Well, it's official now. Geeta and I are expecting a baby at the end of April (April 22, 2007, to be precise). We had an early ultrasound which looked good, and we heard the Goober's heartbeat for the first time last week. Geeta has had a fairly easy time of it, as these things go - no morning sickness, but she has been tired a lot.

Who knows? Maybe I'll be the father of a third generation folkie! (Or maybe not - which is fine, too.)

We'll see folks at the Getaway!

Dan Schatz

You know, I was sitting here kind of moping over the shit going on in my life right now, struggling to find my muse cause the music is going a bit dry on me, hating the weight I have put on,...... just generally being a whiney old bastard. Then this thread pops up, I hold my breath and open it ..... and yep, it is just what I thought it would be. Two of my very favorite people of all time are having a baby. I just couldn't be happier, and you have pulled me right out of the dumps. Just remember, ole Uncle Mick gets to change a diaper, kiss them puddin' cheeks, and generally spoil the heck out of the baby. I don't want any crap from MMario, or any of the rest of these layabouts, I will be the official Mudcat Uncle of this one. I am willing to stand in line behind Grandma Nancy, and Uncle Ken, but that is it.

I just couldn't be happier for you two. This child will be special. Congratulations, my young friends.

All the best,

Mick

A baby? A real baby? No one of them phony-baloney Betsy-Wetsy things, but a real baby that has to be changed, cries at 2 a.m., gets colicy, and will eventually need a very expensive college education?

Congratulations (really!) to both of you.

*Grin* I think Grandma-to-be is grinning in part because she can finally talk about this with all her folkie friends.

Goober's just a temporary name - although in the early ultrasound s/he REALLY did look like a peanut - so much so that the hospital felt obliged to print out an arrow labeled "BABY" on the picture they gave us.

And, yes, Mick - absolutely you get to be Uncle Mick, with full diaper changing privileges. Honestly, you can change as many diapers as you like. I mean it! And you're making us cry, you sentimental folkie, you.

The greatest of Congratulations to you! I remember when a friend told me after they had their first baby that 'it's like falling in love all over again.'

Speaking of changing diapers, before my daughter was delivered of their twins my son in law assured us that he would be very active in the children's lives but "I draw the line at diapers. My stomach wouldn't take it."

End of story: Long before they left the hospital he was changing diapers on those little bottoms like an old hand.

As to who gets to be favorite Mudcat Aunt or Uncle, just remember, while you passed Max's little one around among you, she cried and fussed until she found herself nestled warm and comfy in my ample bosom. 'Nuf said.

Back off, o' ye of ample bosom!! I am the resident Mudkin here, and will be the favorite. You, of course, may get in line, but only when I am done powdering, diapering, spoilin' (but not ruinin'), lovin', kissin', and such to my fill. And when the time is right, I intend to teach the child necessary skills such as finding frogs, spittin', and getting dirty. These are important skills for a growing child to make their way. But I'll tell you what. We can all share in teaching the child a bunch of songs.

Mick

What wonderful news! Congratulations to you both and, Nancy, I can tell you, from experience, that you are in for the best time in the world. Grandbabies are the greatest!

I have some honorary grandchildren in the UK who call me Nanny Jacqui. Can I carry on the tradition here please?

I just knew this was going to happen! The way you two look at each other and all. There is nothing more blessed than a wanted child, and man, what a life this one will have!
Enjoy every second my friends, they grow up too soon. I loved every minute of my little girls even though they are now grown ups whose company I delight in. The three of them are almost a match for me.

Okay, Mick. I know one about a king of England and another about Popeye the Sailor and another about Christopher Columbus and can I tell stories, too? Like the one about the poor man whose car broke down and the farmer said, "Sure, but you'll have to sleep...."?

Bill, do you really remember Ken and me playing QUIETLY together? That must have been a long time ago indeed! (Or very very recently.)

Thank you to you all. Please don't fight too much over the baby. I know some new parents are shy about letting other people touch/hold/love their Precious Offspring, but I don't think that will be us. There's plenty of love and diapers to go around. I feel blessed that this one will have Uncle Mick and Nanny Jacqui and Kendall and Mary and Karen and many others to watch over her/him at Getaways and elsewhen. Having been a child of the mob myself at these events, I firmly believe in it for our Goober.

And for those who would threaten our friends with nursing homes (merely on the basis of being their kids and having obviously inherited the sense of humor) - just remember the law of karma....

Just before the concert the 'Catters hear a row,
They say, "It's heavy metal, I hear the discord now!"
Only then they turn around and whadda think they sees?
It's only Uncle Big Mick, changin' Goober's pees.

I gotta stop this....

You get no precedence, no mercy, big man. You already have an advantage just because you can knit the kid a Martin guitar or some damn thing!! But Uncle Mick can teach the kid some great stuff too. Like how to play Uilleann pipes. This discipline has the added bonus of keeping down the rodent population in a humane way, they can't take the frequencies. And it really comes in handy when the inevitable younger sibs come along, cause it drives them off too.

You get no precedence, wee woman. I knew you were playing that "kindly Nannie" thing when you posted it. Dan and Geeta are such sweeties that they can't see your true intent. But you ain't foolin' me, I know that beneath that gorgeous exterior and beautiful smile lies a babyhogger. But it ain't a gonna work. Ole Uncle Mick got his dibs in first. Same goes for you as for she of the ample bosom. You get this wee child after ole Uncle Mick is done diapering, powdering, cooing, snuggling, playing, and generally making this one know how special s/he is.

mwhaaaaaaaaa.

Seems to me the song fits in quite well for the Happy Endings Workshop I'm doing with Joe...

Oh and Jacqui I remember the last Getaway those two fought over a baby... some of its actually recorded he he he...

I propose that they begin the attention this Getaway spoiling mother and babe. I bet they could figure out some way to compete for most attentive future uncle, flowers, lullabyes, hot tea....

(Sorry Geeta)

When an odor wafts by, the 'Catters have a rule
To cry out their loudest, "Hey Mick! We've got a stool!"
But another custom, of more delight that these
Is watching Uncle Big Mick, changin' Goober's pees.

********

I think this song has lasted almost long enough
The baby's interestin', but the subject's mighty rough
I wish this kid was grown up, at least up to my knees
So we could talk about the old days, Mick, and Goober's pees.

Most kids get a chance to earn a nickname like goober -- This child has been gifted pre-birth in song, games, repartee...

My youngest had to write an essay on how his family chose his name this fall. Imagine the teachers face. "Well my Mudcat Aunts and Uncles..."

Really - nine kids? Yikes! I somehow don't think either of us is looking for Goober to be one of nine. We'll try not to make the gifts of lore, repartee, etc. too predictive - except that I'm holding all of you to your diaper changing promises:

Mick receives a phone call at 3 in the morning:

ring

RING

Whadda hudda helLO?

Hi Mick! Goober's diapers need changing!

Whadda huh whatsa WHAT TIME IS IT?

3 a.m. You did say you wanted to change diapers, right?

But it's 45 minutes to your house!

Yeah, we'll take this one, but Goober'll be ready for another change by the time you get here...."

And Mick, being the big ol' sweetie he is, actually comes. And being naturally vengeful, he brings the Uilleann pipes....

Goober is all right for a prenatal name. When my ex and I saw the first ultrasound of our first all we could see was a frog so we called her Kermit. That disappeared immediately after she appeared. Go for Goober.

After our children were old enough came all the names they wish they'd never heard. I used to call them each Monkey Nose. They protested so I switched to Primate Proboscis.

Anyway, Congrats to Dan and Geeta.
