Subject: RE: BS: Science & Religion BBC1 this Sunday From: Amos Date: 04 Dec 05 - 08:21 AM I pray I may have an opportunity to make that choice. I have been hard on ants and spiders lately, but I didn't teach 'em no technology. Figgered they couldn't handle it wisely. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Science & Religion BBC1 this Sunday From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Dec 05 - 07:40 AM "Don't be f*ckin' with them lower-tech people's heads, turning 'em on to yer high-tech sh*t. Leave'em alone and let 'em figger it all out in their own way and time." "Thou Shalt Not Fast Forward the Backward." Sort of. It's about sovereignty of species development. I guess. OK-- I Googled it for you, Lazykins: PRIME DIRECTIVE As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Star Fleet personnel may interfere with the healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes the introduction of superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Star Fleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation. Bow down! :~) ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Science & Religion BBC1 this Sunday From: Amos Date: 03 Dec 05 - 11:47 PM What is the Prime Directive from Star Trek? A |

Subject: RE: BS: Science & Religion BBC1 this Sunday From: wysiwyg Date: 03 Dec 05 - 10:27 PM I actually saw a Mudcatter cite the Prime Directive from Star Trek once (without directly crediting Star Trek) as the moral imperative behind a decision that should have been taken, in that Catter's opinion-- completely seriously. As though a vast number of people live by it in completely harmonious agreement. As if it's not a TV show fiction. I mean, it's a great directive, but the way it was used as a foundation was really creepy! Not sure who/what we were assumed to be worshipping, if anything, but it was weird to see a cult based on TV-watching become an assumption that one not only COULD live the reality, or SHOULD live the reality, but that "WE" ALL DO. ~Susan |

Surely no subject brings about more cussin-er, uh, discussion, not to mention wars. Jeepers, wish the show was playing in the states! |

Subject: RE: BS: Science & Religion BBC1 this Sunday From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Dec 05 - 02:48 PM I have tried this once before but you never know your luck. Some religions were started a long time ago and some much more recently. Quite a few in the late 19C and the Church of Scientology, I think, in the 1950's. How about a new one? Most, but not all, religions have: 1. A mysterious figure who reveals or shows the path to (?) truth 2. A book 3. Followers to spread the message 4. Somewhere to go. 5. Dietry and dress habits 6. Other stuff I suggest; 1. Albert Wainwright (AW to the converted) 2. Wainwright's Guide to the fells 3. Count me in 4. The English Lake District 5. Need I say more? |

Subject: BS: Science & Religion BBC1 this Sunday From: Dave Masterson Date: 02 Dec 05 - 08:44 AM I know this is a subject close to the hearts of many Mudcatters and regularly engenders fierce debate (I have the scars to prove it!), so the following programme, presented by Professor Robert Winston, which goes out this Sunday 4 December on BBC1 at 2100 GMT UK time, should be interesting. It examines the relationship of science and religion. The Story of God |
