Subject: Dating Stan Rogers CDs. From: theballadeer Date: 24 Jun 25 - 02:07 PM Does anyone know if the CD versions of the albums "For the Family" (1983) and "From Fresh Water" (1984) were released at the same time as the vinyl LPs? I have copies of both (CDs) and unlike Stan's first 4 albums that were released on CD, neither (of the first 2) mention being remastered, or give any alter date. |

Subject: RE: Dating Stan Rogers CDs. From: theballadeer Date: 24 Jun 25 - 08:07 PM I am familiar with Mainly Norfolk. The "For Family CD" I have is on the Folk Tradition (same as the LP), not the Gadfly label, which is dated. I am not sure the 1990 date is correct on "From Fresh Water", as Stan's first 4 albums were remastered in 1990 and that is stated in the credits of all 4 CDs. But "From Fresh Water" does not list any remastering in the credits. |

Subject: RE: Dating Stan Rogers CDs. From: cnd Date: 25 Jun 25 - 07:56 AM Unfortunately, the disappointing answer is that you may not be able to find the exact release dates. You'd be amazed how many brand spankin' new CDs I buy even to this day which don't have a release date anywhere on them. Discogs is a good resource. They list 12 versions of For the Family and 13 versions of From Fresh Water. Based on your descriptions, I'd assume the correct releases on there are [r2362419] and [r2501309], both of which are CDs with no release date. Anecdotally, though it's possible, I'd be surprised if the CDs were the same age as the album's original release years. CDs were commercially released in 1982, and for most of the first decade were only available from the largest, most commercially-successful artists and performers. |

Subject: RE: Dating Stan Rogers CDs. From: theballadeer Date: 25 Jun 25 - 01:04 PM Upon further research, "From Fresh Water" was originally remastered for CD in 1990 (according to the 2012 "Borealis" reissue). Therefore, it was likely first reissued on CD in 1990 with Stan's first four LPs. |
Subject: RE: Dating Stan Rogers CDs. From: DaveRo Date: 25 Jun 25 - 02:57 PM Is there any relevant information on disc itself, around the edge or around the hole? The format might tell you earliest date it could have been made. Matrix and Disc ID for Audio CDs Discogs includes this information for some versions - eg Gadfly. If you can find out the Disc ID of a remastered version, and yours is the same, then they are probably identical - or at least the track lengths are the same to the second. CDDB used to identify CDs by Disk ID. |

Subject: RE: Dating Stan Rogers CDs. From: GUEST,Lin Date: 27 Jun 25 - 10:36 PM To cnd, Ah yes, that is my pet peeve too in finding no release dates on a CD. I also have a lot of obscure folk LP's and many do not have release dates either.(albums never released on CD format). I will try to look everywhere,on the CD or record and liner notes - but sometimes just no release date to be found. |

From: GUEST Date: 11 Jul 25 - 03:44 AM While reading through the discussions here, it occurred to me that some members might find this information useful, especially given the ever-increasing cost of international shipping. I recently came across a compiled list of Discogs sellers who offer free shipping to UK buyers, provided you meet certain order thresholds. The list comes from a site called Backstage Bargains ( https://www.backstagebargains.co.uk/show/Discogs ) and includes both European and US-based sellers. Here are the details as currently listed: Seller Free UK shipping on orders over FormatJunky all orders japhy £75.00 liberationrecords £75.00 HipHopTough £85.00 Alwills £120.00 vinyleers €125.00 Have-A-Break €170.00 XO_Music €300.00 enogaph €500.00 digginmichel €750.00 Schatten_Records $1,000.00 While some of these minimum order values are fairly high, a few (notably japhy, liberationrecords, and FormatJunky) are quite attainable if you’re planning to purchase multiple items anyway. I thought it worth sharing here in case anyone has been hesitant to order from abroad due to postage costs, and if anyone has experience with any of these sellers, I’d be interested to hear how reliable they’ve been. |
