Subject: RE: everybodys talkin From: Mark Cohen Date: 13 Feb 02 - 09:46 PM Just to give credit where credit is due, the song was written by the late Fred Neil, though it was done in the movie by Harry Nilsson, apparently because of some contract problems. Lyrics here (can't vouch for those chords), and a fascinating short biography of Fred Neil here, from Rolling Stone. I never knew that the "Pooneil" of "Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil" and "The House at Pooneil Corner" was Fred Neil. I loved his stuff back in the late 60's, especially The Dolphins. An underappreciated talent, in my opinion. Aloha, Mark |

I don't hear a word they're saying, Only the echoes of my mind. People stopping staring, I can't see their faces, Only the shadows of their eyes. I'm going where the sun keeps shining Thru' the pouring rain, Going where the weather suits my clothes, Backing off of the North East wind, Sailing on summer breeze And skipping over the ocean like a stone. Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: Mark Cohen Date: 13 Oct 03 - 04:21 PM Click here for words and chords. It's written in F, but you can transpose it up one step: F --> G C --> D Gm --> Am Bb --> C Welcome to the Mudcat, ployboy. This tends to be more of a "folk" rather than a "pop" discussion group, but some might say that this song by the late Fred Neil is becoming a folk song! Too bad they picked Harry Nilsson to sing the song on the sound track of "Midnight Cowboy" instead of Fred. Aloha, Mark PS In case anybody's looking for a good trivia question, "Midnight Cowboy" is the only X-rated movie to win the Oscar for best picture! It was in the early days of the rating system, before the X rating was co-opted by porno films. Aren't you glad you know that? |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: John Hardly Date: 14 Oct 03 - 03:30 PM I posted this quirkier way of playing it before (for some reason I can't pull it up with a search). This just made an airier sounding guitar part. {X00770} Every- {X00670} -body's {X00770} talking {X00670} at me {X00770} (I) {X00670} can't hear the {XX0570} words they're {X00770}saying {022030} They're only {002030} echo- {002020} -es of my {X00770}mind {X00670} {X22030} I'm going where the {002020} sun keeps shining {X00232} Through the pouring {X00212} rain {201212} {X22030} Going where the {002020}weather Suits my {X00770} clothes {X00670}{X00770}{X00670} {022030} Backing on to the {002020} North East winds {X00232} Sailing on a summer {X00212} breeze {201212} {022030} Skipping all over the {002020} oceans like a {X00770} storm {X00670}{X00770}{X00670} etc. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: John Hardly Date: 15 Oct 03 - 12:36 AM Numbers are where the strings are fretted. X is not played (or muted). 0 is open. 320003 = G 332010 = C X00232 = D 002220 = A 022100 = E and so on. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: M.Ted Date: 15 Oct 03 - 11:15 AM Thanks for posting that, John--it gives the real Fred Neill sound-- When it comes to the bridge, instead of the Em thing that you do, I do this: X-0-0-4-3-3 (I' goin where the ) then slide it up two frets: X-0-0-6-5-5 (Sun keeps shinin') X-0-0-7-7-5 (through the pourin') X-0-0-5-7-5(rain) Also, and just to be difficult, I think that at the beginning the X-0-0-7-7-0 to X-0- 0-6-7-0 thing repeats only twice, and the third time, it is : X-0-0-6-7-0 to ( I ) X-0-0-4-7-0 once and then: (don't hear a) X-0-0-4-7-0 to (word they're) X-0-0-5-7-0(saying)-- This, at least, from the Fred Neill version. The "Hollywood" version, by Nilsson, is in E, but it seems likely that the guitar was in D capoed at the second fret, with an orchestra pasted over it. After years of reading Tommy Tedesco's Guitar Player Magazine column decribing how he did things in Hollywood studio sessions, I wouldn't be surprised if he had played it on a Tiple that had been tuned up--Speaking of retuning, for you forgot to mention that that the E string can be dropped to D and played through the whole thing-- |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: John Hardly Date: 15 Oct 03 - 11:40 AM that sounds great M Ted! I actually had similarly re-done the first part much as you changed it (this was on old arrangement that I cut and pasted without rechecking it) so I concur with your observation. I'll try your bridge with the G instead of Em. The one thing I find missing in so many people's playng of it is a diminshed7 in the chorus -- "in the pourin' rain" |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: M.Ted Date: 15 Oct 03 - 04:24 PM JohnHardly-I wonder if it took old Fred as long to write it t as it has taken me to figure it out;-) I played it in A for the longest time--for some reason the Jazz charts for this tune used to be in A--and, as per Dr. Mark's comment about Pop vs. Folk, it is a Fred Neill song, and he always was a folkie in my book-- |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Everybody's Talking From: John Hardly Date: 15 Oct 03 - 04:44 PM :^) You know, I grew up with the pop version (I'm a bit younger than most "folk"). At one point somebody turned me on to Neill, but with the warning "his voice is an acquired taste". Man, not for me. I loved his voice -- and anything of his that others did, I found his version more compelling (I suppose that's as it should be, eh?). |
