He's a half-bright counter-phobic paranoid type, pugnacious and incapable of sustained thought. But it doesn't matter; he's a puppet. His bits move as he's directed.

I take it neither of you want to see yourself as "someone who makes Bush's bits move", eh? I can understand. If I had such a power, there's no telling WHAT I would do with it!! :P:

petr...Bush can't get off the hook that way.

The only answer to our environmental problems is REDUCED energy production and use.

This course of action does not sit well with those who make Bushes bits move...Ake

I agree, Ron -- in the public media, he is beginning to look like the weak wolf who gets chosen when the rest of the pack is starving. Not that he didn't earn every kick in the nuts he gets.

We'll see if his PR machine can do anything for him tonight. There was a great article today somewhere about how long it took to find jury candidates during voir-dire for the Scooter Libby trial, because so many of the prospective jurors allowed as they wouldn't believe anything the Bush administration said.

My point is the tide has turned--Bush no longer sets the agenda--and he's even starting to recognize this. It's fairly obvious that his only concern now is his "legacy"--and that legacy is now the Iraq disaster. As petr points out, Bush could even make progress on some issues--like global warming--if he were willing to pull a Nixon in China and combine with Democrats on this. Of course this wouldn't change the fact that his "presidency"" such as it is, is totally dependent on the Iraq situation.

Another area in which he could provide a service--and improve his "legacy", if only slightly, is immigration reform, one of the very few areas in which he makes sense---there's no question, that,, as he has said, at least at one point, a path to citizenship for all illegal immigrants is the way to go. Tancredo and other troglodytes are fated to wind up left in the dust.

No, no, Don. That should read his mind IS a terrible waste. As has been abundantly demonstrated.

Any criticism of Bush is met with either a weary sigh or a cry of "Horsepucky!" This is what passes for rational discussion.

"A mind is a terrible thing to waste."

Shrub (nice) is inherently defensive.

Atacking Iraq was a form of defence - you know,'Attack is the best defence'.

Needing to be richer and richer is another form of defence.

   Not listening is inherently defensive.

actually the one thing that would save Bush - and provide him a legacy..
is if he were to come up with a some kind of new alternative energy plan, that would stimulate investment in renewable clean energy that would allow the US to free its dependence on unstable mideast oil and at the same time - fight the man-made global warming- and give a America a lead in new energy technology..
(not that there is any one solution.. it can be a combination of better battery technology to make plug-in hybrids far more efficient - wind, tidal, solar, bio-fuel perhaps ) In fact congress has increased investment to many of these such as plug-in hybrids, ethanol plants etc.
BUt despite his 'America is addicted to oil' speech, We do know that as an oilman this isnt likely.

Amory Lovins (the physicist/energy consultant) starts his presentation with photo of a group of US soldiers in front ofan (uninsulated/tent) in some mideast desert with a massive air conditioner on the side and an a massive generator in the background - working at maximum trying to cool the desert. A picture that speaks volumes of Americas energy policy.

Given the shrub's past behaviour, I'll believe this when some independent third party provides proof.

From the Wall St Journal: today: 18 Jan 2007

1) " Bush is to stop warrantless surveillance and seek court oversight. The abrupt about-face came after a year of adamant insistence by the administration and its allies that the 1970's system of secret wiretap requests to a special FISA court had hamstrung the the post-Sept 11 war on terror, and appeared to be recognition that continuing the battle in a Democratic Congress would be unwise."

2) "House Democrats are intent on forcing a change in Bush policy on global warming, and Pelosi is willing to bypass her chairmen to do it".

Regarding the Pelosi plan, there is opposition within her own party--especially by Michigan Congressman Dingell, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee,--and, of course, already feeling the sting of Michigan job losses in the auto industry. And in the Senate a probable filibuster by Oklahoma Republican Inhofe must be taken into account.

But there's no question who has the initiative now---and it ain't Bush.
