Subject: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Oct 11 - 03:54 PM I don't normally get the Times, but there was a free one when I bought Private Eye from WH Smiths today - and in a rather over-strained "funny" page about how English Rugby fans are supposed to be switching their allegiance to Wales now that England has been knocked out of the Rugby World Cup, there's a "phonetic version of Land of my Fathers", which might be quite useful. Here it is - (and here is a you tube rendering with the original words for a singalong, and a translation...) My hen laid a haddock on top of a tree Glad farts and centurions throw dogs in the sea I could stew a hare here, and brandish Don's flan. Don's ruddy bog's blocked up with sand. Dad! Dad! Why don't you oil Aunty Glad? When whores appear on beer bottle pies, Oh butter the hens as they fly. Dad! Dad! Why don't you oil Aunty Glad? When whores appear on beer bottle pies, Oh butter the hens as they fly. Once more with feeling! |

Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: Snuffy Date: 18 Oct 11 - 08:31 AM I have just discovered lurking on my PC a Word document dated October 2000 with these words alongside the original Welsh ones and the footnote "credited to Swansea poet Nigel Jenkins". Does anyone know of him? The English version I am familiar with goes: Whales, whales,I have also heard a version which runs something like: Hail, hail. |

Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: Bert Date: 03 Feb 14 - 09:08 PM OK, now how about some Welsh twat stepping up to the plate and giving us the correct phonetic pronunciation. Also a translation would be nice. |

Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 04 Feb 14 - 04:38 AM LOL... The best parody-phonetic version of that song I ever heard was from a Welshman. Years ago (no, make that decades) when I first moved to London from the States, I asked him to teach me the native words, simply because I loved it so much. You should have heard what he came up with! (And no, I'm not going to post them here. More than my life's worth.) I do think Wales got it right when it comes to national anthems. I've always felt that America's should be America The Beautiful, which has a much better melody and is easier to sing. I also like its sentiments, a simple celebration of natural beauty rather than rockets & bombs. "Sweet Enola Gay, son! We've got a war tomorrow…" - Colonel Leslie "Hap" Hapablap |
Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: Bert Date: 04 Feb 14 - 06:20 AM Peter, The English and Welsh have been joshing one another for years, Bryn's comment was meant in fun and so was mine. |
Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Feb 14 - 06:51 AM No need to ask for a 'phonetic' version. The language is phonetic (if you know the letters). The extended alphabet (including dipthongs & accents) are enough to read the Welsh straight from the page. O, and the pronunciation of the letter 'y' (a vowel) depends on where it is in the word, being either 'u' (as in hut) or 'i' (as in hit). |

A mucked-up Haymes or Barney Whale, Leg gone in Gale, come boys for sale Le gunners spake a lot of cobb-lers So live coming, Ow Ron, Navyyyy |

Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Feb 14 - 10:36 AM But if you must have a phonetic version, then this is something like it. (Welsh speakers may disagree, especially 'Gogs') Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi, My hen lard vern had eye un an oil ee me. Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri; goo-lard byre th(as in 'this') a chan (hard 'ch' as in Bach) tor eon en wog eon o vree Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad, eye goo rol ruv ell weer goo lard gar weer tra marred Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed. Dross ruth id coll* a sant eye goo-eyed (Cytgan – Chorus) Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad. Goo-lard, goo-lard, plied-ee-ol oyv (as in oy vey) eem goo-lard Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau, tra ('a' rhymes with 'bar') more un veer ee beer hof buy O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau. Awe buth (th as in 'this') ed eer hen-ee-eye-th (th as in 'pith') bar-HI! *ll this is the tricky one. Put the tongue to the roof of the mouth, exhale over the top of the tongue while making the 'l' sound (and moving tongue to the back of the lower teeth) |
Subject: RE: Welsh Anthem, phonetic English version From: GUEST,John Foxen Date: 04 Feb 14 - 10:51 AM Thanks for that Nigel. Now can anyone come up with decent phonetic versions of the Breton and Cornish anthems which use the same tune? |
