Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 Jun 04 - 07:03 AM Wow, these Beta blockers do strange things - are those my feet over there? Why are they walking over to the bar when I'm sat by the fireplace with a kitty on my lap? Ask Dead Horse about Gin IV, and incidentally, Gin I, The fellowship of the bottle, Gin II, the Two bottles and Gin III, the return of the Bottle. Eagerly awaiting Gin VI, the Juniper strikes back. Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST Date: 18 Jun 04 - 07:52 AM Burgers are on! The lobsters have beren converted into a big pot of bisque and a huge pile of lobster salad - the steamers are drowning in drawn butter... y'know? life is good! |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: JenEllen Date: 18 Jun 04 - 12:19 PM Weel, on my trip through the garden this morning, I found a CUCUMBER!! Only one, so we'll have to slice it thin and share, but there's a lot of flowers on the plant and the promise of more to come! How's about some Anasazi bean, auroch, raptor-roadkill and lobster gumbo? (Who replaced my IV bag with goofy juice?) |

Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MMario Date: 18 Jun 04 - 01:18 PM The nice thing about this tavern - we usually have fresh anything on request. And if we don't we just charge some to Bert's credit card! Oh I've wined and dined on Mulligan stew, and never wished for Turkey... |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 Jun 04 - 03:44 PM First peel two Mulligans? And who would WANT to wish for turkey - how anyone ever plucked up courage to eat anything that downright ugly I shall never know. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MMario Date: 18 Jun 04 - 03:57 PM hey! My Mulligan stew is authentically made in a converted tin can and cooked over an open fire. Wild Turkeys aren't ugly.... now the first person to eat an oyster must have REALLY been hungry. |

I'll go back to the medication and the kitty by the fire. Incidentally, Amber kitty went to the vet today. The vet looked at her clawing and scrambling around the place and asked if this was the same cat whose euthanasia was recommended 2 weeks ago..... Thank heaven I told them to wait until Limpit was back from her holiday. Limpit is now upset that we can't have a new kitten. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Jun 04 - 10:35 AM Ah, I was wondering where the recovery ward wandered off to. I've been dazedly bouncing (slowly) off walls (mostly garden walls), chomping on clonazapam (so Curmudgeon won't say "Did you take your pill?!?") and swilling Tirconnell. Let me just curl up here in the wingchair by the fire with a couple cats in my lap and one on my, uh, "shelf". (Oh, and here comes another over the back of the chair to wrap himself around my neck -- famous trained cat scarf.) Sigh. That feels good. What am I sipping? Someone once said you're never too old for cookies and milk even if it does turn into gin and tonic (or Lagavulan and lokoumi). I'm taaaaahred. Just nudge me if I doze off. (And please don't let me drool.) Then again, some of that lobster stew might be nice and comforting -- big chunks of tail and claw meat? Not just stuff picked from body? Ummmm . . . now THAT's comfort. How long can I hide here? And talking about gardens is nice, but mine's being a tyrant. Things are walking all over the place and I have to herd them back into their pens, I mean, beds. And the goat's beard needs to be moved a looooong way away from the hostas in the turnaround. Maybe turn them into a "hedge" along the side of the way back raised bed garden. Mostly everything needs to be moved somewhere else. But there I go, talking about work again. I'm just going to sit here and dunk heavily buttered rolls into my lobster stew and listen to the music on the other side of the room. Oh, and keep the cats' paws and tongues out of my stew . . . Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: MAG Date: 19 Jun 04 - 08:15 PM OK, here I am between a long work day and the monthly contra dance. Already the promise to my garden to get out one basketful of weeds a day is broken. And I excused not making it to the Y to work out because I was getting all this exercise doing outside work ... the sweet rocket is about to dump a ton of seeds, so I can add them to the swap. does anybody remember how to make those little woven baskets out of an odd number of lavender and a piece of ribbon?? You tie the ribbon (narrow type) just under the flower heads, then weave the ribbon through the bent back (and hopefully willowy) stalks, and when you are done tie it on the outside -- well, I guess I remember well enough to give it a shot.. right after the dance .. abd a couple other things. if I wait long enough the lavender will be all done and I can forget it. Anybody have a pack of kids who need a fundraiser at the local farmer's market?? Girls are more willing to do this as I recall. anybody want to sit right out here and weave a little keepsake while we hum rounds together?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Jun 04 - 04:26 PM I came in here for a natter, but to be honest, I'm just too darn tired.... stoke me up with cranberry juice and lead me to the comfy chair again please - add a kitty or two (one of mine isn't speaking to me because I was out all night last night with not one but TWO other kitties) and prod me awake when the profiteroles are served. I like mine with cold chocolate sauce please. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Geoff the Duck Date: 20 Jun 04 - 08:10 PM Hey Squeakie - I remember Gin VI - the return of the glad-eye... MMario - can you do me a plate of veliciraptor roadkill in oyster sauce, a nice garnish of stinging nettle salad with wild yoghourt dressing. For afters, lobster profiteroles and something out of a hen's arse(?) in a brandy sauce... Or alternatively - I'll have a bag of roasted nuts! Is there any more of that Belgian beer left - I could fancy a framboise at this time of the evening... Those lavender baskets sound very smart! Can I order a gross for my birthday - It's a while before it gets here. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: MAG Date: 22 Jun 04 - 12:04 AM I've got thread tangle between this and "A Quiet corner." I'm stuck in an old vaudeville routine. Made it to church yesterday. That's good. No that's bad. I had to cut out and drive 60 miles to do this park gig. that was good, only I fell asleep and missed dream group. Oh, that's bad. Actually, that was good. I had this great dream. well that was good, right? Not really. I spent the night in the recliner accidentally and woke up with a really stiff neck. That's bad. never mind. but it really has been 2 solid days of that's good, that's bad. I've got the solstice giddies, or something. and I'm ravenous. nasturtium leaf salad, anyone? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Geoff the Duck Date: 22 Jun 04 - 05:09 AM I'll have a couple of nasturtium leaves, as long as the blackfly haven't got to them first. Should go nicely with velociraptor. This chair is way too comfortable, I keep drifting off on a sea of serenity, wafting over the waves towards a moonlit tropical beach. I can see dusky maidens in the distance, and they appear to be carrying gourds full of fermented coconut milk, roast suckling pig and platters piled high with some sweet native fruit. I swim gently towards where the surf starts to break on the beach I can hear ukelele music drifting over the foam. A large wooden masted ship sails across the bay, it's sails billowing in the cool evening breeze, then the shanties start... And Liz - wasn't the fourth story "Gin IV - a new hope!" or was that Star Wars? I lose track! Quack! |

Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MMario Date: 22 Jun 04 - 10:32 AM Someone left a large container of custard in the walk-in cooler - it's labeled "For Juggling only" - it's also starting to get fuzzy. Would it be allright to toss it? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: JenEllen Date: 22 Jun 04 - 12:09 PM If it's getting that fuzzy, maybe you should ask it first? *bg* Gimme a cool spot, and fast. Nothing more miserable that a pluviophile stuck in the desert on a 100 degree day. Whine, whine, whine..... I finally got raspberries, so we'll put them in the freezer and then use them as ice cubes in our tea. |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MMario Date: 22 Jun 04 - 12:17 PM okay - now I know I'm a dirty old man - I not only read that wrong - I read it wrong TWICE --- and t-e-a doen't look ANYTHING like B-r-a-s |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Jun 04 - 12:33 PM I think you've been in the cooler a l-i-t-t-l-e too long, MMario! Or else you've been breathing the fumes from the grill and getting too much smoke. Funny how we all seem to be centered on our gardens. Why not have Geoff the Duck do a little groundwork for us--then we can each toss out some seeds or poke in some of our extra plants and see what happens. Start a nice patio garden for the Mudcat Tavern. I know I saw some ornamental grasses out around the side next to the chimney and some attractive old redwood siding. Maybe build out from there? And put in some purple martin houses and toss a couple of BT dunks in the standing pond so we can sit out there without being devoured by mosquitoes. Maybe someone will take Bert's card over to the local hardware store to pick up one of those interesting open-on-four-sides awning things to put out in the middle? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MMario Date: 22 Jun 04 - 12:56 PM might as well go all out - I like the 'Regency' gazebo. Anyone else? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Jun 04 - 02:44 PM That would work--if someone would incorporate lots of flower boxes along the rails and leaves lots of room for the garden. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: JenEllen Date: 22 Jun 04 - 02:45 PM Oh, the Regency is lovely, just get it stained instead of painted. White wood is going to show all the fingerprints and jello-splatters for sure. For your B-R-A-S, you have to do like my Nana taught us. You crumble a little of MAG's lavender into ice cube trays, fill the trays with water and freeze. They make great 'tracing' cubes and aren't nearly as messy to get out of your bra as berries. (This is also from the woman who told me "put a dot of vanilla behind each ear and you'll smell like a cookie all day". *g*) |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Amos Date: 22 Jun 04 - 04:58 PM "put a dot of vanilla behind each ear and you'll smell like a cookie all day" LOL!! Somehow that seems a lot more appealing to the gals, I reckon. The danglers just never spend anytime figgerin' on how to smell like a cookie!! :>) A |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Jun 04 - 05:36 PM It also repels mosquitoes. :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MAG from public lab Date: 22 Jun 04 - 06:23 PM By the way Kat, what is the recipe for an Amaretto sour? I've got a bottle of the stuff that's been sitting in my cabinet for, oh, I guess it's 7 years. Might as well know how to serve it up to guests in the summer heat. Would it go over vanilla ice cream? lavendar ice cubes. I just love finding new ways to use lavendar. and the new tempurpedic mattress (see mattress thread) was worth the wait. and no, there's no way I'm making a gross of those little lavendar baskets. I am not a crafty person. Handwork drives me right around the bend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Geoff the Duck Date: 22 Jun 04 - 07:10 PM I expect the juggling custard is mine - whatever you do, don't toss it unless you know how to catch it. It's a bit like a boomerang, You never know where it will end up! For those who don't believe, I'll produce photos some day. As for being fuzzy - I never quite worked out the rules for "Fuzzy Duck" - if there really are any. I'll pass on the Groundwork, I came here to chill... anyway you need a pig to do a really good job of rotovating. Just bury a few peanuts at random spots in the garden. If you are lucky they might unearth a few truffles to go with the lobster!!! That Regency Gazebo is smart. A notch up from the one at the Yorkshire Gathering. Anyway - I must get back to my tropical island if the bloody pirates will shut up singing "Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum..." or at least put some Shrub in it and pass it round. Quack! |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Jun 04 - 11:36 PM Okay, Geoff, there should be someone around the Mudcat Tavern with the time to go poke some nuts. . . |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: katlaughing Date: 23 Jun 04 - 12:29 AM Sorry, MAG, I've been out/in and about too much and missed your request. The only way I've ever known to make amaretto sours is just to pour your pleasure over some "rocks", then add a bit of sour mix...it's really to taste, and then sip. I don't think the sour would go well with vanilla ice cream, but the amaretto might, esp. with some apricots! I've got a newly decorated bathroom this week, new sink, new paint, new cabinet...it's loverly!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 Jun 04 - 03:26 AM Will the new Regency Gazebo have a fully plumbed toilet as the Yorkshire Gathering 'Gazover' (pun on gazunder, nickname for a jerry po, potty or chinaware)? I really liked sitting in a field, on porcelain, piddling, whilst watching the birds and waving at the neighbours. Not sure how they felt about it though. Please make sure there a goodly supply of large leaves, without spines or stings, available though! We got new bedroom curtains to block the early morning sun (Manitas objected for some reason, I don't know, 5.00am is a lovely time of day), so now the room looks gloomy and red. Ah well...... At least they go with the paintwork. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Geoff the Duck Date: 23 Jun 04 - 08:30 AM And your eyes... ;+} Quack! |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Jun 04 - 10:32 AM Rather than put the throne right there in the gazebo, why not landscape an area off to the side with somewhat taller shrubs that you can see over while sitting? It won't exactly be a gazebo-ette; I guess we could shorten it and call it a gazette. And it goes without saying that a gazette provides a non-ending supply of paper for the use you have in mind. |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: MAG Date: 23 Jun 04 - 10:35 AM I agree with you, Liz, that 5:00 in the a.m. is a lovely time of day. and my remaining kitty reminds me that in the a.m. is kitty breakfast time. I was actually up around then today; it seems the only time I can spend tidying my Bless-this-mess house and getting in my quota of one-bushel-a-day of weeds and prunings. It's quiet, except for the birds. It's cool and nice. the auto sprinklers have run, and the garden glistens. The birds seem to think it's a bird shower or water park. I deliberatly have my bedroom on the east side so I can't oversleep (doesn't work in winter). My front yard is all wildflowers; grass is boring. and sneezy. My friend Nancy can't get over what she calls my all-pink house. (No Nancy; the carpet is ash rose; the paint job is mauve ...) I was inspired by a little picture book called *The Big Orange Splotch* by Daniel Pinkwater. If I'm gonna be chained to the place then by golly, by gum, I'm gonna have fun doing what I want with it. One of my favorite SF writers once said, "It's foolish to give up what you loved as a child." Well, playing in the dirt and mud is right up there. Has anybody else read a psychological thriller titles *Sophie?* Book discussion group, right over here... in this nook with trailing datura plants ... yes, they say if you inhale deeply enough, ... Kat reopened the Tavern as a respite from the increasingly hostile political threads. How lovely to relax with a congenial bunch who share one's interests! |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: GUEST,MMario Date: 23 Jun 04 - 10:42 AM well - as long as we are landscaping for the gazober and gazette - can we pipe in a hot spring and rig a waterfall and soaking pool somewhere? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Jun 04 - 08:20 PM Absolutely! And think of it, during winter meetings, getting out in the hot water and watching all of the steam rise around you? |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Geoff the Duck Date: 24 Jun 04 - 04:30 AM I've called in a friend who keeps pigs to help with the vegetable patch digging. Should be arriving any time now... |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Geoff the Duck Date: 24 Jun 04 - 04:39 AM Outside, the sound of a large beast shambling round the yard, breaks the quiet of the Tavern. There are honks and squeals as it goes about its' business. Duck saunters over to the window, opens the pane and leans out. "You're doing a good job there!". He watches for a few minutes whilst the animal smell drifts in through the window. Eventually he pulls a large embossed gold pocket watch from his pocket, looks at it and calls through the window, "Okay - you've probably got enough nuts buried, You can go and fetch the pigs!". |

Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: JenEllen Date: 24 Jun 04 - 02:29 PM A huge glass or *refresh*-ing SunTea for Micca and Mortee. (after explaining what it was to our Micca, he tells me "Bloody hell, Cookie, we don't get enough sun here to brew the stuff...") So here's a couple of glasses of the brown vile stuff, and you get sent on your way to the Tea Bar. I recommend adding the candied ginger to a glass, it's yummy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Respite Tavern - Revisited From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Jun 04 - 12:23 AM Wow! The pig did a superb job of digging the turf out there. Just don't try to walk across it--"Wait! That looks like Liz tottering back from the loo! OHMYGOSH she's into the mud! . . ." |
