Subject: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 03:41 PM The New Beginnings - new foundation (maeve & TL) thread kataughing started for us has hit 500. Some 'Catters find long threads difficult to access, so here's a succeeding chapter. I'll post updates here. Maeve |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: fat B****rd Date: 02 Feb 11 - 03:53 PM Hello, Maeve. I am one of those 'Catters who has trouble with multi-post threads. You've always been good to me so may I wish you and yours much happiness and good fortune. Best regards from Charlie in Dunfermline |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Feb 11 - 07:48 PM welcome to your new thread! May it keep growing (& not overwhelm those who have trouble with multi-post threads!) |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 07:57 PM Thanks. If you start having trouble loading this thread, just send me a PM. I'm working on a online Yurt photo album. Access will be reserved to those who send me a PM to request a link; not to be shared with anyone. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Jeri Date: 02 Feb 11 - 08:28 PM If you use the links for "d" (50 posts, in descending order) or the number (also 50 posts at a time) you should NOT have problems. I think it's a case of people limiting what they can do here and what forcing OTHER people to do things to accommodate them based on what they are or are not willing to try/learn... unless you guys can't load 50-post threads. Anyway, I look forward to more posts about the progress. I bet you can't wait for your new home to be habitable, but winter sure doesn't seem to be making things easy. All the sweeter when you ARE able to move in. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 08:44 PM I remember when I had dial-up. Even when I used the tricks mentioned it took a looong time for threads to load. I choose to keep any thread I start at a reasonable size, but if me making a new thread is a problem, just whistle, Jeri. Yes, we are surely looking forward to getting the yurt to move-in condition. Maeve |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Jeri Date: 02 Feb 11 - 08:56 PM I had a dial-up, and never had a problem with 50-post pages, unless people wrote a LOT. I think it's psychological: pages of 50 posts may seem huge, IF you know it's a page of 50 out of a 500 post thread. Separate threads still have the cumulative total that only one thread would have, but may just feel smaller. Anyway, I'll leave it alone as I'm off-topic, and I'd bet that bothers more people than thread size. It's a bit weird, but when I look at photos of your yurt, I can almost smell the wood. I suppose that wears off after a while, like the new car smell, but it must be very refreshing while it lasts. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 02 Feb 11 - 09:02 PM It does smell good, Jeri. If it wears off we can just set up a ladder and sand some ceiling. I'll let you know when we do! And thanks. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Jeri Date: 02 Feb 11 - 09:17 PM I think you can buy essential oil in "cedar", but I hope it's a good long while until the original scent wears off! Think I'll go sniff my Apollonio and work on a better mood... |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Bobert Date: 02 Feb 11 - 09:52 PM Great home... |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: ChanteyLass Date: 03 Feb 11 - 01:06 AM Thank you for creating the new thread. Because I had read the old thread from the beginning, I did not have trouble following it. I would scroll down to new posts by their dates. However, when other long threads had started before I was aware of Mudcat, I found reading every reply time-consuming and when I reached the bottom and wanted to post I wondered if I had forgotten something I'd read and was being redundant. Sometimes I was, and people told me so! Oops (and that may still happen)! And when threads were very long, I sometimes skipped them altogether! Sometimes I would read the first few posts and most recent posts to try to decide if I should read all the posts but invariably decided to read them all even if I might forget what I'd read. Anyway, I continue to find your yurt-building fascinating. For people newer to Mudcat than me, I am glad this thread has links to the old thread and to Jacqui's photos. For those who have dial-up, I remember when (not too long ago) all I had was an email machine. No photos, no weblinks, nothing but email texts. It seemed adequate at the time, but I am grateful to have better access now. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: VirginiaTam Date: 03 Feb 11 - 02:40 AM Our log home always smelled of wood even 15 years into living in it. It was about 3 years old when we moved in. Of course that is much more exposed surface area of wood. You may get accustomed to the smell and think the scent not strong enough. But if you go away for a couple of days you will realise how strong it is. It also gets stronger in summer time. Every spring and fall I used an upholster brush to vacuum the dust off the log and it would refresh the scent too. Very excited and happy for you and TrueLove. Big grin for and from me this morning reading this thread. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 05 Feb 11 - 05:45 AM Our chooks are fine. They are in a coop inside a shed, with an insulated window for light and passive solar heat. With fresh warm water as often as needed, plenty of layer pellets and grains, and apples, they manage just fine. When it's as cold as it is this week, they also get a warm oat mash with sunflower seeds and yoghurt. Usually they enjoy going outside on sunny days, but we're keeping them inside during this winter of severe weather. At night their own feathers and their roosting neighbors keep them warm. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 05 Feb 11 - 02:54 PM Jacqui, they were just saying, "Salutations and welcome!" We found a sink today; &3. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Ebbie Date: 05 Feb 11 - 03:21 PM Speaking of "warm" mash, did you know that is a method frequently used in the 'olden days' to bring mature hens to lay? My grandmother told me about it years ago and I've used it with complete success in the years since. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: jacqui.c Date: 06 Feb 11 - 08:02 AM We do Hils. I've used them a few times, both looking for and getting rid of stuff. Much better than adding to landfills. Maeve - did you have a storm there last night? |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 06 Feb 11 - 08:16 AM We had snow, sleet, lightning, thunder, rain, and more snow last night. Does that qualify? |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: jacqui.c Date: 06 Feb 11 - 08:19 AM That sure do! Hope all is OK this morning. It looks like a pretty day down here. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: Ebbie Date: 07 Feb 11 - 12:48 PM Another thing my grandmother used to say: When there is a thunderstorm whatever season it is in will intensify: i.e. in summer it will turn hotter, in winter it will bring colder weather. I don't see how that is possible in your case, however! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's a Yurt...Maeve & Truelove From: maeve Date: 07 Feb 11 - 02:07 PM I like learning grandmother and grandfather sayings, Ebbie. In our case, today brought a blue mackerel sky with temperatures in the forties (F). It also brought the utility company to connect our new meter and install the new cable. Best of all, today brought the first egg of spring from one of our bantams. I do believe we'll make it to another spring. Maeve |
