to drink the stuff in college. Echhhh! |

Subject: RE: the possum From: Art Thieme Date: 02 Oct 01 - 11:07 AM From a P.M. I got yesterday I realized my possum joke in this thread really got to and offended another Mudcatter who told me I'd insulted her Arkansas accent one time 15 years ago too. I am sorry for those insults even if I do think the first one 15 years back never happened. And I'm sorry if I discommoded any other Mudcatters at the same time. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: the possum From: Murray MacLeod Date: 01 Oct 01 - 09:48 PM Gnu, the plural of possum would be "possa" rather than "possi". But somehow I doubt it. Murray |
Subject: RE: the possum From: gnu Date: 30 Sep 01 - 06:12 AM We don't have possums (possi ?) here in New Brunswick, Canada. We have porcupines. They also have a knack for staring at headlights. However, sometimes they get revenge on cars with bald tires, although steel belted radial tires are pretty much immune. Anyway, it's Partridge Eve here... you can have your Xmas and New Year's Eve... today is my second favourite day of the year. Fried on high heat, they can't be beat. But I don't use the truck cause they tend to lift and go for the headlights and grille. Merry Partridge Eve one and all. |
Subject: RE: the possum From: Bob Bolton Date: 29 Sep 01 - 11:50 PM G'day Allie, " ... Austrlaia ... protected. In New Zeland ... pests ... more possums than sheep! ... stick 'em all on Qantas and send them back to Aussie ..." Yes - some silly Kiwi person thought there was a quid to be made from possum fur ... but all his imported possums escaped and their descendants took possession of all the tree-hollows in New Zealand forests - dispossesing the birds from the forest canopy. Now there are hardly any birds left to eat the insect pests - and NZ's native forests will eventually be wiped out by the consequences of greed. (And the human population will all get on Qantas planes and move into flats in Bondi!) Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: the possum From: AliUK Date: 29 Sep 01 - 07:01 PM Down here in Brazil we don't got us any possums. But we got this 'ere crittur called a timbú which probably is related to them there antipodean and yankie thingies. It is good eatin'specially brased in a honey sauce. And they're much smarter 'n possums and hedgepigs as they don't git squished in the road. Though my parents two dobermans make short work of un. |
Subject: RE: the possum From: Gareth Date: 29 Sep 01 - 06:54 PM Aaaah ! The North American version of the Hedgehog - normally seen frisby shaped on the road. Actually, locally some evil minded gentlepeople stuffed a dead Hedgehog with a brick, and put it on the road - expensive crunching noises from the autos of the local hooligans. Yeeeaaaah ! Gareth |

Subject: RE: the possum From: Lin in Kansas Date: 29 Sep 01 - 05:34 PM Guest, Doc Rock--Now that depends--to a 54-year-old lady like meself, he looks a heck of a LOT better than Shania Twain or Faith Hill! (Even if the man has been rode hard and put away wet, as we say in the home country...) I've never heard his version of "Wild Irish Rose," but I'd bet he did it justice. Gareth, those poor little critters have entirely too many mean, evil predators looking for them (including big bad automobiles). Sometimes all they can think to do is to pretend they're already dead, in hopes their attacker will believe 'em. So--"playing possum" is quite similar to "sticking your head in the sand" as ostriches are famous for. Or, on the other hand, it could be a North American perversion if you ask Cleigh O'Possum's opinion... Lin

Subject: RE: the possum From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Sep 01 - 01:59 AM Actually, now I think of it, being as I'm on the top end of the globe, and on this island rather than your continent, I've never actually seen a live, mobile possum. I've travelled to Canada and New Zealand, but the only possums I've ever seen have been pizza shaped in the road. Even in the zoo all I've seen is a pile of bedding that quivered occasionally..... Seen a ground hog. Heck they're fat! Good eatin' on one of them!! LTS |
Subject: RE: the possum From: Lin in Kansas Date: 28 Sep 01 - 01:28 AM In my younger days, when I listened almost exclusively to country music (those were the only radio stations we could get in the Texas Panhandle--except for KOMO in Oklahoma City), I never much cared for George Jones. Oddly enough, it was for the very same reasons 'Spaw gave--The Possum always made ME feel suicidal! As I've grown older (but not up), I've managed to restrain my preconceptions long enough to actually listen to his singing--and Damn! Is he good! I can't think of a sadder song than "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Lin |
