My girlfriend used to have a lot of patients come to her with that.

Don't smoke - that's the big one.

Cut down drastically on alcohol, tea, coffee, cola drinks, sugar and aspartame-based sweeteners..

Bob, I posted something quite a while back when I suspected IBS. Try Dicyclomine. It worked for me.

Hey, where's the fun in that?

Hey, Bobert, I'm in that club too, though kind of just barely.    Glad you don't have an ulcer.
Hope playin' and singin' the blues helps with that there stress reduction.

I've had occasional nasty pains that my Dr said were probably IBS. The leaflet that she gave me listed various probable causes - one was drinking cordial & I'd just started having Schweppes lime cordial or Barley Water in my usual water (my normal drink as I don't drink alcohol & don't like tea or coffee)

So I stopped drinking the cordial & had no more pains (mind over matter???)

Last Fri I asked barman for my usual Soda water with lemon (meaning a slice of lemon) - he said he had no lemon & would lime do (meaning cordial) & I didn't realise till I started drinking this very sweet drink (did I mention I don't like sweet stuff?) so I watered it down with a glass of tap water.

I'd totally forgotten about the IRB & cordials until I started getting nasty pains the next day.

Coincidence or not I'll make sure i don't have cordial again.

According to most of what I have read on various internet sites abouty IBS, alcohol isn't a major factor... Stress is... Fiber in the diet is the best way to treat it...

Seein' as playin' blues is relaxing to me I'm sure it is also a good treatment...

Bobert,
I have had IBS for the past 35 years. It is caused by stress.

Avoid all grease and heavily spiced foods.

Have your Doctor prescribe Librax. It was given to me many years ago by a Gastroenterologist and it has worked for me ever since. Whenever I experience severe attacks, I take 2 capsules in the morning and 2 capsules again before bedtime. The symptoms will subside within a week. The generic name for this drug is Clindinium Chlordiazepoxide.

You probably don't want to drastically ramp up the fibre level in the diet, though slowly increasing it would be an idea. You need a mix of soluble fibre (as in fruit) and insoluble (as in grain).

Probiotics (live yogurt) might help. So might supplementary digestive enzymes like bromelain, and betaine hydrochloride (ups the level of hydrochloric acid in the stomach) - the idea is that if your stomach does its thing properly, there will be less half-digested food to irritate your intestine.

Chlordiazepoxide is a seriously addictive drug. Maybe okay as a one-off for acute episodes but not something you'd want to take day after day.

Those Haymarket rioters had it right! Going back to the eight hour day -- or less -- has helped many in the past.
And Aspartame gets an unwarranted bad rap, from causing stuttering to being the reason the salmon disappeared. Personally I think them are quite bogus.

The best to you.
Feel better.

Aspartame is harmless to most people but bad news for a minority, and if you've got IBS there's a fair chance you'll be in that minority.

If you know an old person with urinary incontinence, try taking it out of their diet. Watch the results after a few days.

Unfortunately the makers of aspartame have some really helpful allies - the people who make the most noise in opposition to it. Utter raving loonies. The highest profile is Betty Martini. "Fit to be tied" doesn't come near it for her.

Makes me ratty and gives me headaches. No big deal but I don't want that.

I know from personal experience what Aspartame can do. I spent about three years trying to find out why I had permanent tiredness, dizzy spells and blurred vision, as well as some really strange turns which were similar to pre-frontal lobe epilepsy. Myriad tests by the doctor found no reason. By chance I read an article on sweeteners and there, under Aspartame, were all the symptoms that had dogged me for so long. Then I started reading labels.

It is amazing how much of this stuff is in what we buy. Even some of the vitamin and mineral 'berries' that I took daily had this in them. Stopped taking any Aspartame, symptoms disappeared. If I take the stuff in by accident I get the symptoms back.

When I was younger and at different times in life, sometimes had sensitivity to eggs and/or bacon and ham.

I had about a half year of chronic IBS following several long courses of antibiotics, which caused systemic yeast infection. I needed a detox, so I cut all caffeine, sugar, white flour and dairy (except skim milk) for about a month or 2 and the IBS went mostly away.

Diet was mainly bananas, grape nuts cereal, baked potatoes (plain) and baked chicken, green beans, mustard greens (plain or with splash of white cider vinegar).

Stress is a big factor. Try to reduce it, because it affects the entire body negatively.

That aspartame gave me instant mind crushing headache. Couldn't even have a breath mint without crippling headache.

Aspartame (Nutrasweet) is vile. I read somewhere that it is a by-product from something like chemical warfare. I never touch it, and if I do accidentally I know a few hours later. I thought I had irritable bowel and then tried stopping the diet coke and such with nutrasweet and it cleared right up.

Well, gol danged... Gotta a blues song goin' about gettin' outta Virginny... And I got aspertane, whatever the heck that is??? No, me and Marion Barry don't do no aspertane, ya hear??? I mean, none...

Yeah, certain folks do better with this or that but from what I've read on the ten thousand web sites is that the key is to reduce stress and eat more fiber... Aigs 'n ham no matter... Beer don't matter... Spicy foods don't matter... Lack of fiber is bad, bad, bad... Stress is bad, bad, bad...

Think I'll just get stoned... Maybe that's what gave me the IBS??? I was seein' what life was like without a little puff on the side... Maybe IBS is God's way of tellin' me that that little experiement failed... I donno...

(((hugs))) back, Eb... Come to the Getaway an' I'll give you a real one!!!

Well then, Bobert, ya need more fiber, ya say. Now, fiber comes in all sorts of styles: Musinex and raisin bran and bran muffins and stuff.

But fiber is also found in more things in nature. Stuff like plants and veggies and wood.

I ain't suggestin' that you start eatin' broccoli or boxwood or birch. Nossir! Another place you kin find fiber is in rope. And good rope is made outa hemp. And you know what else comes from hemp?

See?

Hey, a gy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do, right???

As fir fiber, I about o.d.'d on the stuff yesterday... Was cuttin' down a big ilantis (paradise) tree and had it notched right an' all and, well, the sumabich decided to fall the wrong way!!! Yikes!!! So I left the Stihl and ran toward a loust tree and got behind it just in time for the paradise tree to crash down all around that locust tree with me safe behind it.... Heck of a mess... That fiber ain't all it's cracked up tp be...

Plus, now I gotta go cut it up in an area that ain't tractor assessable which sucks...

Leenia,

Worried??? Not today but if when we go to court and the judge says "Dismissed" then the neighbor will prolly turn this holler into a living hell for everyone... I'm gonna be sure that the commonwealth's attorney fully understands that anything less than a judge's order that the shooting stops forever is not satisfactory...

As fir his target practicing??? He couldn't care less about the target... His target is to terrorize everyone back in this holler and he hit that target with regularity for way too long... Guess if I hadn't sworn out a criminal complaint than this holler would still be his one man war zone...

Bobert, the stress from the gunfire could easily cause your medical condition to flare up (you didn't think of that, did you?). So if he does get off, IMMEDIATELY have a lawyer sue the shit out of him for cause intentional distress that aggravates your IBS. Ask for an order restraining him from using weapons anywhere near your property (not just firearms, but bows and arrows, throwing knives, using a slingshot or a bb gun, whatever) until the civil case is settles.

"Your honor, my poor client is so stressed by this clod's gunfire that every time he hears a loud bang he shits his pants. Already this month he has lost over 800 hours of work and has spent an untold amount of money on doctor's bills -- money, I will point out, that this Son of Virginia, who was born and bred in these sacred hills, who was educated at one of our finest Academies, who has worked with deserving poor of Our Fair State, who now is trying to help restore Our Fair City to the prominence it deserves -- can ill afford. My client has no brief against the responsible ownership and use of weapons. He himself owns firearms, but he knows how to use them responsibly. He merely comes here to ask that this goddammsumbitch go shoot someplace where my client is unaffected, and he also prays the court for the costs of the medical care, attorney's fees and for several pairs of new pants."

Thanks, Rapaire. bobert, keep in mind that the worry in all this could be behind the IBS. I don't know what to advise, but keeping the connection in mind may lead to an answer of some kind.

Keep in mind that in your county, you are Somebody. A land owner, a long-term resident, a businessman. Your neighbor is either a lunatic survivalist or white trash. Try to think and act like the guy with the power.

Do you know for sure who's doing the shooting? Does the Dad go to work and later do his teenagers have a few beers and start shooting the place up? Could be a factor.

Oh yeah, leenia... I know exactly who the shooter is... I started a tread on it which went well over a hundred posts... I actually used his real name in them and was advised that keeping the thtread open might harm my chances of a conviction... This loonie has since been arrested after I went to the commonwealth's attorney and swore out a criminal complaint...

And, yeah, the guy is a loonie... I don't know about white trash but definately a loonie if the highest order...

And I have given some thought to a civil suit seein' as the IBS corresponds closely with the heaviest nights of shootings... Some night he would fire over three hundred live rounds of ammunition at a so-called back stop... Unfortunately our farm is right behind his so-called backstop and the local deputies had talked with him several times about me reporting stray bullets flyin' thry trees just overhead...
