Subject: RE: Roud Index of Folksongs and Broadsides From: Stewie Date: 30 Oct 03 - 12:52 AM What is the reason for the extra 40 quid - almost 100 Australian dollars - for overseas orders? Seems somewhat excessive to me. --Stewie. |

Subject: Origins: Roud Indexes From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 29 Oct 03 - 09:16 PM Steve Roud will provide his INDEX OF FOLK MUSIC and BROADSIDE INDEX subscription service for £60 in the UK and £100 Overseas. Subscription covers basic data plue at least one year of updates. Each data base stands at over 120,000 references. Read only version of the Cardbox database program is included. Details from Steve Roud, sroud@btinternet.com |

Subject: RE: Roud Index of Folksongs and Broadsides From: GUEST Date: 11 Feb 02 - 03:45 PM Data is as follows, comma and "___" delimited items (read into practically any database system), 20 items per entry. Folk song index data is in 4 files totalling 29.794 megabytes, and broadside index data is in 5 files totalling 28.380 megbytes. Asksam3 adds some column markers, and entry # markers, but not too much overhead, so the ASKSAM3 files run about 45 megabytes. Fixed column width database systems require much more storage space (most of which is practically empty) and run 6 times as much storage, or more.
Note that this is for traditional song research, and field recordings are included, but 'revival' singers aren't. No songs from Ewan MacColl, Jean Redpath, or other professional entertainers.

Subject: RE: Roud Index of Folksongs and Broadsides From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Feb 02 - 02:11 PM I've been tantalized by the Roud Index for a long time - but that hundred-dollar price tag puts me off. Is there a way for occasional users to get the Roud Index information for free, or at a reasonable price? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Roud Index of Folksongs and Broadsides From: GUEST Date: 11 Feb 02 - 11:02 AM There's a review of his indexes in the 2001 issue of Folk Music Journal (written by me at the request of the editor). The latest version was issued just last month on a CD. I have loaded the 2 databases into ASKSAM3. There are now 114,773 entries in the folk song index, and 119,651 in the broadside index.
