I've been combing the folk song sections of my local music stores, but can't seem to find a recording of this song. Some of you may recognize it by the "Somebody shouted McIntyre" and I'm not sure if the song appears under any other name. Anyone have an idea where I could find a recording of this?

Years ago a Irishman living in Montreal named Brendan Nolan used to sing this in the Old Dublin, and I think he recorded it. I think he is now living in Florida and may have something out so maybe you can search under his name in the bins. He had a lovely voice and a great sense of humour and I hope he kept at singing.

He wrote a wonderful parady of "City of New Orleans" called "The Train They Call The Ocean", which I possess on a 45, making fun of the notoriously slow and ancient train that used to make its way from Montreal to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Finally found my tape of "Dun Cow" sung by Brendan Nolan. It's on his Southern Sunset. Last I heard he was living in FL. By the looks of the traffic I thought everyone was.

Just happened across another recording of The Old Dun Cow. This ones by Lou Killen from his "Sea Chanteys" CD.

Just seeing if I had the CD player hooked up right and tis was the CD I popped in.

BAZ sent me a tape recently of this old fellow (Arthur Howard) singing country songs, a capella, and on it was a song related to the Old Dun Cow called "Old Jepson Brown" that has a chorus with a similar tune that starts " There was Brown, upsidedown..." but has no mention of pub or fire. The jist of this song is that the man, always a clown, jests his way into a girl's heart, proposes and gets married standing on his head, and (of course) when their bonny bouncing boy is born, the first thing young Brown does is stand on his head.
The songs are obviously related. I wonder which came first? Howard was born in 1902, and his parents sang him the song as a child.

I first saw Zebra Dun in print when I was a kid, and have seen hither hide nor hair of the noun "Dun" since then. I see that it is in the DT. What does it mean?

I'm not sure if there are other meanings, but "dun" is a color - sort of a brownish -grayish - yellowish shade found in some breeds of cattle and horses.

I often sing this song. i dont know what part of the world you come from but in Sussex (South Coast of England) it goes down well in pub singaround sessions.

I ought to start a thread ...this is an example of a song I like, but which I seldom hear done well....it requires a certain 'feel' for the vernacular.... and delicacy in the pacing and delivery...otherwise it can sound like those drunken louts 'in' the song were just bellowing it! If that is what you want, ok...but if you want to make it a hit...practice it and think about it...(#1...don't make it choppy and like a metronome...#2...don't rush it..milk those lines.*grin*)

Bill D - I sing this frequently and (I flatter myself, perhaps) do milk all the relevant lines. Next outing may be at Upton, if you're there.

There is another verse, written by Pete Twitchett, late of SunFolk in South London:

I heard (but have no documentary evidence) that when The Old Dun Cow burned down, as described, it was replaced by another pub - called The Dun Cow. Perhaps that's the one that's there now. Is there a Man of Old Kent (or Old Kentish Man?) who can enlighten us?
