Subject: RE: BS: When is St.Patricks day? Skarpi Iceland. From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Feb 04 - 06:02 PM St Patrick's Day is always March 17th, the same way Christmas is always December 25th. Whatever day of the week they may happen to fall on. It means each year is a little different from the last year. However in an imperfect world people sometimes cheat by having St Patrick's Day celebrations on some adjoining weekend day. A deplorable habit. Of course the trouble is that outside Ireland it isn't a public holiday - I feel that part of celebrating it should involve taking the day off, if it's a workday. First things first. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St.Patricks day? Skarpi Iceland. From: The O'Meara Date: 27 Feb 04 - 07:24 PM McGrath; St. Patricks day is the biggest non-holiday celebration on earth. But in Boston, the clever Irish community made the 18th of March a holiday. Good thinking! O'Meara |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St.Patricks day? Skarpi Iceland. From: InOBU Date: 28 Feb 04 - 10:56 AM Scarp! At my gig on the 17th, we will dedicate a song to you all celibrating in Iceland! Cheers Larry |

Subject: RE: BS: When is St.Patricks day? Skarpi Iceland. From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Feb 04 - 05:42 PM Iceland is supposed to have been one of the places St Brendan the Navigator visited on his voyages. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St.Patricks day? Skarpi Iceland. From: GUEST,JTT Date: 28 Feb 04 - 11:41 PM Not to mention Maelduin. Skarpi, how do Icelanders feel about the Greenpeace action getting people to pledge that they *would* visit Iceland after whaling is stopped? |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: GUEST,An English Patriot Date: 29 Feb 04 - 11:01 AM Never mind St Patrick's Day, watch out for April 23rd, which falls on a friday. That means you have all weekend to nurse your hangover. April 23rd is, of course, St George's Day. Drink to England! |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: GUEST,Willy McBoyne Date: 29 Feb 04 - 11:03 AM "But in Boston, the clever Irish..." Surely an oxymoron. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Peace Date: 29 Feb 04 - 03:16 PM And April 23 is also Shakespeare's b'day and d'day (generally accepted). |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: GUEST,JTT Date: 29 Feb 04 - 03:20 PM I think it's only an oxymoron if you insert *Northern* before the second noun, wee Willy. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: skarpi Date: 29 Feb 04 - 06:15 PM Halló all , about whaling and Greenpeace , are you ready to " if we stop kill the whaling process " to pay the price of our economy , that is we live on fish and selling fish and the whales eat all the fish that we are trying to fish up from the see and so on . If we loose all the fish into a whales mouth our economy will fall and all Icelanders will be in deep ..... you know. Well this is what many people here think . What do I feel about the killing well in old days we did need the foot but now I wonder.... I would love to see many people from all over the world to come and see the whales please be Welcome to Iceland. I think that the people who run the fishing of the whales will stop this very soon. All the best Skarpi Iceland. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: GUEST,JTT Date: 03 Mar 04 - 02:55 PM Do whales eat fish? I thought most of them ate plankton? Oh, I'd love to go to Iceland |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 04 Mar 04 - 05:20 AM And April 23 is the International Book Day (Shakespeare born and dead, Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra dead). It is also German Beer Day. On April 23, 1516 the Purity law was enacted by a Bavarian duke (only water, malt and hops to be used). It still is the oldest food law of the world. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Bobjack Date: 04 Mar 04 - 05:27 AM St. George's day 23rd April. I bet it doesn't get it's own threads like March 17th. My office wall chart highlights St. Patrick's day, but not St.George. Bloody disgrace! |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 04 Mar 04 - 05:29 AM Just reviewed the text of the Purity Law. It is dated expressively dated "am Georgitag" = on St George's day. Isn't it fine how all good things are joined on this sympathic Saint's day? Books, Beer, Boy scouts, and Being English. |

Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Blackcatter Date: 04 Mar 04 - 11:19 PM Greetings Skarpi Hope all is well. Sending you greetings from sunny Florida (today it hit 82 deg.F). Like InOBU, we'll sing a a song in your honor (and all of Iceland). I still am meaning to get back to Iceland one of these days. I still miss it a lot. I wish I could get ahold of a bottle of Black Death again. Haven't had some for a few years now. Oh well . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Blackcatter Date: 04 Mar 04 - 11:43 PM So, Anyone know where I could buy a bottle of Brennivin (Black Death)? I've looked briefly on the Net but can you legally buy liquor over the Net? HELP! |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Blackcatter Date: 04 Mar 04 - 11:50 PM Here's a website, but I can't seem to get past the main page (yet there's several "quotes" on it if you hit refresh. http://www.brennivin.com |
Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 05 Mar 04 - 03:02 AM There is an Icelandic store in the net, baut alas - they're only offering t-shirts wit the brennivin logo. By the way, Black Death istn't the translation of brennivn, but seems to be the same as Brandy. Since it is made from potatoes, brennivin could be transferred from Wine to any other dangerous alcoholic concoction. Wilfried |

Subject: RE: BS: When is St. Patrick's day? Skarpi Iceland. From: Blackcatter Date: 05 Mar 04 - 10:33 AM Yes, Black Death isn't a direct translation of Brennivin, but the tradition, if I remember correctly is that it's informally called that because some Icelanders claimed it was what kept the entire island to avoid concracting the Black Death back in the middle ages. And Brennivin is a dry schnapps or aquivit that is made from potatoes and flavored with caraway seeds. It's an aquired taste (don't ask me how I aquired it). |
