Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 Aug 10 - 02:35 PM Keep it up! Withdrawal may take some time. Stay away from the corner saloon. Now I have to have a non-smoking room when I travel. Cigarette smoke has become almost unbearable. As my system changed, I became a strong anti-. All restaurants here are non-smoking by ordinance, which is good. Also all stores are no-smokng. Smokers have to go outside. It is fun to watch them dancing around to keep from freezing in cold bleak midwinter. |

One of my friends was moaning about a significant birthday a few years back - 50!! Think of the alternative, I said & now she's even older & very happy with 2 gorgeous grandbabies! Grandbabies are much better than cigarettes, & as Amos says - URGES PASS (worth repeating) sandra One of my mates got sober some years back following the AA program, but had to go to a detox to be rid of his nicotine addiction as it was so much stronger/deeper/heavier, & he was a very heavy 7-days, 24-hour drinker. |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: Little Hawk Date: 31 Aug 10 - 01:38 PM Hey, Dan, keep in mind how awful the cigarette smoke smells to your pals, the wiener dogs. They have very sensitive noses! You're not only doing yourself a big favor by quitting, you're doing them one too. ;-) They are all on your side, man, rooting for you. |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: olddude Date: 31 Aug 10 - 08:35 PM Naw Tam, no more brick smashing. I gave up teaching that stuff a long time ago because it wasn't right to train anyone in it. Likewise those bricks never did anything to me to deserve being smashed (smile) and I don't want to break my hand doing silly things .. so I won't do it again I promise. Much easier to play guitar you are right. LH, never thought about that, my wiener dogs use to sneeze when they jumped on me after a cig .. you are right (Light bulb just went on) |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: Ebbie Date: 02 Sep 10 - 12:33 PM It just occurs to me, Dan, that you have not 'given up smoking', you have opted for health. Speaking of lung cancer, in the days when I was 'opting for health', a physician told our 'stop-smoking' class that lung cancer is a kind death compared with a death from emphysema. I still didn't quit; it took another five years. |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: Slag Date: 03 Sep 10 - 01:30 AM You're still on my mind, olddude! I quit at age 19! Nineteen! how hooked could he have been (you may ask)? Well, I had been smoking steady about three years and had a 2 1/2 pack a day habit and a morning cough to go with it, so I know! My motivation came from on high but I don't want this to devolve into one of those God-arguement things. This is about you. I'm just saying that WHATEVER it takes to beat this, do it! It is so worth it and we are all pulling for you and anyone else who wants to throw off the chains. I remember that months after I quit I would find my hand flying up to my shirt pocket and I would see that and be amazed at the power those things had held over me. Whatever it takes man, win this one. |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: Ebbie Date: 03 Sep 10 - 01:37 AM Slag, after I had well and truly quit, one night I went out with some friends. It was a late night and we stopped for breakfast before going home. There were six of us and we were laughing and talking. At a certain point I realized my date was staring at me- I followed his eyes to the ashtray: I was stomping my crust of toast into it. |

I will beat it. You bet they hold power over you. I wake up in the morning get my coffee and look for my cigs ... now I just look for my coffee and and forget the cigs .. its nuts ... I read it is as hard as quitting some hard core drugs .. well never been on hard core drugs but it is hard enough for sure |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: Slag Date: 04 Sep 10 - 02:07 AM You have the right idea, Dan. If you fall, get right back up. And yes, the "Big Guy" will give you the strength. I used to do some counseling work with addicts of varying substance including heroine, meth, crack, etc. at to a soul the all said kicking nicotine was the hardest of all. When you've kicked this one know that you can do anything with the right motivation and a little help from above---AND from your friends! And for playing the guitar, do it! The more stuff you can do without the smokes that you used to do WITH the smokes the more certain your victory! |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 weeks so far (olddude giving up smoking) From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 26 Sep 10 - 02:07 PM I think it wonderful when someone can cease a habit of long standing, so kudos to OD. I never use the words "I quit" with respect to smoking. I may make it a regular habit tomorrow. But I think not. |
