Subject: RE: BS: Searching for St. James churches in Oz From: Marion Date: 26 Oct 03 - 02:32 PM Thanks for the leads, all. I'll pass these on to my mom. I suspect that going through the telephone listings is probably the most systematic way. Helen, we don't have any info about the church other than what I mentioned above - in fact the only info we have that I didn't mention already is my sister's Korean name. Bob, thanks for your offer. The thing is, I'm sure there are many St. James churches in Australia so it's very unlikely that any given church is the one. So I'd hate to ask a friend of a friend of a friend to research a remote possibility. Thanks anyway. Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Searching for St. James churches in Oz From: Bob Bolton Date: 26 Oct 03 - 05:50 AM G'day Marion, I can at least pursue some history of such a group, if it was associated with the old St James Anglican in King St, Sydney. One of the former members of the Bush Music Club became a Deaconess at St James ... and my co-editor on the BMC's Mulga Wire, Colin Fong, has maintained contact with her. She may well be able to steer me to the right historian / archivist to find if such a sponsorship originated there. Regards, Bob bBolton |

Subject: RE: BS: Searching for St. James churches in Oz From: Helen Date: 25 Oct 03 - 07:25 AM I'm betting that there is a St James Church in just about every parish in Oz. There is one in Morpeth, which is 20 miles north of Newcastle, New South Wales, where I live. If you looked in the white pages or yellow pages you could search each listed area and it might take a couple of hours or more, but you should find all of them if you are thorough. Do you have any more info on the area or even state that the church was in? Could you contact the organisation which arranged the child sponsorhip programme? I just put the search terms "orphanage" & "Taegu" in Google and got a few sites. This is the first one I looked at. Humanitarian efforts during the Korean War Helen |

Subject: RE: BS: Searching for St. James churches in Oz From: Hrothgar Date: 24 Oct 03 - 11:49 PM Catholic: St James' Church, 165 Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo, Queensland, 4151, Australia. St James' College, 201 Boundary Street, Brisbane, Queensland, 4000, Australia Those are from personal knowledge around Brisbane, and I can't see any more in the phone book. There is always the risk that if it was in a small country town that has lost population, it might have shut down. ... and let's not start on wheher Anglicans are Catholics or not! :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Searching for St. James churches in Oz From: GUEST,MMario Date: 24 Oct 03 - 02:22 PM There are St. James churches in the following places in Australia: Sydney (on King Street) (This is the oldest Anglican parish in Sydney) Carlton Adelaid Hills Point Lonsdale Ivanhoe Glen Iris Newborough Wellington Point these are all Anglican parish's - there are no Roman Catholic "st. Jame"'s in australia according to their online listings. In addition there is a "st. James the lesser" and a "St. James the Greater" - but places like that tend to use the full name - so I didn't include their locations. This list from "Anglican's online" |

Subject: BS: Searching for St. James churches in Oz From: Marion Date: 23 Oct 03 - 06:26 PM Hi all. This may sound like a strange request, but I figured that Mudcat was the place for strange requests. Two of my sisters are adopted from South Korea; they came to Canada at the age of 10 after living in a World Vision orphanage in Taegu. One sister was sponsored by my mother (one of those foster child programs where you make a monthly donation for an individual), and the other was sponsored by "the youth group of St. James Church in Australia." This was between 1966 and 1974 (not necessarily all of that time). My mother has recently decided that, what with the internet and all, it might be possible to track down that church, correspond with a former youth group member, and possibly even obtain pictures or letters (we have no other info/pics from my sister's childhood). What I am looking for is some suggestions on how you would undertake this search in a reasonably thorough but efficient way. What my mother has started doing is yahooing "St. James" and "Australia" and looking at each match individually, but I suspect that there's a better way. Perhaps some of the larger denominations would have online directories of all their parishes? Or do you have your telephone book listings on a website? Thanks mates, Marion (secretly expecting a Mudcat miracle where someone will say, "Oh yes, I remember sponsoring a Korean orphan when I went to youth group at St. James). |
