Porto's second goal last night should never have been allowed to stand. Arsene Wenger was entirely right in his complaint to the 4th official, & then to the referee himself, that time must in such circumstances be allowed for the defence to organise, & the free-kick cannot be taken just like that with no signal or preparation time: especially in that position 7 yards away from the goal. What has happened to the fine & valuable old principle of "Play to the whistle"?

That man Hansson has now twice shown himself to be a hopeless referee ~~ he is the one who allowed the goal to stand after Henry's blatant handball recently. I am generally against such measures, but I think the time is fast approaching when managers/coaches should agree worldwide to boycott any match where he is designated to officiate.

I always thought that a team had an option to take a free kick instatnly or ask for time to take it.

This sort of situation has happened in the past and I remember Andy Gray dealing with this.

Doesn't teh ref ask the palyer if they want to take it quickly. If they say yes, they do.

The fault is with Fabianski who had a nightmare game. Why did he pick the ball up. Having done that he should have thrown it away.

If the Arsenal players had stood over the ball instead of screaming like banshees arguing with the ref., the kick wouldn't have been taken quickly.

But it made my day seeing Arsehole Whinger sucking all those lemons!

Aaaaahh, so you don't agree on the second para then? :-) :-)

The problem was that First-Class Professional International Footballers, who earn three times as much per week as I do per annum, stopped behaving like First-Class International Professional Footballers and started behaving like 7-year-olds in a local kids' league - they stopped concentrating on doing the important things and started concentrating on the doing the despicable thing they so love to do.

They lost concentration, they got punished for it - exactly what they deserved. And maybe another suitable punishment would be for Arsehole Whinger to dock them all a week's pay and give it to one of the Haiti Earthquake charities. The players would barely notice the loss, but the charity would definitely notice a million or so dropping into their coffers.

Refereeing is very difficult these days with TV replaying the action from several different views in slow motion. But that ref (and his assistant) missed a certain Arsenal penalty. And he seemed over keen to put the football down in the right place quickly.

How he dare show his face in public after missing Thierry Henri's handball that put the Irish out of the World Cup.

Sorry BWM ~ how rude of me; didn't mean to shout, just got stuck on shiftlock.

Yes, It has happened before; but I still think the convention that play stopped for a free kick, which wouldn't be taken until the referee signalled by hand gesture or whistle, was preferable to the modern rushrushrush. But then, any player would have scorned to take a fistful of another player's shirt in those days ...

Ah me: think I must just be getting old...

BUT I STILL SAY ARSENAL WERE ROBBED (shout intentional this time).

Thanks Mike - and I think I must be getting old too!
How I long for the days of old when a football had a lace that left it's imprint on your forehead for a week if you headed it, when it was a matter of huge pride to any half-decent player stay on his feet when under pressure, and when goalkeepers didn't have the modern, invisible force-field surrounding them to protect them from being bumped and perhaps even slightly jostled by those nasty, opposition forwards. :-)

How right you are BWM: I was a goalkeeper in my time. I recall once being shouldercharged as I was off-balance as I caught the ball, & the opposing forward's impetus carried him after me into the goal, where he stumbled (it was all entirely accidental I am sure) & sat heavily on my head. And the goal stood. His name [why should I remember this?] was Alfred Young.

Today's spoiled and pampered goalkeepers don't know they are born!

BUT I STILL SAY ARSENAL WERE ROBBED ~ et Carthaginia delinda est, wotsmore!

I collect goalkeepers BTW ~ shall start a new thread to show what I mean & invite contribs...

It might make sense to have a rule that a free kick can only be taken when the referee signals for it to be taken, but there isn't such a rule at present. And a referee is supposed to operate to the rules as they exist.

Well there used to be such a rule, McG. Was it ever actually abolished? I don't think so, but that it has just fallen into conventional desuetude. So it must be revived & properly enforced. Much as I hate association football the addition feels rather condescending.

Porto were quite entitled to take the free kick quickly.....that is beyond doubt. The part the referee played in demanding the ball and handing it to Porto needs looking at, however. In the end fabianski shouldn't have handled in the first place, and shopuld have drooped the ball rather than handing it back, while campbell should have stood over the ball immediately.

NO, TUG, IT ISN'T =====

From laws of Soccer ···

Free Kick Inside the Penalty Area --
all opponents are at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball until it is in play, unless they are on their own goal line between the goalposts
---

This surely works both ways: not only must defenders retreat 10 yds or to their own goal line; but the kick can not be taken till they have. This law seems quite clear to me.

You may find this interesting from the rules of polo:

Penalties

The following penalties may be given.

A goal is given if the cross is dangerous or deliberate in the vicinity of the goal. The ball is then thrown in 10 yds in front of the goal without ends being changed.

Free hit from 30 yds opposite the centre of the goal - defenders to be behind the back line and outside th6 goal posts but must not ride through when the ball is hit.

Free hit from 40 yds, same conditions as b).
Free hit from 60 yds. Defenders to be 30 yds from ball.

Free hit from the centre of the ground, none of the defending side to be nearer than 30 yds when the ball is hit.

Free hit from spot where the foul took place, no defender to be nearer than 30 yds

Corners are not taken as in Association Football - instead, a free hit is given 60 yds from the goal from a spot opposite where the ball was hit behind the line, none of the defending side to be nearer than 30 yds.

Captains of teams are the only players who can discuss questions arising during a game. No player shall appeal in any manner to the Umpire for fouls, but me Captain can discuss any matter with the Umpire.

hi

In my paper today there was detailed discussions with four football "experts". Every one of them agreed that the referee was right to allow the free kick to be taken quickly.

Two of them thought that he was wrong to give a free kick in the first place because it wasn't clear if Campbell had deliberately passed back to the goalkeeper.

What concerned me was Wenger's ill-disipline with the two match officials. Other managers would have been censored and reported to the FA.

No, Mgm is wrong. Quick free kicks are allowed. However, IF the referee stops play and insists on the rule MgM selectively produces, THEN and only then must the appropriate distances be observed before the kick can be taken.

I'd have thought that with a thread title "Redskins were robbed" it would indeed be advisable to indicate that it was about US sports rather than US history.

               ==============================

Your use of word 'selectively' peculiarly tendentious, Tug. It's there in print. I didn't 'select' it from alternatives stating differently: which undermines your point that the ref must indicate if the kick can't be taken quickly, That has become the usage due to lazy neglect of the real rules. My point is that it is time for the perfectly clear rule to be properly enforced. Time that the concept of "Play to the whistle" were revived. Any decent ref wd have just brought ball back & made kick be taken again when defence ready for it. But the way he not only gave the kick, which dubious [was it a real back pass or just a deflection?], but put the ball down at the kick-taker's feet to help him on with taking it quickly [&, I repeat, illegally] shows which side he was on. So I repeat the title of the thread in big letters ~~~

It's not the protestations of Mr. Whinger that wind me up, IMHO he has every right as manager to 'discuss' this kind of issue with the 4th official, but it's the lemon-sucking that goes on for the rest of the game - what a miserable sourpuss that guy is!

But the entire blame lies at the joint doors of Campbell and the keeper - Campbell for not dealing with the ball properly in the first place, the keeper for picking the ball up, and Campbell again (and possibly other Arsenal players in the immediate vicinity) for not concentrating on what was going on and, instead, concentrating on berating the ref, shouting and effing and blinding at him as seems to be de rigeur nowadays. If they'd watched what the ref did, and stood on the ball, the kick wouldn't have been possible and everything else would be irrelevant. They're paid huge fortunes and they're supposed to be Professionals. They behaved like amateur junior kids-leaguers and paid the price. End of.

IMHO, of course! :-)

I don't think the people on here who are saying that Arsenal were robbed are taking account of the quick free kick Henry took for Arsenal some years ago.

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Stop whinging and look at the result.

>>MtheGM - [LEARN TO SPELL!] <<

There are probably quite a few people on Mudcat who are dyslexic and have problems. Not saying that the above person is, but just be thankful you aren't.

One of the other problems is, that when things start to get a bit heated, people post in haste and then kick themselves becuase they didn't edit the text before hitting the submit button. I suppose that is one thing I don't like about Mudcat, is the lack of an Edit button.

Anyway Aresenal were not robbed (just stupid and niave) and it's all sour grapes.
