Sorry, Sinsull, I don't know. Do you have RealPlayer installed on your computer? That's the audio/video program you have to use to listen and watch the show.

I nearly caught up with y'all "live" for a few minutes, but I gat a decidedly sticky ball (mousewise). Didn't have it cleaned, before we had to head out on the road - a last minute group of tourists arrived. Dammit, would have loved an on-line chat while listening to MCR with ya'll. From your comments it sounds like a smashing show.

Doubly disappointing - It's my Birfday (27 April here).

kat - Give Colin my love today/tomorrow (Hmm.. it's 4:30pm, NZST, -16hrs for EST - must be about NOW) Between us we have reached the noble age of 87yrs. Hope he's feeling young 'cos I'm feeling that age without any outside assistance. It's been a long, hard summer - only about 5 real "days off" since October. I'm "peopled-out", and knackered.

Max - a word of advise from an old fart, twice your age! Keep up the good work and never grow up, or, you'll be like me at the moment.......

Feeling Old - oh, what an appropriate title for me for Episode XXXII. Hmm... 1975 - I was just back in harness, after a coupe of years on the road. Oh for the "good ol' days" ...

Anyway, off to the Pub now for a quaint Kiwi custom. Since it's MY birthday, I "shout" (buy drinks for my mates) - just a down-under way of doing things - not even sure if my OzCobs do it...;)

Then, back home, with a whisky, for a solitary stream of semi consciousness, listening to Episode XXXII - at least if I post to this thread, those who followed it will follow my ravings, if you follow what I mean.

Wish I'd caught you live. We'll keep that for a future pleasure.

kat - I don't believe what is going on at the moment. All I want to do is listen to Episode XXXII. When I was writing my thanks to Alison for the H'b'day BB thread, the fire siren went off. No probs, I'm too old (and inflammable) to be a member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade.

My automatic "OUT" sign-off, above, was when the siren went on the second time, and stayed on. That's the CDD "all hands" callout. Third time it's happened in the last decade - a bloody false alarm! I "rode to the end of the road" on the back of a truck, in the bloody cold.

Y'know, wee tart, timezones make this neck o'th'wood a wee tad lonesome. You lot can yap to each other in all-but real time. I sent out an invite on Alison's Birthday thread for others from other timezones to join me here, maybe some Aussies are still around, some Kuwaitis are on the job, and some Poms are rubbing the sleep out of their eyes.

"Freedom" - Pete Seeger - never met him got a neat letter from him about Guthries "Ladies Auxilary" - TAS (That's another story). Did meet Mike & Alice in 1970(ish) they are still together (for that thread) I understand.

Your writing that you saw Mike Seeger in the 1970s and he was with Alice and they are still together leaped out at me. I've often wondered about that. Probably in 1959, I took some time off from school to work with a group called The Living Theatre. Through them, I got to meet all sorts of people and that was why I was at a place called the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village. I was talking with the owner, Izzy Young, when a young man walked in and was warmly greeted by Izzy. There were two things about that moment that made it memorable to me. The first was being introduced to Mike S. and the second was learning that he was getting married the next day. I've often wondered how that marriage turned out. If they are together forty-one years later, it is good to know that Izzy Young's best wishes that day "took".

Well, it's 2:00pm NZST Fri 28 April, and I still haven't got to hear episode XXXII - my link with Mudcat went totally dead, as soon as I nade the above post and I couldn't get it back...;(

kat - m'dear - by using the term "tea", I was actually refering to "dinner" (tucker), which was "lambs fry" (sheep liver) and bacon. I hadn't won a hot rotisserie chicken at the Pub (5 draws). Winning tickets were - 34, 37, 38, 39, 40 (TRUE - I have photographic evidence) - I held ticket #36... Just my luck on my b'day, when I didn't feel like cooking "tea" (dinner).

Liquid consumption by the time I posted, was 3 pints of "Speights Old Dark" (beer), a double "Oban" (single malt whisky), and a couple or three "Willie Wilsons" (NZ Whisky) - not enough to make me "Tiddley-Pom"...;)

I just went to the Mike Seeger site and found it fascinating for a number of reasons, not the least of which was seeing that he is represented by Folklore Productions.

Back in Connecticut, when a group of us were putting on concerts in the late Fifties and early Sixties, it was Folklore Productions that I dealt with almost exclusively and Folklore Productions was Manny Greenhill. I was a kid, a college student, and Manny was a good businessman so I suspect we often didn't get the deal from him that more experienced negotiators would have worked out but we did put on good concerts with Odetta Felious, Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel and a number of others. Pete Seeger was Manny's biggest draw and he once "forced" us to take a young singer he was pushing, to hire her for a concert, if we wanted Pete Seeger. Since it only cost fifty dollars, we figured we could sell the hundred tickets we needed to cover the cost and promotion. You've probably guessed that the singer was Joan Baez. Within a couple of years we were begging him to let us hire her and her concert fee had gone from 2 figures to four.

I never knew about Manny's political activism. I learned about it on the link from Mike Seeger's site to the Folklore home page. I think if I had known, I would have admired him for what he stood for but I only knew him as a manager who tried to do the best he could for his artists and for his ten percent.

The only hint I had that he was unusual was when I needed to reach Pete Seeger for something. It was years later when I was working for PBS. I called Manny and asked, pleaded, to be able to speak to Seeger directly. He trusted me enough to break his and Seeger's rule that outsiders should not be able to call into the house. He gave me the Seeger's home phone number in New York but he made me promise that when I was done I would destroy my record of the number. I reached Pete Seeger, got what I needed (whatever that was) and threw away the phone number, the only time as a journalist I have ever destroyed a contact number (I still have home phone numbers for Henry Cabot Lodge and General Westmoreland!).

The saddest thing about an obituary is that you often learn things about a person that you didn't know and what I read about Manny Greenhill a few minutes ago was just that, an obituary containing memorable and striking achievements, many that involved risk taking and courage. Now I am sorry that I never had a chance to learn that side of him but I do thank you, Billy, for helping me to complete another circle.

Actually, there was a Mudcatter in NZ when I first came here, Pete Metcham. He had to quit 'catting to do some big contract for work and very rarely comes round anymore; in fact I haven't seen him in ages. Do ICQ him sometimes.

The one thing that has really helped me to not feel so isolated, away from the fine folk you speak of, is to join in the HearMe sessions. Even if you don't have a mic, if you have a sound card, you can go in there and listen, plus there is a text chat. It is loads of fun and, there were still people in there a few minutes ago. Come share a song or two when any of us is in there. Alsion and Spider Tom, both in OZ were in there, Jon from Wales...many of us stay connected that way. It is a wonderful and to me it seems miraculous way to put a voice wiht the name! Just click on the HearME Now thread and click on the link, then there will be a small download. When you get there click on the text chat and you will get a greta big hello from everyone in there.
