Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: John MacKenzie Date: 14 Apr 25 - 09:06 AM I've had to give Whitby up unfortunately, as I find the hills just too much to cope with nowadays. Sad, it's my favourite English festival. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Raggytash Date: 15 Apr 25 - 06:31 AM Whoa Fred, Whitby Folk Week is fabulous and is basically split into two parts. One the organised festival in spread across the town in about 25 venues, about 700-800 individual events totalling well over 1000 hours of entertainment. In addition is the fringe which in itself it brilliant, different bars have their different followers, one bar will be mainly tunes, another mainly trad, another mainly Americana etc etc There is something for everybody ! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Fred Date: 15 Apr 25 - 07:33 AM Raggy, I'll bring my D-18 then. Should be a good week :) Thanks for the info. Fred |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Nick Dow Date: 16 Apr 25 - 09:53 AM We are organising two concerts on Weds and Thursday. We are waiting for details of which day for what. The Yorkshire Songster will be launched by Steve, Ruairidh Greig Alice and Bryony, Pip and Will Noble, Cohen and maybe a song from me. MC will be Clive Boutle. The Marrowbones concert will celebrate the entire series of books, and will have a number of singers including Matt Quinn, Cohen, Mossy Christian, Steve, and myself plus maybe one or two other singers. Full details when I have them. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 17 Apr 25 - 03:45 AM That looks wonderful. I hope you've booked a big enough venue for it. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 17 Apr 25 - 08:15 AM Sadly not going this year, nor to Sidmouth, which were always my big two festivals along with many other smaller ones. Hearing gone is my excuse: wearing 2 powerful hearing aids, but music all sounds out of tune, so it's tricky to sing or play any more. But have just had a nice week's holiday which took in both Sidmouth and Whitby - nice to see them as they are out of festival time. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 17 Apr 25 - 03:50 PM Hope to see you there, Nick, if not before. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Mo the caller Date: 20 Apr 25 - 02:22 PM Whitby is the highlight of my year. There are concerts for those who want to sit down and be entertained but a lot of the organised festival as well as the fringe is based on participation, dances, sing-arounds, tunes sessions, workshops. There are so many folk legends who are there to share their expertise. The hills and the spread of events through the town are a problem, it pays to study the programme, mark a 'must' for each day then plan around it. The year I wanted to go to 2 piano accordion workshops which had 10 minutes between them, one on the West Cliff, the other across the harbour was fun. Cliff running / weightlifting and a swung bridge. And parking is a problem, so the car isn't much help. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Mo the caller Date: 20 Apr 25 - 02:40 PM And usually Shape note and West Gallery workshops |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 21 Apr 25 - 05:10 AM The last time my friend and I were there, we were lucky to get a B&B close to the Leisure Centre, with parking available. She was hampered by foot/ankle problems, so we divided our time between the Conservative and Rifle Clubs , the Metropole and Spa. I think we only got across the bridge once in the whole week. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Fred Date: 21 Apr 25 - 06:23 AM I'm lucky, in that one of our daughters lives in Whitby. I'm a bit concerned though as with talk of cliff running and weightlifting, Mo made it sound like an heptathlon :) Fred |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 24 Apr 25 - 07:57 PM We've booked a room in the George, which is dead central and will probably be very noisy. Anybody in contact with the Yacht Club? That was the best venue the Eurosession ever had but I think some personal bad feeling got in the way? I don't know the details and don't want to. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 09 Jun 25 - 08:05 PM Who's interested in fringey things? Previous years I've been, the Eurosession was great. Anybody organizing it this year? I organized a flat-keys session once, anybody into that? Maybe a session in C for East Anglian and Scan Tester repertoire? Idioms from way outside the British Isles? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Fred Date: 10 Jun 25 - 04:19 AM I'm ready for this. My Martin D-18 and Ome North Star are in fine fettle. It's my first time there - and probably my last once they've witnessed my performance! :) Fred |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 16 Jun 25 - 03:26 AM Warning from the WFW FB group: there are now no bank branches in Whitby, and almost all of them have taken their ATMs away. There is still an ATM at the Co-Op, but it was never adequately stocked before and is even less reliable now. WFW will try to take payments by contactless terminal, but mobile internet coverage is uneven. So fill your codpiece with enough doubloons, denarii and groats to last the week. Given the sort of tourist influx they get, this will be payday for pickpockets. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Fred Date: 16 Jun 25 - 05:06 AM Thanks for the info, Jack. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: GUEST,Geoff the Duck Date: 22 Jun 25 - 09:30 AM Hi Jack. The Ducks will be there! A number of pubs have changed management in recent years, which played havoc with old regular fringe song or music sessions. Roy Hardaker has tended to use Facebook as a place to update information about folk friendly venues during the actual week. We probably won't get a clear picture until much closer to the actual dates. Quack! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: GUEST,JoJoFolkaGoGo Date: 24 Jun 25 - 07:39 PM I go to Whitby every year and never pay by card ... Cash Is King ... but correct about waiting room - card only in there, so I give it a miss. The Festival is as good as ever ... never pay for a ticket (£405 plus £70 camp this year) because you cannot possibly see all the events. Every day sees me in Endeavour for the Shanty Session, then it's traipsing around the pubs ... Enjoy ?? ?????????????? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 24 Jun 25 - 08:21 PM My guess is that there are no cash-only pubs and very few cash-only retail premises, is that right? I really can't be dealing with Cash Is King types. My worry was specifically about event door admissions. It isn't WFW's fault that portable card readers or point-your-phone-at-a-QR-code might not work. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 25 Jun 25 - 04:53 AM Lucky if you can get a mobile signal down at the Spa! And I’m not into using unsecured Wifi networks. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: GUEST Date: 18 Jul 25 - 08:26 AM Jack asked about Euro sessions. I've just had an email. From Mandi Johnson who contacted me via Facebook (the Whitby chat page?) Church Sessions from 3 - 5pm starting on Saturday 16th - not Sunday - then Monday to Friday. West Cliff Church, Skinner St, Evening session at the Royal: Monday 18th 8pm - please do not go in earlier, because people will still be eating in that area. Then Friday to Friday at the Conservative Club (not Monday) at 7:30pm |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 19 Jul 25 - 03:15 AM The trouble with Whitby for me is not knowing what is on the programme far enough in advance. My situation is that I want to go for about 3 days and I want to know which 3 days to go for. How do you decide if you don't know what is on? I just have to guess and hope that I'm not missing out. Robin |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Fred Date: 19 Jul 25 - 05:07 AM Well we (Mrs F and myself) are lucky in that one of our identical twin daughter, Laura, lives in Whitby, and we'll just stay there the whole time. I'm quite looking forward to it. -F |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 19 Jul 25 - 06:05 AM The full programme is out now. We're going to be there the whole week so we don't need the full details in advance as "black belt caterpillar wrestler" does. I should be at the Eurosession in the church on Saturday afternoon and we'll take it from there. In previous years I've organized a flat-key session and this year I'd like to organize one for the Tunesday Tuesday FB group as well - but I can't remember how I did it. Finding a venue in advance when you're not in town isn't easy. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Jack Campin Date: 19 Jul 25 - 11:35 AM Previous years, there has been a rehearsal for the West Gallery service on the Saturday afternoon, not listed in the programme but easy to find if you get to Whitby in time. Is it happening this year? (It may clash with the opening Eurosession). |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week August 2025 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 Jul 25 - 05:22 AM Hope to see you in The Waiting Room, Fred. I will message you with my phone number so we can either text or WhatsApp arrangements |
