Subject: The French get Obamatized From: Songwronger Date: 21 May 12 - 10:27 PM Americans elected Obama expecting a departure from the spirit of fascism that's gripping the country. But Obama has given us MORE fascism--more repressive laws, more shady deals with the big banks, less transparency in government, more warfare. Obama duped the country. And the poor French just booted the fascist nutcase Sarkozy and elected the "socialist" Francois Hollande, but now Hollande's doing an Obama. The World Socialist Web Site's not too happy about the situation: Incoming French president signals budget cuts, handouts to banks After winning the French presidential election on Sunday, the Socialist Party's (PS) François Hollande is already positioning himself to drop his limited election promises on social spending and attack the working class with deep budget cuts. Hollande's victory reflected a broad popular rejection of incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy's austerity policies and his unpopular imperialist wars. However, any hopes for change from the incoming government will be rapidly disappointed by Hollande, who is moving to carry out reactionary policies. ... http://www.wsws.org/articles/2012/may2012/fran-m09.shtml |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: Little Hawk Date: 22 May 12 - 11:06 AM Interesting. It seems that elections in the western world are now nothing more than theatre to briefly pacify a helpless and frustrated public by giving them the false impression that they have a "choice"...when in fact, they do not, because no matter who they vote in, they still get more war, privatization, cuts in public services, and bank bailouts to the rich crooks who are orchestrating the show from above and beyond the electoral process. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: Little Hawk Date: 22 May 12 - 11:14 AM Along the same line, remember when the people in the UK got Blaired? Same basic deal. They got the opposite of what they thought they were going to get. This is what happens when a great financial oligarchy takes over the political system. Your vote becomes virtually meaningless. Heads they win...tails you lose. If you oppose it in the streets, you get called nasty names, get fined, and get arrested. The day may come when you get shot, but we're not there yet. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: GUEST,CS Date: 22 May 12 - 12:16 PM That's why I don't vote, I don't subscribe to the sham of 'democracy' we have. It's a vote for "Who do you want to tell you what to do?" I'd rather have some form of anarchy break out. I don't imagine a hideous distopia of 'the system' collapsed, I think local people would gather together in town halls and churches, and talk sensibly about how best to exchange resources and skills. That's the grounding for a proper society, not this blind top heavy monster we're currently feeding. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: Bill D Date: 22 May 12 - 12:32 PM "I'd rather have some form of anarchy break out. " Gee... I hope you are standing out in the open when it does. It sure is easier to wave your arms and condemn the entire system and assume that any politician who manages to GET elected is corrupt... than to work to make it better, hmmmm? That's called abrogation of responsibility. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: GUEST,CS Date: 22 May 12 - 12:38 PM Umm, no it isn't. That's what YOU choose to call it. I'm not agitating for anarchy, I'm just enduring a system I see as fundamentally flawed. Fortunately not voting isn't a crime in the UK, but if it were I would see choosing not to vote as an entirely ethical individual choice to civil disobedience. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: dick greenhaus Date: 22 May 12 - 01:31 PM THe system we have now is the system that the bulk of our citizens seem to want. Not a fertile ground for revolution. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: GUEST,CS Date: 22 May 12 - 01:44 PM I don't know if I believe in revolution really. Most of the one's we've seen seem to involve power hungry beasts ultimately oppressing the masses once again. Now, disintegration, I could go with. The fall of the Roman Empire. Big unwieldly power structures collapsing underneath their own weight, isn't something that horrifies me. As said, I don't see a hideous dystopia in my village if 'the system' were to self destruct (as I think it must inevitably do) rather the seeds of a more sensible and sustainable 'people based' society. No doubt we'd all have to abandon our wide screen TV's for a hoe, but if the alternative is planetary suicide, I can deal with that. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: Bill D Date: 22 May 12 - 01:57 PM Oh, well...in the UK. The title suggested relevance to Obama. I have little idea what the deeper issues are in the UK. I DO know that the USA could use some modernization of the details in national elections. We really need to abandon the Electoral College and allow direct voting for the president. Sadly, that requires an amendment to the constitution, and it is unlikely to be approved by conservative states who LIKE their ability to block progress in favor of narrow 'states rights' positions. Remember, Al Gore got more votes than GW Bush in 2000. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: GUEST,CS Date: 22 May 12 - 02:08 PM Rapapree, as said, unlike many revolutionaries, I'm not too sure I'm in favour of revoltion. As said, I see disintegration of the current system as a (hopefully) inevitable, and welcome, event. Agitating for change isn't probably too useful when confronting the hugeness of the beast, especially when what you end up replacing it with is another just like it. Small scale, local and sustainable collectives, is the way forward. At the mo' I'm learning to grow vegetables and herbs. Who knows, maybe one day those skills will be of value to my neighbours as well as to me. I don't really have a militant agenda as I think it unrealistic in present circumstances, merely a positively nihilistic form of hope for humanity post the err apocalypse let's say! |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: akenaton Date: 22 May 12 - 02:43 PM I agree with most of what you've written CS. We need to think small....I remember a "subsistence economy" in my youth, we were financially poor, but rich in many other ways. "poverty" had its compensations. |

Subject: RE: BS: The French get Obamatized From: Rapparee Date: 22 May 12 - 02:47 PM Come the Revolution I'm shooting at BOTH sides. "Gotta a new boss, just like the Old Boss." The Left is just as prone as The Right to despotism. |

"poverty" had its compensations." Indeed. Retrospectively, I realise that being raised poor in a rich culture, was a blessing. It taught me how to value small things: what you could imagine for yourself, what you could make for yourself, what you could do for yourself. In line with current cultural values of "own more, be better" most kids today are being taught the exact opposite. It's the quiet equivalent of severing hands and feet. |
