Sir jOhn are you OK? - you have been very quiet lately, maybe you are on holiday from the curry ship, we are missing your humorous contributions, it could do with a little light entertainment round here at the moment.

Yes I miss him too. Sometimes I just have the time to log on briefly...scan the new threads and see he hasn't been in. NO disrespect to other threads but I often don't have the time to take part and just fancy a quick laugh.

When I do have the time to browse around I find alot of very interesting 'stuff' to read. And lately alot of bickering best avoided.

Come back soon jOhn. Your public awaits.

Correct you can spell it any way you like, but I wouldn't recommend spelling with an "e" in a Glasgow pub on a Saturday night

Whiskey is the Irish spelling and the Scots can be a touch temperamental about people spelling their WHISKY with an "e" in it

Ah Freda on the subject of cats in the landing on their feet context, I have a question for you.
If toast always falls butter side down, and a cat always lands on its' feet. What would happen if you strapped a bit of buttered toast to the cat's back?

I expect it's the reverse in Australia where you live!

You can use the above assembly as a cheap alternative to magnets in a levitaiting monorail.
I'll find the full article....

Bunnahabhain.

Subject: RE: BS: Is Sir jOhn OK or is he ill?
From: Bunnahabhain
Date: 01 Feb 05 - 09:07 AM

There we go, if you really needed to know...

When a cat is dropped, it always lands on its feet, and when toast is dropped, it always lands buttered side down. Therefore, if a slice of toast is strapped to a cat's back, buttered side up, and the animal is then dropped, the two opposing forces will cause it to hover, spinning inches above the ground. If enough toast-laden felines were used, they could form the basis of a high-speed monorail system.

........and then this mail got this reply from one of the recipients

I've been thinking about this cat/toast business for a while.
In the buttered toast case, it's the butter that causes it to land buttered side down - it doesn't have to be toast, the theory works equally well with Jacob's crackers. So to save money you just miss out the toast - and butter the cats. Also, should there be an imbalance between the effects of cat and butter, there are other substances that have a stronger affinity for carpet.

Probability of carpet impact is determined by the following simple formula:

p = s * t(t)/t(c) where p is the probability of carpet impact.

s is the "stain" value of the toast-covering substance - an indicator of the effectiveness of the toast topping in permanently staining the carpet. Chicken Tikka Masala, for example, has a very high s value, while the s value of water is zero.

t(c) and t(t) indicate the tone of the carpet and topping - the value of p being strongly related to the relationship between the colour of the carpet and topping, as even chicken Tikka Masala won't cause a permanent and obvious stain if the carpet is the same colour. So it is obvious that the probability of carpet impact is maximized if you use chicken Tikka Masala and a white carpet - in fact this combination gives a p value of one, which is the same as the probability of a cat landing on its feet.

Therefore a cat with chicken Tikka Masala on its back will be certain to hover in mid air, while there could be problems with buttered toast as the toast may fall off the cat, causing a terrible monorail crash resulting in nauseating images of members of the royal family visiting accident victims in hospital, and politicians saying it wouldn't have happened if their party was in power as there would have been more investment in cat-toast glue research.

Therefore it is in the interests not only of public safety but also public sanity if the buttered toast on cats idea is scrapped, to be replaced by a monorail powered by cats smeared with chicken Tikka Masala floating above a rail made from white shag pile carpet.

Bunnahabhain

Me, too. :)

Ok, what is all this 9 business? :) Reminds me of inflationary vocabulary, as thought up by Victor Borga (sp?)

Anyway, if you take any word that has a number in it, raise that number by one. Thus:

"I ate my tenderloin with my fork." becomes
"I nined my elevenderloin with my fivk."

Oh well, this has nothing to do with anything ... carry on! come back Sir jOhn!

Sir JOhn, like myself, has some kind of ntl cabletv internet access. This has been very highly incompatible with Mudcat in the last few weeks. Today is the first day I have manged to get proper access to the forum for quite a little while. I think Sir JOhn has even greater problems, and has maybe given up trying.
If anyone sees him tomorrow at HUll Flok Club, please tell him I've PMed him to explain why the Boat Band is not going to be able to come to his club next month, but we will later in the year.
The cabletv theory may be wrong. It may be he is about to dismiss the government and take permanent control himself, in emulation of the King of Nepal. That is why he has not been on Mudcat, he is writing a new constitution.

Teresa,

For some time jOhn's keyboard was so fucked up that he couldn't use the return or spacebar (can't remember which). He figured out how to use the nine9 to accomplish something similar, and we just had to overlook all of the nines in the text9. Do a search on him and you'll see some of these, ending a couple of years back. Someone finally gave him a new keyboard.

Apparently you can get quite a large message on a bodhran, and even though it flies better than an accordian, you'll need to throw it hard to get out of the black hole that Hull seems to have become. That should not be a problem.

Anyone got a decent target, though? Any spare Banjo players?

While I like to pretend I visit Mudcat for erudite discussions of folk music, I have to say I have not been dropping in all that often in the last few months. Certainly not as often as I used to. And the reason is pretty clear: I used to call in to see what Sir JOhn had to say about things, because he is the funniest contributor we have, by a million miles.

Please come back, JOhn.

Sir jOhn is indeed extant and voluble, at least in electric cellulite text form. He, or his captors, sent me a text from his wander phone the other day advising me which the winning horse in the 3.50 at Donchesterfield would be, and that I should invest all the tea club money in same nag.

I'm happy to tell you that this horse, Euripedes or summat, romped home, and I'll never have to work again, so there.

Noone pretending to be Sir jOhn could be this fey, so I'm sure his excellence is alive and kicking.

My honourable frend is right, the oss i tipped was Echelon, it stormed home, and won by 4 lengths, [see race report at www.racingpost.co.uk]. I would of texted Mr Skijack my tip for the King George n Queen Elixabeth steaks, but i was skint an run out of phone credit! [it won].
anyway i texted skipack8 like he said, and tell him i reckon this orse will win, but he was in a meeting or summat, so he says, 2 can you stick a ton on for me2, i says yes, i owe him so money anyway, but paying back tomorrer, plus his winnings.

he told me one day, he likes to bet on horses, so i gave him loads of tips, [waht orse will win etc], and they all won, but he never betted on them, exept 1 called Kicking King, [and now another1], and they all one. he didnt bet becase of busy in meetings, [i not sure waht job he does, but he has to go to meetings], [i think he sells animal fat or summat, not sure really].

and reason i dont go on mudcat much now= too many moany basterds, [like shambles etc], mudcat used to be really nice and funny etc, but now i think is just moany people, [moany people and racists people etc].

The concerns of Sir jOhn are always at least amusing and worth considering. Sometimes, especially when he raises rubbish issues, Sir jOhn is spot on. His opinions are too valuable to be sequestered on the eastern side of the Herring Pond.
