Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: Rick Fielding Date: 13 Nov 02 - 05:06 PM I'm an "older" Mudcatter, and definitely 'worldly and wise' and I still don't have a clue what's up with Hull. I've been told by people who SHOULD know, that all the folks from Hull are in reality three people, posting coded messages to aliens. What I DO know is that the person calling himself "John from Hull" made the funniest joke I've yet heard on Mudcat. Heather still laughs uproariously when I say "chip ship". I think they're probably quite a bit saner than they appear. Any new information appreciated though. Rick |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: Sorcha Date: 13 Nov 02 - 05:09 PM All I can tell you is that Hull is "Kingston On Hull", a geographical area in England, that is a hotbed of Mudcat activity. There are over 50 Catters there. |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: GUEST,Greycap Date: 13 Nov 02 - 06:43 PM Hull was once described to me as "A fish 'n' chip shop, 60 miles up a railway siding"...maybe this sets the scene a little. I've always found the people there very friendly. |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Nov 02 - 09:36 PM Kingston-Upon-Hull is a delightful town, with some very nice and very talented people, at least two fascinating museums, an interesting seaport on the Humber River, and one helluva bridge. Less from Hull gave Bill Sables and me a great tour in August. Oh, and they're the only place in the UK that has white telephone booths. Can't figure why that merits two Hull phone threads in one week, though. Personally, though, I think that the Hull chitchat at Mudcat is on the banal side. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: Geoff the Duck Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:17 AM Th main problem with 'Ull is that it is flat. People learning to drive around Hull have to find a humpbacked bridge so that they can practice how to do a Hill Start. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: Bassic Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:37 AM I agree with all the above. Yes we do get a bit bannal at times and it must seem a little shelfish in that so much of the Hull based contributions rely on some degree of local knowlege. However, the sheer volume of trafic does produce some gems. I am sure we are not the only part of the world with eccentrics! I seem to remember a quaint TV programme about a small town in Alaska which was populated entirely by eccentrics. As we are a city in the North of England I would assert that a little bit of Northern Exposure never did anybody any harm! Sorry got to go now, Just recieved a PM from the Curry Mothership, the ambassador from Dislexia Prime in the Gamma quadrant is about to land. Nanu Nanu |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Nov 02 - 10:09 AM Well............For those of us who are denizens of Mudcat, Hull has indeed gained "iconic" status9. I think it all started with John's defective keyboard, not to mention his equally de9fective brain. We have about 10 million members from Hull and I recently decided that a band that performs there shall heretofor be the "Official Band" of the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed. This group is of course "Punch the Horse" which draws lots of attention in Hull nowadays. They were formerly known as "Assfuck the Zebra" but the name change has finally gotten them the recognition they deserve outside of the bestiality community. Take 4 Tylenol and read the threads.......If you can figure any more out, let me know. Also, pay no attention to Joe Offer. Joe considers many threads in bad form as well as all of my postings. He is currently researching the 17,000+ postings I have made here and trying to find one of any redeeming social value. Spaw |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: Crane Driver Date: 14 Nov 02 - 07:05 PM The drains. When we were there, the smell round Durty Nellies was quite something. Maybe it wasn't the drains. Is there any truth in the rumour that John from Hull is actually an English teacher by day, and just needs to let off stress at night? Andrew |

Subject: RE: whats the problem with hull From: GUEST Date: 14 Nov 02 - 07:34 PM Please Joe give this the BS prefix it deserves. Not only is it drivel, it contains yet another example of spaw being "witty" - "Assfuck the Zebra". Please, now that a filter is in place, encourage the usage of prefixes. Yes, I renamed the thread - but it already had the invisible "BS" tag on it. Trouble it, that doesn't work unless you're a registered Mudcatter and click the "No BS" box on the Mudcat registration form. |

Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Nov 02 - 03:46 AM If I understand John correctly, the River Hull flows into the Humber at Kingston-Upon-Hull. Correct? This site (click) seems to confirm that, and gives lots of other information about Hull. This site (click) gives a pictorial river tour. OK, you Hull people, maybe you can help me in my quest for lighthouses. On the shores of the River Humber, there's a very nice pub that is supposed to be a good spot for singarounds - what's the name of that pub? In front of the pub is what is reputed to be the Finest Loo in All England, with hanging plants and all manner of decoration. OK, if I look a long way downstream from that pub, I see something on the north shore of the river that looks like a lighthouse. Is it? If it is, what's the name of the lighthouse? -Joe Offer- |
|
Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: Abuwood Date: 15 Nov 02 - 04:32 AM That's easy the Minerva Pub is by the river and they are the best loos in the country, Ladies are often seen going to view the Gents. I wonder if you are looking at Paul Light house up by Saltend Chemical works? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: The DeanMeister Date: 15 Nov 02 - 04:49 AM Don't know about the lighthouse, Joe, but the Pub you refer to is the Minerva, which hosts a superb singaround during the Hull Shanty Festival. The fancy Loo is also quite something, apparently it wins awards for the best kept toilet in the country...a dubious honour, but if any of you get to see it you will understand. The brass and porcelain is kept so beautifully it really is a shame to use the place for it's designated purpose! I have lived in the hull area (Beverley actually) for ten years, and I can certainly vouch for it's friendly population, and thriving music scene. There are sessions and Folk clubs to attend most nights of the week. Hull's now defunct "Folk Union One" club at the Blue Bell was indeed the birthplace of the internationally acclaimed Waterson Family, Guy Wolfe. With regard to the Mudcat population, they are actually for the most part an extremely intelligent bunch, talented singers and musicians, and not nearly as mad as they seem, as anybody who actually reads the contents of our threads properly should be able to ascertain. Hope this clears a few things up, people. Pete. |

Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: Bassic Date: 15 Nov 02 - 06:46 AM Just to confirm Joe, it is Paull Lighthouse, (put Paull Lighthouse into Google for more info). There is also a 19th centuary Defensive Battery in Paull which can trace its origins back to Viking times (Google again, Paull Fort). Paull Fort took over the duties of the Hull Citadel, Joh9ns "big fish deep see museum, it is called The DEep" is built on the site of the Citadel at the confluence of the Hull and Humber rivers. The John Speed map of 1610 at this site, www.hullcc.gov.uk/archaeology/maps.htm shows the inverted Horseshoe shape of the City walls in that era. Where the wall terminates at its south eastern end is now the location of the Deep, the south western terminous is now the location of the Minerva! The entrance to the Dock behind the Minerva follows the line of the Moat which protected the outside of the City Walls. The church you can see on the Map just to the north of the Minerva location is called Holy Trinity and it is the largest Parish Curch in England, (i.e. not officially designated as a cathedral). I used to be Head Choir Boy there when I was a youth. The River Hull, to the East of Holy Trinity, is where all the Curr9y ships and Chip Ships used tie up and discharge there wares into "warehouses" that still line the riverbank along the historic High Street. So now you will all know what we are talking about!! One day I will have the courage to do "blue clickys". http://www.paull-lighthouses.co.uk/ |

Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: smallpiper Date: 15 Nov 02 - 07:33 AM Okay help me out, since when has the Humber Estuary been designated a river? Kingston upon Hull does indeed sit on the River Hull where the River Hull flows into the Humber Estuary. The smell around Dirty Nellies is the River Hull which flows (aligidly) about 25 meters behind said pub. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Nov 02 - 01:56 PM Well we call it a river (as in River Humber) but it's really an estuary as it doesn't have a source on land. It starts where the Ouse and Trent come in (Trent Falls) and drains about a fifth of the land area of England, which accounts for its colour (brown). Or as we say - too thick to drink, too thin to plough. I will gladly repeat the cultural tour of Hull I did with Joe and Bill for any visiting Mudcatter. I do about one pint of Guinness to the hour. |

Subject: RE: BS: whats the problem with hull From: harpmaker Date: 15 Nov 02 - 03:57 PM Beverley folk festival is worth a look. Note- page one, Bill Sables and pal, pal is Christine, Harpmaker=John&Christine!( confuseing? not if your from Hull!) Note the fancy mandolin (Turn of the century) This site also has pics of Harpmaker/Christine under Oxytocin, Punch the growbag, and Freedoms road(Whitby photo) "Chip ship" in Hull is code for the starship Enterprise, and "John from Hull" is actually a computer virus. I'm a newcomer to mudcat and I've just read all the emails about Hull and I can only assume that most of you must live in the US as you dont know anything about it. Whats all the fuss about? Its not worth discussing apart from its excellent folk scene. And yes it does smell! So, if any you yanks are thinking of visiting go to Grimsby and Cleethorpes instead. Great folk music ( its where John Conolly lives - he wrote "Fiddlers Green") and Grimsby Town Football Club can knock the socks off any team in Hull! and its just across the river (oops, estuary) from Hull. PS I now live in Minneapolis Minnesota USA which also has a great folk scene. |
