Subject: Young Tradition on CD From: GUEST,redmax Date: 24 Oct 07 - 05:24 AM In the Alex Campbell thread there was some discussion about the availability of the Young Tradition albums on CD. As far as I know there were two CDs released by Castle/Essential as part of their Transatlantic reissues set. The first (ESMCD 409)contained the first, self-titled LP and So Cheerfully Round. The second (ESMCD 461) contained Galleries, plus all the tracks from the Chicken on a Raft EP and some (but not all) of the tracks from Royston & Heather's album No Relation. The Fledgling label released their Christmas-themed collaboration with Shirley Collins The Holly Bears the Crown (FLED 3006). I imagine the latter is still available. I don't know about the chances of reissues, but for what it's worth around the time of the Young Tradition CDs Castle/Essential also released the Mr Fox albums on CD. They've since reissued these in an improved package. One of the big shortcomings of the original reissues was the combining of two LPs on one CD, missing out tracks if the running time was too long, and NOT acknowledging these omissions. If they were mastered from vinyl that's news to me, but apparently this practise is more common than you'd think. Hope this helps |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 07 - 05:46 AM Sanctuary (including Castle) website Castle is now part of the Sanctuary group. Above is the link to their website. I cannot find the YT stuff there. If I am wrong many will appreciate a link. YT stuff appears to be available from the Heater Wood associated site, also linked to on the other thread, but I do not know if it is from the original tapes or remastered from vinyl - and indeed I have not bought any recently so I do not know if it is in fact actually available. |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: gnomad Date: 24 Oct 07 - 07:52 AM Sleeve notes on the two Castle CDs mentioned don't seem to give info re mastering. I don't think they sound like vinyl re-recorded, but don't have the finest of hearing myself. As to contents of the CDs, I don't have the vinyl to compare with, but at 22 tracks totaling 72 minutes I can't think that a huge amount was dropped on the Young Tradition/So Cheerfully Round disc, but would be interested to know what is missing. The Galleries/Chicken on a Raft/No Relation disc weighs in at 78 minutes, 30 tracks. I suspect that the No Relation part took a bit of a pruning, but would again be interested to know. Out of interest I looked the discs up on Amazon UK; both are available used, and someone is asking £131.84 for the second disc. Well I like them OK, but not that much; maybe I should be selling! |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 24 Oct 07 - 08:13 AM I have The Young Tradition and the So Cheerfully Round LPs. Timings given on So Cheerfully Round are: Side One Daddy Fox (3.12) The Season Round (4.02) The Bold Dragoon (2.18) Watercress-O (3.08) The Old Miser (3.50) The Foxhunt (1.40) Side Two Knight William (4.39) The Single Man's Warning (2.36) The Pretty Ploughboy (5.25) The Hungry Child (3.48) The Whitsuntide Carol (2.15) Timings aren't given on The Young Tradition but tracks are: Byker Hill The Bold Fisherman Betsy The Serving Maid Henry The Poacher The Lyke Wake Dirge The Banks of Claudy The Innocent Hare Dives and Lazarus Derry Down Fair The Truth Sent From Above Pretty Nancy Of Yarmouth |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: GUEST,redmax Date: 24 Oct 07 - 08:25 AM I'm almost certain nothing got trimmed off any of the YT albums (especially as the first pair were quite short even by LP standards), it's only No Relation that got trimmed. The missing songs were The Cellar Door, Lovin' Bessie and Chaconne in G Minor. The Cellar Door is a sad loss, a John Clare poem set to music, excellent stuff. The best approach would surely have been to have added the Chicken on a Raft songs to the YT/So Cheerfully Round pairing (they'd probably have fitted) and to have Galleries and No Relation uncut on the second release. But that would have required someone at the CD label actually giving a shit. |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: The Borchester Echo Date: 24 Oct 07 - 08:27 AM Times given on the Castle Communications CD (ESM CD 409) which incorporates both LPs: Byker Hill (1:55) The Bold Fisherman (4:25) Betsy The Serving Maid (3:07) Henry The Poacher (4:38) The Lyke Wake Dirge (2:45) The Banks of Claudy (2:46) The Innocent Hare (2:45) Dives and Lazarus (5:53) Derry Down Fair (2:53) The Truth Sent From Above (1:45) Pretty Nancy Of Yarmouth (1:42) |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 07 - 12:40 PM ESM CD 409 is not on the UK or US Sacntuary sites. I think that CD must ahve been deleted unless anyone else cna find it. My US sourced CD has the number CMACD 538 |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: GUEST,The Ballad of The Bold Researcher Date: 24 Oct 07 - 01:22 PM this might help Young Tradition on CD I hope the link is good.... |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 07 - 02:06 PM Link good - no obvious connection to current Castle catalogue - who are the other "Young Tradition" mentioned? Is it time for Heather Wood to get a contingency lawyer? |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: GUEST Date: 24 Oct 07 - 02:45 PM Those Young Tradition "twofers" appear to have been released on Castle records originally and The Holly Bears The Crown is available on Fledg'ling Records The Holly Bears The Crown FLED 3006 Also Young Tradition did two Peel Sessions, to be found here Young Tradition Peel Sessions and that OTHER Young Tradition....?I have nooooooo idea..I wonder about the legalities here. |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: The Borchester Echo Date: 24 Oct 07 - 02:59 PM Who would have thought, way back then, that we'd be talking about YT recordings like they were gold dust? Their farewell concert in C# House in 1969 was a hoot. They had to give up singing as a trio to get jobs and make some money. They reformed especially in about 1974 to do a benefit for Clive Woolf at Hampstead Town Hall and get him a concertina. I'm sure Royston and Peter are rolling around rock'n'roll heaven at the idiocy of it all. |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 07 - 04:02 PM What's idiotic? They were wonderful (at least, on the recordings I have got) |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 07 - 04:04 PM Bum, went to buy those Peel sessions and just tracklists, now downoads, no CDs - fruits of tantalus! |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: The Borchester Echo Date: 24 Oct 07 - 04:07 PM What's idiotic is that they made sod all out of it and had to give up performing and do real jobs. Yet now people are prepared to pay silly money for their recordings. . |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 07 - 04:12 PM Surely the shortage arises out of the problems over Performers' Protection Act consents, or has that been solved? |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: GUEST,redmax Date: 24 Oct 07 - 04:37 PM Sadly Peter Bellamy used to be reduced to selling home-dubbed cassettes at gigs because most of his recordings were unavailable. Now thanks to Fellside some of his old LPs are getting reissued properly. I think it's a labour of love for Paul Adams, more power to his elbow! I don't think "Tell it like it was" will be seeing the light of day any time soon, unfortunately. |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Jack Blandiver Date: 25 Oct 07 - 04:33 AM We live in hope that one day we'll see a comprehensive re-issue of the entire Bellamy back-catalogue, & meanwhile must be glad for those small & gracious mercies - such as stumbling cross the vinyl originals in the most unexpected of places, & revering them like the treasures they most surely are. Recently I borrowed The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate (Topic, 1969) and was moved to make a wee 'visual presentation' by uniting the title track with the graphics that inspired it. I've mentioned this before, but I think it's especially relevant in this context. Have a look at: The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate Also I put a couple of my own attempts at singing songs from the Bellamy / Kipling canon up on YouTube in the hope this would inspire some uploading of footage of the great man himself, but nothing thus far... Someone out there - surely?? |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: GUEST,The Ballad of The Bold Researcher Date: 25 Oct 07 - 12:17 PM "Peel sessions and just tracklists" there are enough tracks to warrant a CD,IMHO, and what with the BBC releasing other sessions, we can live in hope. Diane may know if there's any film footage of Young Tradition hanging about anywhere. |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Heather Wood Date: 25 Oct 07 - 10:14 PM Hi friends and gentlebeings, Yes, Castle did reissue the YT vinyl and yes, they did cut No Relation. Also yes they are currently out of print (out of press? what's the correct nomenclature here?). Castle occasionally reissues a YT track on other compilations. Fascinated by the John Peel listings - as I am sure would Chris Hogwood be (last I heard, he was head of the Boston Handel & Haydn Society) - he was the drummer (sorry, percussionist) on Galleries and never uttered a note!. David Munrow's Early Music Consort (David, Chris, Roddy and Adam Skeaping) were great fun to work with. Said it was the first session they'd ever done where they didn't have to wear suits. Heather |
Subject: RE: Young Tradition on CD From: Jack Blandiver Date: 26 Oct 07 - 04:00 PM I never got round to buying the Galleries CD; still spinning my vinyl copy of 'Revisted', though needless to say the vintage patina of Stones in My Passway is barely noticeable these days... Anymore YT memories you'd like to share with us, Heather? |
