Subject: alternatives to scottish national anthem From: GUEST,zoot1000 Date: 26 Jun 03 - 06:11 AM A first suggestion as an alternative to the truly awful 'Flowers of Scotland': 'Rolling home to Caledonia' - as done by the Whistlebinkies on I can't remember which record. Naturally, this is NOT the same as 'Caledonia' by Dougie McLean, which is also banned. |

Subject: RE: alternatives to scottish national anthem From: GUEST,Scabby Doug (nae cookie) Date: 26 Jun 03 - 08:43 AM The Freedom Come All Ye is a stunner of a song. Although I seem to recall Hamish Henderson being opposed to this being referred to as a Scottish national anthem, since that was contrary to the inclusive and internationalist theme of the song. I like Dougie Maclean's Caledonia, but it's not anthemic - it's gentle and reflective. Scots Wha Hae is great, but it's not positive enough - it's too anti-English How about.... "Ye canny shove yer Grannie"? |

Subject: RE: alternatives to scottish national anthem From: Willie-O Date: 26 Jun 03 - 10:46 AM I would hafta say Loch Lomond first for melody and sentiment, Rogues In A Nation second for power and attitude, everything else third. |
Subject: RE: alternatives to scottish national anthem From: Jim McLean Date: 26 Jun 03 - 11:12 AM Definitely 'A man's a man'. How many Scots understand all the words to Freedom Come-all-ye? Jim Mclean |
Subject: RE: alternatives to scottish national anthem From: GUEST,weerover Date: 26 Jun 03 - 11:47 AM Take your point Jim, but there are a few words in "Is There for Honest Poverty" (to give it its proper title) that may be unfamiliar also. wr |

Subject: RE: alternatives to scottish national anthem From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Jun 03 - 04:01 PM Dick Gaughan has a good story about this this to say on his website, about the late Norman Buchan, MP and folkie I'd post it here, but Dick is very specific in saying of everything on his site "May not be reproduced in whole or in part in any form, material or electronic, without the written permission of the author." (And even in posting that, of course, I've broken that injunction of his...) So if you are curious you'll have to click oin that. (Which is to the good, because it's a great site to get to visit.) |
