Right from jump street, I'll confess that the title for this thread was inspired by the title of another Mudcat thread which I just noticed today "Lyr Req: Hot Buttered Rum" thread.cfm?threadid=1209&messages=39
and by the title of the now classic 1969 album by Issac Hayes Hot Buttered Soul.

This thread has multiple purposes:

1. It's a discussion thread:

Topic-What is "soul" music to you?

2. It's a category thread:

a} What songs can you think of which have the word "soul" in their title and/or include the word "soul" in their lyrics?

b} Name some examples of soul music that you like.

**

I'll add some comments and list some songs in my next posts to this thread.

Join in if you wanna.

Thanks in advance for posting to this thread.

Here's the wikipedia definition of Soul Music:

"Soul music is a music genre that combines rhythm and blues and gospel music, originating in the United States. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, soul is "music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying."

There's more here.

**

My definition of soul music: Soul music is music that speaks to, soothes, and inspires the soul. Soul music may be soley instrumental, or it might include vocals. It's not the tune or words but how they are played and sung. As far as I'm concerned, soul music can secular or religious, but true soul music must be spiritual, in the deepest sense of that word.

In that sense, one facet of soul music for me are many of the examples posted in this Mudcat thread: thread.cfm?threadid=105855 "Religious Songs That Speak To You"

But, that's only one facet of what I consider soul music. Here's an example from the secular category of songs:

As to songs that include the word "soul", there's "Sweet Soul Music"

SWEET SOUL MUSIC

Do you like good music?
Ha! That sweet soul music,
just as long as it's swinging.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

We're out there on the floor, y'all,
goin' to a go-go,
dancin' with the music.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Spotlight on Lou Rawls, y'all.
Oh, don't he look boss, y'all.
Singin' 'Love's a Hurtin' Thing', y'all.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Spotlight on Sam and Dave, y'all.
Oh, don't they look great, y'all.
Singin' 'Hold on, I'm Coming'.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Spotlight on Wilson Pickett now,
that wicked wicked Pickett
singin' Mustang Sally'.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Spotlight on Otis Redding now
singin' 'fa fa fa fa fa fa
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa'.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Spotlight on James Brown, y'all.
He's the king of them all, y'all.
He's the king of them all, y'all.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Do you like good music?
Ha! That sweet soul music,
just as long as it's swinging.
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

I got to get the feeling...

A fabulus soulful singer bustin' out and pouring his heart to give tribute to some of the greatest MUSICIANS of that day and there have been fewer with this kind of heart. Subject: Lyr Add: SOUL MAN (Sam and Dave)
From: Azizi
Date: 08 Dec 07 - 07:13 AM

If folk music means "not having any known composer", then studio recordings of soul music aren't "folk music".

But if folk music means music that folk embrace because it comes from and expresses their very essence, then studio recordings of soul music are folk music.

In my opinion, certain examples of recorded soul music-and for that matter examples of any genre of music-are invaluable folkloric artifacts in that they reflect and document the values, attitudes, concerns, and aspirations of folk.

"Soul Man" is one important example of a song that reflects and documents the {re}emergence of the Black pride movement in the USA.

SOUL MAN
{Artist: Sam and Dave}

Intro: / G - F - Bb - C D /

Coming to you on a dusty road
Good loving, I got a truck load
And when you get it, you got something
Don't worry, 'cause I'm coming

/ G G7 G G7 / / / /

{Refrain}
I'm a soul man, I'm a soul man
I'm a soul man, I'm a soul man

/ G - F - G - G7 G / G - F - G - C D /

Got what I got the hard way
And I make it better, each and every day
So honey, said don't you fret
'Cause you ain't seen nothing yet

{Refrain}

I was brought up on a side street
I learned how to love before I could eat
I was educated at Woodstock
When I start loving, whoa I can't stop

{Refrain}

Just grab the rope and I'll pull you in
Give you hope and be your only boyfriend
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Here's an excerpt of the Wikipedia article on Sam and Dave and the song "Soul Man":

"Samuel David Moore (b. October 12, 1935, Miami, Florida), David Prater (b. May 9, 1937, Ocilla, Georgia,- d. April 9, 1988 Sycamore, Georgia), are American Soul and Rhythm & Blues (R&B) singers who were members of the soul vocal duo Sam & Dave. They recorded and performed together from 1961 through 1981; Sam Moore was the tenor (higher) vocalist and Dave Prater was the baritone/tenor (lower) vocalist...

Sam & Dave enjoyed significant commercial success as recording artists and performers from the mid to late 1960s, including 10 consecutive Top 20 Billboard R&B singles from 1966 to 1968 and 14 R &B chart appearances overall, and 16 appearances on the Billboard US Pop music charts overall. Their streak of consecutive top 20 songs outperformed James Brown, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and all other R&B artists except for Aretha Franklin from 1966-1968. They had the #1 Billboard R&B single for the year for 1966 - "Hold On, I'm Comin'", and the #2 R&B single for the year in 1967 with "Soul Man". Both "Soul Man"(1967) and "Hold On, I'm Comin'" (1966)also reached the number 1 position as R&B singles during the year they were released, and they had Pop crossover hits with Soul Man (#2 Pop, #1 Cashbox), "I Thank You"(#9 Pop), and "Hold On, I'm Comin'"(#21 Pop). "Soul Man" was on the R&B charts for a remarkable 18 weeks(longer than ANY other #1 R&B song from 1966-1969)and spent an equally remarkable 7 weeks at #1, and was ranked the #13 most successful R&B hit of the entire 1960's by Joel Whitburn's "Top R&B/Hip Hop Singles Guide". Both "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin" have been voted on greatest song lists in Rolling Stone Magazine,[4] and "Soul Man" was voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which was established to honor truly timeless recordings. "Soul Man" was also named in 2007 as one of the "500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Soul Man" was also honored by the RIAA as one of the "Songs of the Century" for the 20th Century. The Album "Hold On, I'm Comin" reached the #1 position during its 19 weeks on the Billboard R&B charts in 1966, and was an RIAA certified Gold album"...

Hi, Mo!

Thanks for posting to this thread. I'm sure that I wouldn't know a lot of the songs that you do. Mudcat's a great place to learn about lots of music, isn't it.

But you know, now that I think of it, "Hot Buttered Sole" woulda been a great title for a thread on the subject of "What kind of sea foods do you like?"

Shucks, that didn't occur to me. Instead I decided to focus-in admittedly "Shot Gun"* fashion-on songs that are labeled "soul music". I also thought that this thread could include a listing of songs from other genres that have the word "soul" in their title and their lyrics.

So this thread is only a play on words in that it riffs off that "Hot Buttered Rum" thread title.

* "Shot Gun" is another play on words for those who know R&B/Soul music. And for those who don't, Mudcat is a great place to learn about this genre of "folk" music.

From: Azizi

There's a number of songs that aren't considered "soul music" that have the title & lyrics "Heart & Soul".

The song I associate with that title is this Jan & Dean song:

HEART & SOUL
{Jan & Dean}

Bom ba bom, bom ba dip, da dip, dip da
da, da, da, dun, dun, da dingity ding, da ding.
Bom ba bom, bom ba dip, da dip, dip da
da, da, da, dun, dun, da dingity dong, da dong.

Heart and soul, I fell in love with you,
Heart and soul, the way a fool would do,
Madly...
Because you held me tight,
And stole a kiss in the ni-ight...

Heart and soul, I begged to be adored(ooooh ooh),
Lost control, and tumbled overboard(ooooh oooh ooh),
Gladly...
That magic night we kissed,
There in the moon mist.

Oh! but your lips were thrilling, much too thrilling,
Never before were mine so strangely willing.

Uh huh, but now I see, what one embrace can do,
Look at me, it's got me loving you,
Madly...
That little kiss you stole,
Held all my heart and soul.

Bom ba bom, bom ba dip, da dip,dip da
da, da, da, dun, dun, da ding, da ding, da dong.
Bom ba bom, bom ba dip,da dip,dip da
bom, ba ba bom, bom, dip, da dip, da dip.

(Instrumental)

Oh! but your lips were thrilling, much too thrilling,
Never before were mine so strangely willing.

Yeah, but now I see, what one embrace can do,
Look at me, it's got me loving you,
Madly...
That little kiss you stole,
Held all my heart and soul.

Thing is, I have always thought that like Soul Food, whcih does not usually include sole, that Soul Music had nothing to do with formalized definitions of soul found in metaphyzzickle tracts or religiouns, but was entirely about a combination of bass, rhythm, voice and style that stirs the heart and soul in a particular way. I think of it (rightly or wrongly) as being a cousin to Motown and a granddaughter of Bessie and Blind Lemon, and perhaps the Favorite Neice of Aunt Doowop.

For some reason, I think of things as disparate as Aretha Franklin and "Jeremiah Was a Bull Frog", "Just About Midnight", and "My Girl".

Go figger -- I yam just a white boy lost in the blues.

But I know what I like.

Folk music doesn't actually 'mean' the first of those things and the second 'meaning' is so vague that it means anything you want it to mean - but, hey, why not just make it up as you go along!

Btw, Amos, I like you post.

And btw2, I think all of God's children got soul.

However, I think that some people-regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religious orientation etc etc etc-express it more than others...

Of course, folks may have different opinions on what express means and what it means. Not to mention what different folks mean by the word soul...

I could go on, but I don't wanna.

LOL, Amos!

As soon as I pressed the submit button, I saw that I had left out the letter "r" in the first sentence of my last post.

I could have subconsciously meant to write "I like you. Post".

But actually I meant to write "I like your post".

I particularly like this part of it [soul music is] a cousin to Motown and a granddaughter of Bessie and Blind Lemon, and perhaps the Favorite Neice of Aunt Doowop.

Of course, Amos, I do like you in a sista-brotha-friend kinda way.

Thanks for making me smile,

Ugh, I never liked that Diana Ross & The Supremes' song.

I hope that you post some info on Northern Soul. But please don't take my lack of immediate response as disinterest. I gotta ease on down the road for a while, but I'll be back atcha as soon as I can.

Carry on-soul to soul-and all that jazz-or not as the case may be.

i love soul.... hi-energy funk , sweat drippin' ballads. as an early teenager I went from C&W right into Soul... Ray Charles had already crossed into Country, snagged more than a few white-asses, and opened up a whole new world to me. Before that, I had a lone Fats Domino LP along with Hank, Buck, Johhny, The Carters etc.. So it was really Fats and Ray that pointed me toward the 'soul train'..After attending some live shows in the big city... that was it.... it was time to groove... James Brown, The Godfather, what an animal.. make your pants want to get up and dance..

There was a CD released a few years ago, I believe it was called 'Rythm and Country'.... some fine duets featuring folks like Sam Moore, Gladys Knight, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt... can't remember the rest.... but it was a good idea, something that took far too long to get here...

Subject: Lyr Add: PEOPLE GET READY (The Impressions)
From: Amos
Date: 08 Dec 07 - 02:44 PM

1965 -- the Impressions

People get ready, there's a train comin'
You don't need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin'
You don't need no ticket you just thank the lord

People get ready, there's a train to Jordan
Picking up passengers coast to coast
Faith is the key, open the doors and board them
There's hope for all among those loved the most
There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner whom would hurt all
mankind
Just to save his own
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
For there is no hiding place against the kingdoms throne

People get ready there's a train comin'
You don't need no baggage, just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin'
You don't need no ticket, just thank the lord.

And then DIonne Warwick jumps in and belts out:

What the world needs now
What the world needs now
Is love, sweet love
It's the only thing
That there's just too little of
What the world needs now
Is love, sweet love,
No not just for some
But for everyone.

Lord, we don't need
Another mountain,
There are mountains
And hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans
And rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last
Till the end of time.

What the world needs now
Is love, sweet love
It's the only thing
That there's just too little of
What the world needs now
Is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some
But for everyone.
