Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 24 Dec 05 - 07:58 AM Heartily concur, saulgoldie, that's what does it for me too. A very merry one to all, and may each of you have the kind of New Year you would arrange for those you love the best. Don T. |
Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: saulgoldie Date: 24 Dec 05 - 07:42 AM We are at the root, social beings. In the case of the present company, it is a strong interest in folk music, to restate the obvious. Later today (for me), it is family. Humans are at their best when they gather, play together, and work together, cooperatively. That is what brings us together. |

Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: alanabit Date: 23 Dec 05 - 06:12 AM A good punch up! No, seriously, most of the folks, who turn up here, are the sort of guys with whom I would enjoy a pint and a song, or share a railway compartment with on a long journey. I met a few of our number in the UK this autumn and it was just like that. I don't expect to agree with everyone all the time, but it is becoming my favourite local. I come in here and there are usually a few folks around, whom I want to listen to. |
Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: katlaughing Date: 22 Dec 05 - 11:47 PM Ah, gnu...thanks, darlin'...I like that. Interesting postings, folks. I think I could have given this a better name, more in sync with the poem, but it seemed right, at the time. I do think the kindness of our Mudcat community is extraordinary and speaks of the poem's sentiments every time one of us shares, gives, cares, etc. It makes me proud to know y'all. Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 22 Dec 05 - 10:59 PM Common interests and desires... with its upside and downside. At its best, its an instant connection, whether it's a love of folk music, movies, faith or bowling. Never underestimate bowling. On its downside, coming together because of common interests can exclude other points of view and interests and can become very insular. That's why I was thinking of starting a bowling league on Mudcat. Just to make life more adventurous. Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: Bobert Date: 22 Dec 05 - 08:35 PM BigPinkLad all over this one.... Yeah, what brings us together is "love"... Okay, maynot that drooling kinds stuff that teenagers have but the kind that makes us stop to help someone on the side of the road... Or to spend time with the dieing.... Yeah, that's love, and that is ***exactly*** what "brings us together"... There are folks, however, who don't have the concept of love, that love for their fellow man or for this Earth, and so they do whatever they can to create things to tear us apart... The start wars, they discriminate aginst minorites, they find any emotional issue to keep us from bridging gaps... But, hey, if we can collectively see thru these folks motives, which always come down to personal greed, and just keep our good eye on a star and focused on love of life, love of out fellow amn and love of our planet, we will be eternally stuck together like glue... Bobert p.s. Yeah, I know that I do battle with the "divisionists' here who represent the greedy folks but I do battle with love in my heart... |

Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: bobad Date: 22 Dec 05 - 02:15 PM At the most basic level being a member of a pack is probably hardwired into us via our genes. In early times survival depended on being succesful both in acquiring food and being protected from predators, this was most effectively accomplished in groups, thus through the mechanism of genetic selection the survivors passed on their "come on people now, everybody get together" genes. |

Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: Alba Date: 22 Dec 05 - 01:46 PM From Rudyard Kipling: "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind." Lovely idea for a Thread Kat. Lovely Poem. I look back on the Threads from previous Holiday Seasons on the Mudcat and giggle at all the fun and laughter on those Threads...those Threads that bind us:>) There seems to be a different atmosphere these days. Sign of the times perhaps. I find myself posting less and less (ok ok...some folks may be glad of that and see it as an act of kindness:>) I read some Threads these days and wince at some of the cruelty in the words posted by some. Kindness is not and never has been and never will be in short supply on the Mudcat though...perhaps the Humor and Seasonal Spirit has just went underground for a while where cruelty can't find it..***BG*** Much love to all the Friends I have made here and also to those I have yet to meet...Cyberwise and in person. Again, lovely Opening Quote Kat... Brightest Blessings Jude |

Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: Amos Date: 22 Dec 05 - 11:48 AM Human affinities are just mind-boggling sometimes, aren't they? They always start with communication, though, whether of the ordinary sort or something more ethereal. That's the keystone. 'Course, some sort of common ground has to exist for any communication to occur, but after all, we all have the shared reality of being locked into bipedal organic meat-tickets to start with; that defines a lot of the game at the outset. Imagine what the game would become if that were optional instead of mandatory... A |
Subject: RE: BS: What brings us together... From: GUEST,Mingulay at work Date: 22 Dec 05 - 11:41 AM With my family it seems to be christenings, we would appear to have a long and fruitful history of begatting. Wedlock not always being a precursor. On a personal level, with my current new partner, it was the internet. |
