I hope you hear back from the doctor, Bobert. It's time you got some relief from pain.

Well, okay, I diod hear from the doctor late yesterday... He looked at the MRI and the only thing he could tell me was there wasn't any evidence of any major herniated disc so I asked:

"Well, doc, why do I have 24/7 pain and tingling down my arm and in fingers???" to which he replied:

"I don't have all the tools to read the MRI..."

Huh??? What, does he need metric set of sockets, 'er what???

The P-Vine Googled the kid up and apparently he ain't been doc'in too long so next week (ahhhh, yes, yet another week) we're going to make an appontment with a real doctor, Dr. Chin, at UVA who has been 'round the block a few times...

Meanwhile, "The Ghia" should be on ebay by now... I ain't checked it out but it's a '63 and is white if anyone is interested...

Fer cryin' out loud Bobert...Send that CD up my way..I work for the Radiology department at one of our local hospitals and I'll have one of OUR docs look at the damned thing. :-)

BTW, when I had my MRI done I has the results back in 2 days...not a week (of course, being a transcriptionist I was able to look up my own report that same day...). Sounds like this kid is useless.

I had the damned CD burned and put into my file while I was standing there talking to the Tech. That was Wednesday. It was to be seen by a radiologist on Friday, the results sent to my boner by Monday afternoon so he could be ready for my Wednesday (8:45 a.m.) appointment.

Bobert ol' buddy, I think someone is yankin' you around. Get thee up to that UVA place and get it done right the first time.

Bobert, you forgot the "smear" the license tag on one of the photos.

One of the back views. Do the photoshop touchup and save it in the same place and the same name and it won't upset your web page on eBay.

Well, I didn't do the actual listing... A friend did it... I really don't care about the license not being smeared... But thanks fir postin' a link, SRS...

Yeah, Rap... I'm gonna get my boney butt to UVA this week... I had the MRI done this past Tuesday and they said the longest it would take would be a week to read so I'll have the results no later than Tuesday...

If not, then I'll send 'um to you, Becca... Right now the kid has 'um and it's a 2 hour drive up0 there to get 'um from him and as mad as the P-Vine is right now she'd prolly whup his butt if she were to see him so...

...fir now it's hurry up and wait...

Rap, it's a standard transmission and your clutch foot/leg is bumbed out right now. How would you drive it home? Use your cane to poke the pedal with every up and down shift? Or mash the gears and coast into Pocatello in neutral?

I drive a 5-speed manual all the time. In fact, both cars are stick. It hurts a bit to use the clutch, so I just don't stop and then I don't have to shift.

Mah Gawd, Sorch... You go, girl... I didn't know that any womenz knew how to shift without the clutch... I'm impressed... Sho nuff am...

Reminds me of drivin' up to the ol' MCI center to hear Dyaln and the Band back in the 70's and came out, cranked up my '66 Bug an' the clutch cable gave way... Gad to wait until everyone had left and then started the car in 1st gear and syncro shifted from the MCI Center back to Richmond, Va... Richmond was a little tricky but it was 'bout 3:00 in the mornin' when I got there and I planned my route very carefully so as to not catch many red lights and only ran two ot three of 'um before makin' it home... Fun night... The tickets were in nose bleed section and all that second hand cannibus made the drive home a little more fun...

When I was typing my reply I couldn't think of the word (synchro--how is that for a senior moment?). I have also resorted to that maneuver in my many years of standard transmissions. Trouble is that now most of the newer vehciles don't come with a standard nearly as robust as what the automatic can do. I have an 8 year old truck (Chevy Silverado) and when I was shopping I tried for another standard. The only one they had on the lot was a stripped down ugly monster and had no power and too many rough edges in the shifter. Maybe if I ever reach a stage where this one driver can afford to own more than one vehicle (and justify it to myself) then I'll find a car with a good standard.

Hey, Bobert...I had a VW bus a few years ago, and the Getaway used to be held in Prince William Park, 20 miles south of DC just off I95. As I was leaving there, MY clutch cable broke, and I drove that beast up 95 and around the beltway in moderate traffic! Such fun! When I had to stop,I'd coast to the breakdown lane and wait for a clear spot again. That was only the 2nd time in 35 years I'd tried to syncro-shift.

Seriously, I had a 60 bus... It was a panel version with barn doors on both sides... Even with a 60 hp engine it I had to draft big trucks to hold 65 mph...

True story:

When I was living in Ohio, a motorist reported to the Ohio State Patrol that there was a dead black bear on a certain state highway. Well, EVERYONE knew there were no black bears in Ohio, so the guy was laughed off.

Very, very annoyed he drove back, loaded the dead bear in his pickup, drove back to the OSP station and dumped the carcass in the parking lot. He then went in and told the cops and then went home.

The cops called the Fish & Game people, who assured them that it was, indeed, a dead black bear. F&G, however, did not remove dead animals.... It was July...and it took three days to find someone who would remove the dead bear from the copshop lot.

When I was much younger I was a van driver one summer for Curry's teh UK electrical retailer. I had to take a Bedford CF from Gravesend to Bromley. About 2 miles on my way the clutch stopped disengaging, so I happily carried on with clutchless changes - until I got to a set of road works. Single file traffic, lights went red, nowhere to go. Uphill. No chance the starter motor would get the van moving uphill in first, and not enough width to turn round and too much traffic to start in reverse and back down.

Nice summer day, phoned the maintenance people, sat on grass verge in sun (watching girls in summer dresses) until maintenance arrived and got paid for it!

Having driven standard vehicles...but never having had a clutch cable break or a clutch fail...I'm not quite sure what all this is about making clutchless gear changes. Can someone explain it?

Basically, you can shift without the clutch when the car reaches a certain rpm. This varies by car so you have to work at it.

You want to watch your RPMs and pay attention when you pass through neutral.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Seriously Messed Up....
From: Bobert
Date: 17 Mar 08 - 07:41 PM

Okay, here is how this is accomplised... There is this magic rpm range where the gear you are in and the gear you want to shift up to have good karma... Each car is different but if you kinda keep a little force on the gear shift in the direction of the next gear when that magic spot comes into play the shifter will effortlessly and smoothy go into the next gear but it's alot like making love to a gorilla.... Yer gonna have to do it on the gorilla's terms...

That's what I mean by that magic spot... On a VW I can do it without thinking... Even when the clutch is fine I frequently synco shift it anyway...

It's a lot like letting the force be with you...

Not too technical but accurate...

B~

Cool! I understand the principle. It would just take some familiarization with the particular car to get to know where those spots were.

As fir a medical update: Health care in the US of A is great as long as you are super rich... Unfortunately, that ain't me...

The MRI came back in record time (6 days) and it says that I have some degenative stuff that probablu 25% of folks my age also have... No herniated discs...

So I ask the nurse who has called to report that what I do next to find where the pain and tingling ios coming from and she said, "Ahhhh, Bobz, I don't know..." so I says to her, "Have the real doc call me and he did this evenin' and that was like a joke...

"Ahhhh, Bobz, the report says yer fine"???

"No, doc... I ain't fine... I ain't been fine in pushin' 3 months now... That's why I come to you folks, ain't it"

I had to plead with the guy to send my MRI and records off to UVA where on Wednesday I'm gonna call and try to get an appointment with a Nurosergoen... Heck, I might have to plead with him, too...

Does Dick Cheney go thru this stuff???

Nevermind...

All I know is that I've been paying close to $1000 a month for health insurance for years and years, have barely used it and now it seems that the great US health care system couldn't give rat's ass if I'm in pain 24/7 or not... Oh sure they are perfectly willing to shove painkillers in me but fix the problem???

Nevermind...

I'm just a tad steamed tonight... Gig season is upon me and I can't even pick up a friggin' geetar...

B:(

Sounds pretty typical to me, Bobert. Doctors are quite often, it seems, at a loss in being able to tell you exactly why something like that is happening...or what can be done about it...but they can give you some drugs so you won't feel the pain for awhile.

The pain is your body telling you that something is wrong.

Now all this tells me is that doctors are...like the rest of us humans...neither omniscient nor omnipotent. But I knew that already.

Have you tried acupuncture yet?
