I'm looking for the magazine Talking Union, edited by Schniderman. In the Mudcat database, it is credited as the source for MAKIN' WHOOPEE (UNION VERSION). There is no indication of a date or address. I'd like to know the author of the union words. I plan to perform the song SUN20MAY2001, and want to give credit where credit is due.

Thanks to all who responded. I live in the Boston, MA area. The nearest repository that has a good run of the magazine "Talking Union" is the Performing Arts branch of the New York Public Library. I sent an inquiry to them. What I'm now most interested in is the apparent lyricist, Glenn Plummer. Teldir.com lists eleven people in the US by that name, with snail mail addresses. I haven't bothered them. Does anybody know the Glenn Plummer in question? Or anything about him?

Well, a Google Search (click) shows that there's an actor named Glenn Plummer.

I just sent an e-mail to the Labor Heritage Foundation, whose Website attributed the song to Plummer. Let's see if they reply. I looked around the LHF Website and found lots of interesting names and information. One member of their Board of Directors is Saul Schniderman, former editor of Talking Union.

Glenn Plummer is now retired but he used to work for the United Food and Commercial Workers, for many years out of Pittsburgh. He also used to write a number of labor songs and parodies, including "Into a Union".

Tom Juravich recorded Glenn's song "Breaker Boy" on Out of Darkness, which is available from us.

I don't have an email address for Glenn, but his snail mail address is 43 MEADOW DR, GREENBURG, PA 15601 and his phone number is 724-837-0213. I haven't talked with him for a couple of years, but I assume the information is still good. And I also assume that he'd love to hear from anybody interested in the song.

Saul Schniderman is the Secretary of the Labor Heritage Foundation. For many years he edited Talking Union. We do have a complete collection in our archives. Saul works at the Library of Congress and is the President of his AFSCME local and of Council 26 here in Washington, DC.

If you are interested in labor music and culture, I encourage you to attend our annual Great Labor Arts Exchange which will be held June 17-19 in Silver Spring, MD. That's where I met Glenn and Saul many years ago.

Hi Tony. May I suggest that you contact The George Meany Center located HERE . This is the home page of their website. Or you can just email your inquiry to [e-mail] and they are usually very helpful. My guess is that they will be able to direct you to the right spot. Another resource might be The Labor Heritage Foundation, located at 815 16th Street NW, Room 301, Washington DC 20006. I am sure they will have a handle on how to reach Glenn Plummer. I can tell you this much about Glenn. He is a member, or was, of the UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) International Union. That is the same International I belong to. He has written a number of parodies such as No More Concessions (set to the tune of So Long, It's Been Good to Know You) and The Right To Work Lie (set to the tune of Wabash Cannonball). Other very good authors of labor parody songs would include Julie McCall and Paul McKenna. The Labor Heritage Society publishes a book called "Labor Song Parodies" of which I have a copy. I also have several AFL-CIO labor books, and several Little Red Songbooks. If you are looking for specific songs, I would be happy to copy them and mail them or scan/email.

I just got off the phone with Peter Jones at The Labor Heritage Foundation. What a wonderful surprise I got. For those of you who are fans of Irish music, no doubt you have heard of the song "Kilkelly"? This is a song that was based on a packet of letters that were found by a young man in his parents attic. He then wrote a song based on those letters. The lyrics are in the DT HERE. The young man who wrote these lyrics is the same Peter Jones that works for The Labor Heritage Foundation and posted the information above. I spoke with him at length. I like this man, he touches both of my musical passions. Thanks for the help, Peter.

Again, THANK YOU to all who responded to my call for help. Peter Jones and Big Mick were specifically helpful about Glenn Plummer. I'm going to start another thread, asking for help in finding songs relevant to contingent workers (that term covers part-time, seasonal, temps, leased employees, independent contractors, interns, co-op students, people who do home-based work...you get the idea).

What a great vehicle Mudcat is!
