Yesterday (June 9th) was my birthday (she says with head bent, hands behind back and toe twisting in sand). I realize that the Catspaw AND Bat Goddess birthdays are a mighty tough act to follow, but if there are any birthday happies left over after all that partyin', they'd be greatly appreciated. Yesterday was kinda sucky for me, so I could use a little good cheer. Thanks.

An Octave is where you celebrate your b'day for 8 days: start on the eve before, and then continue for a week after. That way, belateds aren't so belated, and 1 sucky day can be made up with others that aren't.

Well horse feathers. If your toe is in the sand it means you are barefoot. If you are barefoot you are either pregnant (in the pleasurable company of your lover true)or in warm weather on the coast. Well you could be on the Bruneau Sand Dunes in Idaho but I'd know that if you were. And that you are shuffling it around tells me you are alive - that can be good or not depending upon your perspective. Hands behind your back indicates that you are safe - otherwise you'd have them in front protecting yourself - and a bent head means you got dropped as a kid. The good news is you lived through the fall!!

I won't tell you what I told Spaw but you have a superb day - Enjoy it - as it is the only day like this you will get today.

Thanks so much, everyone, for your good wishes and hugs. (You like me! You really like me!) You really have cheered me up, and I really did need it! Please understand that Sunday wasn't a violently sucky day or anything, just a "downer" day. Sundays are always depressing for me as a matter of course, since Sunday is the day my two brothers and I habitually visit my father in the nursing home (actually, the "medical facility" of a retirement community – pretty much the same thing, really). I usually see at least one brother then but, last Sunday, I was the only sibling to show up. I could have gone to an afternoon bluegrass concert but I blew that off to do my daughterly duty, and I'm glad I did since everyone else in the family was absent. Amazingly, my dad, who's 88 and mentally losing touch (holding conversations with my deceased mother, taking day trips with his deceased mother, and so forth), remembered that my brother had reminded him to wish me a happy birthday! After that bright spot, however, the discussion devolved back into descriptions of his twilight fantasy world. So the combination of that depressing chat, plus the absence of any other family members (no cards or phone calls from them, either), plus the lack of any significant other to wine and dine me, left me a little "down" and a little hungry for attention. Thanks again to you all for being so nice!

BTW, one brother called last night to wish me a belated birthday and to say that cards from him and "from Dad" (meaning my brother sent it in Dad's stead) are on the way. Also had some fun and music last night (helping my blind friend work out chords to songs in her Braille book of lyrics). Also had a small epiphany and decided to work on accepting my dad as he is and stop lamenting the loss of what he was. So yesterday was less sucky than Sunday! Whaddaya know – the Mudcat Magic really works!!! *BG*

Sharon, these birthday threads are kinda weird, to start, because unless you know someone well enough to know if they would appreciate a thread, you just don't start one. Take me, for instance. I just really hate my birthday. Not because of getting older-- I LIKE that part. But it's associated with some stuff I prefer to think about when I feel like working on it, not just because an anniversary has caught up with me. So when someone asked me recently, "Hey, aren't you having a birthday...." I was able to say, "Um, yeah, but geeze, no thread, OK?"

In person it's all different-- I mean, if we'd gone ahead with the gathering and you'd been here on your birthday for THAT-- well, I think you would have liked what might have happened. Instead, on my end, I got caught up in various crises others were having, and about all I've been able to retain by day's end is where the heck my bed is! So I'm sorry that I missed seeing that you might have wanted a thread.

So hey! Whaddaya doing NEXT year for yer birthday? And when are you coming up here, huh?

I guess the new lines don't add any meaning. I was, of course, trying to mix in parts of her name and terms of good characteristics, like grace, stability, smart and heart, and still get it all to rhyme.

The point is, SharonA, I appreciate having you there on the threads where we both post. I notice you, I notice that you are intelligent and thoughtful and a good person to be having a dialogue with, among, whatever. I'm glad that the days are getting better -- may that trend just keep on going.

And "A very merry un-birthday" is from the cartoon musical version of Alice in Wonderland. No substitute for the book itself, but not bad as these things go, I guess. I generally really prefer the originals.

I'm noticing the onset of CRS, myself, so that could explain his inaction too (and it's a great excuse for you to forget his b'day – why wait till 2006?). If it's any consolation, I haven't heard from my 50-year-old brother or his family yet, though that's not unusual since I'm not in touch with them as closely as with the other bro!

Genie: Likewise, the "Shar-care-eclair" stanza is inspired! It's a funny thing: in this particular geographical area (the suburbs of Philadelphia PA) one finds different pronunciations of words, depending on where the speaker grew up (the city, the near suburbs, the far suburbs or the more rural area). One of those words is the name "Sharon"; my family pronounces it with a long "a", and that's what I've come to think of as "my name", but more often than not people pronounce it with a short "a" so I've learned to answer to that as well... and to "[my] Sharóna"...*G*

To answer Linn's question, I think you have to tell Jeff (Pene Azul) specifically that you want the year included in the listing of your birthdate. At least, that's what I did!

SharonA: for pronunciation you could always copy the one used for the Israeli regularly in the news. It may give you new rhymes, and the emphasis usually falls on the second syllable, thus giving a change in metre.
The other one that surprised me was Coal-in Powell!
