Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Absent Friends (Keith Hancock) From: BrendanB Date: 24 Oct 12 - 09:15 AM It is a very good song. He told me it was written about his brother who died suddenly. But I haven't seen him in years and don't expect to in the future so I cannot confirm this. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Absent Friends (Keith Hancock) From: Arkie Date: 23 Oct 12 - 01:48 PM Glad for the success in finding the right song. I would have suggested "Special Absent Friends" which though different is along similar lines but addressed to many who have gone on before. I have heard the song only by Speed Limit, a country duo from the British Isles, until today when searching youtube for a link to post here. Knowing nothing about the origins of the song I accepted the Speed Limit song as a tribute to those known and loved from earlier times. Some of the youtube videos seemed to have political overtones. Special Absent Friends Our Special Absent Friends The time has come to say good night For every road must end To the ones who care and are always there Our very special friends Lets say good night to those we love And maybe shed a tear But before we close Lets think of those We love who cant be here Lets raise our hands (a glass) to absent friends For every road must end You'll always be there in our hearts Our special absent friends And when its time for us to go And our long journey ends You'll never be alone you see You'll be with absent friends Lets raise our hands (a glass) to absent friends For every road must end You'll always be there in our hearts Our special absent friends. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Absent Friends (Keith Hancock) From: Howard Jones Date: 23 Oct 12 - 08:36 AM I used to play in a band with Keith (the Electropathics) and I heard him sing this song many times. So far as I can recall he didn't put a pause between the phrases and I've always put your first interpretation on the line (although the second is also a perfectly valid reading of it, imo) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Absent Friends (Keith Hancock) From: Mysha Date: 22 Oct 12 - 05:02 PM (Hm, the posts are listed latest first here. I wonder if I'm writing the oldest post now.) Hi, I've seen the lyrics to this song in several places, and they always include: "I wonder why it never happened for me." - The singer wonders why for him time does not heal wounds. But most people I heard sing the song sing; " I wonder why: It never happened for me." - The singer wonders why people say that time heals wounds (as for him it never happened). Does anyone have sources to confirm either? Lyrics that came with the original, Keith Hancock's own singing, that sort of thing? Bye, Mysha |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Help with a Vin Garbutt song. From: GUEST,Steve Date: 11 Dec 02 - 01:34 PM Excellent song. I, like Kitty, first heard it from Vin, but since then have sveral times heard Keith Hancock sing it, and his is for me without doubt the definitive version. I prefer the order of the verses in Keith's version, too. It almost seems pedantic to mention this, but I'm sure he said he'd written it following the death of his brother, not his father. |

Produced by Greenwich Village in Sowerby Bridge West Yorks. The full version is as follows ABSENT FRIENDS ch Time Heals Wounds they say,Time takes the pain away Iwonder why it never happens for me Its years since youy went away But i miss you night and day Why you had to go is a mystry to me What seemed important then becomes trivial when Fate deals the card that forces your hand All the places we'd been All the things we had seen No more in the future it just isn't planned ch Its all very strange but when you went I changed It just seemed to happen with the passing of each day I don't understand Is it part of a plan Does on person grow when another fades away ch Small things you'd do weavepictures of you They're printed for life on the back of my mind I was always so sure Your life was so pure To the faults and to bad times a loved one stays blind ch I always found that when you were around You helped we with worries and eased all my fears You always had times for problems of mine A shoulder to cry on a listening ear CH |

Subject: Lyr Add: ABSENT FRIENDS (Keith Hancock) From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Dec 02 - 03:01 PM It's a Keith Hancock song and it's called "Absent Friends" - I understand that Keith wrote it after his father died. I learnt the words from Vin's recording, so may not have got them all right..... ABSENT FRIENDS - Keith Hancock I always found when you were around You'd help me through sorrow, you'd ease all my fears For you always had time for troubles of mine A shoulder to cry on, a listening ear Chorus: Time heals wounds they say Time takes the pain away I wonder why it never happened for me It's years since you went away I miss you night and day Why you had to go is a mystery to me The things that you'd do, the pictures of you Are printed for life on the back of my mind You were always so sure, your ways were so pure Through faults and the bad times a lover stayed blind What seemed important then becomes trivial when Fate deals the card that forces your hand And the places we've been, together we've seen No more in the future, no more in the plan It's all very strange, but when you went I changed It just seemed to happen as day turned to day And I don't understand, is it part of a plan Can one person grow as another one fades |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Help with a Vin Garbutt song. From: Banjo-Flower Date: 10 Dec 02 - 02:56 PM I think this is a Keith Hancock song not Vin Garbutt Gerry |
Subject: Lyr Req: Help with a Vin Garbutt song. From: GUEST,Jim Date: 10 Dec 02 - 02:40 PM I started a thread earlier today (click here) because I thought that the song I was after was called 'When the Tide Turns.' Spot kindly posted the words to that, but it turns out that that isn't the one. The song I'm after is a sad lament on the end of a relationship. The only bits that I can half remember are something along the lines of: "Time takes the pain away, time heals wounds, they say. I wonder why it never happened to me" Any ideas? And sorry for the red herring earlier. Jim |
