BlueJay here. Thanks, Kat. The other one was getting a bit long. I can't adequately describe last night's visit from Allan, Bill, BanjomanCO and Banjomama, his delightful wife. We all had such a great time. We played till the wee hours. All of these folks are such tremendous talents. What a treat. I was greatly relieved That Bill had brought his own stock of Yorkshire tea, as I looked all over my small town in vain for the stuff. He brewed me a cup, wonderful stuff. No wonder the English drink tea. Lots of tunes, lots of photos, and these guys are first class all the way. Nuff said. I enjoyed it so much, I'm on my way to Evergreen for more! You folks further down the road are in for one Helluva treat! Bluejay

Allan here. I have always wondered what you use as bait for breath - maybe swallow CO2 capsules?

Our trip to Leadville began with a brief stop at Poo-Twa's house. He had wanted to work a few miracles on the bridge of the Mudcat Tour guitar. He did just that. It is a much finer instrument for the experience.

We then said goodbye to Poo-Twa and Annie and headed onward toward Leadville. (There is much, much more to tell you about our visit with them and about a great new invention we saw there; but I will save that for another time.)

We left behind the low plains and were soon fully immersed in the Rockies. These ragged and immense peaks are still streaked with snow where the sunlight has not yet melted the deep snow in their crevaces. Before very long we found ourselves in the high plains where the wind was both powerful and constant. After driving miles and miles of straight roadway, we came at last to Leadvile.

It was great to watch Bill's excitement as he gazed around at an old mine shaft, a street which had once held about sixty saloons, and various old buildings which lined the main street. He was walking where his relative had walked about 140 years before.

We took lots of pictures and talked a bit with some of the townspeople. Then we headed up the road to LEJ's.

We arrived here around 10 PM and after some conversation over a cuppa, we all headed for bed.

Today, while LEJ is at work, Bill and I will head out to Denver to do some exploring. Then this evening LEJ has planned a Colorady-style barbeque which will be attended by WyoWoman and Rex Rideout. BlueJay is planning to drive up from Trinidad to be here as well. Sounds like a fun time!

Note to Alice: We have changed our route slightly to include Sheridan, WY. There is a saddlery shop there which displays a lot of the work of Al Stohlman - a truly great leather carver. We will be getting a VERY early start tomorrow morning and so should be on time (around six or so) for our arrival in the Gardiner area.

Allan here again: Sorry, Alice. I spaced out. I said "tomorrow" in the post above. I was way ahead of myself. We are leaving Casper EARLY Sunday morning, stopping by Sheridan and then going on to Gardiner. We are spending the night there at Wayne's place (not a 'Catter, folks - YET) and heading to Bozeman on Monday morning.

Take your time playing music with Wayne on Monday. It is a rather short drive to Bozeman from Gardiner compared to your trek from Casper to Gardiner. In fact, think about going back into the Park from Gardiner on Monday and sight-seeing a little during daytime before heading north to Bozeman. Our session is Sunday, so I'm not sure how many musicians I can get together for a Monday night... maybe we'll just sit around singing at my house.

Alice, thanks for the bated, I was resisting saying just that. I believe it to be related to the "bate" of falconry, which is the behavior of a pissed-off hawk who throws itself off your gauntlet to hand by its jesses and thrash... And if y'all are taking requests... I'll think of some! Eat well, play well, keep us jealous!

Allan and Bill, how early would you like folks to be over at my house for a Harmonic Convergence on Saturday, for sure, Firday if ya feel like it? I was thinking around six (but it could be early if you want to get started earlier and not go too late) with something for dinner, no sit down style just help yourself and find a spot, then some music...Friday, since I am not sure what time you are thinking of getting to Casper, I've left unplanned and it'll be up to you guys if you want to play or not. (Oh sure, kat, they're gonna get there & NOT sing for you after coming all that way and all of the excitement building up??!!) At some point I'd like to try a couple of tunes of us all in HearMe for other folks to hear, but not sure when, prob. Sat. night? The Culture Fest goes on all day BUT I don't plan on being there the whole day. Do want to be sure to make it for the bagpiper & the Native American dancers, as long as that fits with your schedule and desires too...in other words...your wishes are my commend!**BG**

Also, Sorcha what does your time frame look like for Saturday, arrival wise etc. just so we know when to meet and stow the orchestra, etc.

AND, all three of my sisters will be here, SOOOO....blood harmony coming through!! Yeehaw!!!

Ca't wait, can't wait, can't wait!!!!

And, Sheridan is gorgeous, one of my favourite spots, plus there is going to be a leather goods guy at the Culture Fest, BUT I have no idea of quality/ability/etc.

Other things you could do: drive southwest an hour out of Casper and see Independence Rock with all of the pioneers' names carved into it; on the way the old Sun Ranch has been made into a museum etc. by the LDS church and I hear is quite interesting, there is a place on teh ranch called Devil's Gate where the wagons used to go through; also Alcova Lake and Pathfinder Dam are out that way, but would take a lot of time to explore. Just across the street from the Culture Fest is old Ft. Caspar, which I mentioned early on.

Oh, and while I may commend your wishes they are my command!**bg** as well as few other typos!

yo, kat--the plan is Friday, go up to Ft. Laramie and Guernsey to do the old fort, Register Cliff, and the big Ruts. Don't know what time we will get started, and don't know if they will want to swing up and see Guernsey Lake or the Miner's Bar in Hartville. It's the oldest bar in Wyo, and really neat. Then, they will continue to Casper, while I go to visit my gut bucket player (he had a mild stroke over Memorial Weekend, and will be moving to Casper. He won't be able to play with us anymore, sob sob)I will come back to Torr Friday afternoon, and we will come up Sat. AM. I see no problem with them being there by 4PM, easily.

As for Saturday, I don't have a plan yet. What time does the Festival start, and what time are you planning to be there? Arriving before 9AM seems a little chancy, and 10 is probably closer to the mark. If we are not going to jam or anything at the festival, I would prefer to leave the orchestra at your house. It's either that, or carry it all day, which I don't really mind. I might get an Offer, ya know!! AND, Hubby is coming wiht us!!

Wow! Way kewl! Thanks, Sorcha! Fest starts at 10 and goes until 6p. You can get there anytime ya want, see the thread for the actual times of each performance. We hadn't asked the guys to perform because it is supposed to showcase Wyomingites & the culture they grew up with, BUT, it is up to you if you pack it around, as there is a fiddler's club opening the entertainment part at 1030a. I don't know anything about them, their flexibility, etc. My house would be fine, I will probably go to the Fest by about 10a or so, depending on Bill & Allan and my sister who is staying at my house, bet/Betty, the udder Mudderof the family...**BG**

I'll put a kettle on for Friday evening's tea then and see them when they get here! And, you on Saturday, even the Mister, eh?!! Great!

I think ity is just the Casper Fiddlers' Club, but look at the thread, Sorch, I refreshed but don't have it in front of me right now.

From Torrington, you'll be coming in on the Interstate, right? Best to take the Exit for Poplar Street, just after the downtown one (which takes you onto Center Street). End of the exit ramp, turn left, so that you are headed south towards the mountain, it will take you in a curve, then up and over a viaduct. Stay on Poplar until you get to Collins (West Collins by then, I think)(2 lights from after you get over the viaduct. Turn right on Collins, follow it, it curves up and around, then you go down on a straighaway, past the old Tank Farm, but all of the tanks are gone. Follow that until you hit a light. Directly across the road is Fort Caspar, to your left is the Fairgrounds. Make a left at the light onto Wyoming Blvd., go down to your next left, which is Fairside Road (according to my map), it goes a couple of so blocks and to your left will be the Fairgrounds, trun left into them, go all the way down to the last big building ont he right and there ya are at The Industrial Building.

Don't worry, if you get off somewhere else, you can always find the Central Wyoming Fiargounds. If you hit CY Avenue, follow, it will take you there, too.

Let me know if this is clear as mud!**BG**

Rex, sounds like you had fun!

Allan here. Sorcha, that plan sounds good to me. We will go wherever you point us.

kat, fret not. We will arrive shortly after Sorcha turns us over to your domain. From that moment on it is WE who are at YOUR command. If you want to do some music Friday night, fine. If you want to stage an armadillo slinging contest, we'll get in line with the rest. Don't sweat the small stuff. All will be well.

At the moment we are listening to an Rick Fielding CD. I am (obviously) here at the magic box. LEJ is on the upper deck burning burgers while WyoWoman grades his flipping for technique and style. Bill has just loaded his plate and BlueJay is right behind. Rex is outside with burger in hand. I think it is clear that this bunch will indeed sing and play for food! Each of them has asked me to say "hi" to you.

It is now my turn at the grill so I am off and running. If you listen carefully in about fifteen minutes you will begin to hear the music.

Best wishes to all!

Allan C.

After barbecued burgers, bratwust ,sweet corn and salad, we sat outside by torch-light under the stars and had a whale of a session. I was able to record most of the hootenanny, and will mix down some tape in the next few days. It was a night to remember thanks to Allan, Bill, Wyowoman, Rex,and Bluejay, as well as honorary Mudcatters Dan, Jeanette, Elise and 10 year old fiddle-whiz Kyle O'Brien, and not to forget Rex's guitar-playing pal Bill. The selection of songs ranged from traditional English hornpipes and American Bluegrass to Dylan , Guthrie, Stan Rodgers, Everly Brothes and original tunes.

What a great thing the Mudcat Cafe is when it brings people together in music, as it did last night. Pure magic...

Allan, I was just looking at your Wyoming plans, and Wayne and I are on the phone right now. It is not possible to get from Casper through the Tetons and Yellowstone to Gardiner in one day (Sunday). You can't drive at interstate speeds through the National Park. But to come all the way to Wyoming and miss those two national parks would be a tragedy! Wayne does have friends in Sheridan. Mitch plays bluegrass mandolin. The name of the couple is Mitch and Kathy the number is 307-674-1718 (Sheridan). Wayne and I are trying to figure out if we should invite guests each of these nights if we are not sure of your time of arrival. Please advise!

Check in when you get to Casper. Thanks, guys.

Folks, I just got home and I'm worn out. This has been such an incredible three days. It's something I'll tell my grandchildren about. (In fact, I've already started). Between meeting Allan, Bill, BanjomanCo at my house, and meeting, (and playing music with!) the whole group of Mudcatters and Mudcat friends at LEJ's, I am blown away. Played a little blues with LEJ, bluegrass with Rex, and tried to follow Bill on the melodion. (Allan warned me about that). And got to play a Kate Wolf song with WyoWoman. She mentioned in a recent thread that it would be nice, (if we weren't so far apart), if we could try some of Kate's stuff. Thanks to Allan and Bill's great journey, it became possible. WyoWoman has a wonderful voice, I enjoyed it immensely. Of course if she reads this post, she'll probably chide me for the lousy sentence construction above.BG As I said, this has been one of the coolest experiences of my life. I feel so fortunate. And it has me thinking I really need to find more time to PRACTICE. Many thanks to you all. BlueJay

Allan here. I have discussed the travel issues with Bill and he has basically said, "Whatever will be, will be." So here is my best guess. We will leave early from Casper and head north to Sheridan. There we will stop at the saddlery shop and then head to Billings and turn westward to Bozeman. We will touch base with Alice and then head down to Gardiner to meet as planned with Wayne. I will try to give Alice a call somewhere along the way from Billings so she will have some idea when to expect us. We will decide the next morning as to how much of the north end of Yellowstone to visit before we head back to Alice's. I truly believe this is do-able.

I guess it may sound odd, but I, myself, really don't care one way or the other about touring the park and Bill has already seen it. This trip is MOSTLY about visiting 'Catters. The other stuff along the way is entirely incidental and not a vital part of our trip. Just as long as I can see an elk or two before we leave Montana, I will be a happy camper.

Hi, Allan, I didn't know Bill had already been to Yellowstone. This does sound do-able. Keep me posted, cause there are fiddlers and other musicians here who are starting to show interest in getting together at my house when you are here. Yes, this is exciting! So.. maybe Sunday you will pass through Bozeman and go down to Gardiner (Jardine) to see Wayne, right? I'll give him a phone call tomorrow and let him know. He doesn't have access to email except once in awhile at the library.

By the way, I hope your visit can recruit some musicians here to the Mudcat forum. Aside from Les B, the only other Mudcatter in Montana that I know of is Aron in Columbus, a friend of LEJ and Wayne... remember the attempt at Mudstock last summer? Anyway, Aron lives in Columbus, a small town just east of Billings, an easy stop for gas along the highway. One other musician from our session here stopped into the Mudcat once for lyrics (Bob W.). Les and I seem to be the only ones with the real mud membership at this point.

Allan and Bill,

Since people will be drifting in and out around here today and tonight, I just wanted you to know, don't sweat it on trying to get here by any particular time. Mimosa said he was going to try to be in this evening sometimes, so for eats, I thought we'd just put out some cold cuts (yes! meat in my hosue for you omnivores, Rog & my sisters included!**BG**) with ham, turkey, cheese, sandwich rolls, different chips, some kind of cokies, etc...you know, the kind of stuff that rots your arteries, BUT will also have fresh fruits and veggies, too. Not sure what anyone wants to drink, so there will be spring water, coffee and we'll make a run for whatever else we need when people put in their orders. If none of this strikes yer fancy....ummm...too bad!**BSEG**

Betty and I did a trial sing in HearMe last night and it went pretty well...it is going to be so much fun to see you AND hear you....what a wonderful thing this incredible community is, to have brought this to pass!

What's a cokie? Kat, we don't want Officer Obie showin' up at your door and the boys have a lot of driving to do too. Think this through again.

Allan just called from the motel, and we will be leaving here in about 15 minutes to go do the Tourist thing at Ft. Laramie, etc. We had a wonderful time last nite, cook-out with lots of home made goodies, and great music. Don't know for sure what time they will actually head for Casper, but it's about 2 hrs from Guernsey, and I will let you know when I get back to Torrington. OOoooo, this is FUN!!

Whew! It was over so fast. But then we did go to well after 2:00. It sure was a fine evening and EJ put up a bunch of good eats. It sure was good to see Bill, Allen and WyoWoman. A big surprise was seeing BlueJay. He couldn't get enough of the South Colorado stop so he came up with the wandering minstrels. My guitar player showed up (his name is Steve) but not the banjo player. So we had a tough time playing some good bluegrass for Bill. No matter, he picked up the five stringer himself and did a fine job. What a guy, handy on the guitar and banjo too. Then there's the melodion. He was playing jigs left and right on the mando and we were following as best we could. Seeing as we weren't following too well with jigs from his homeland he started in with some american jigs. He knows a bunch of material. Sure liked Allens songs. Some from around the world. Loved WyoWoman's singing and fine yodeling. And BlueJay's songs and 12string playing. We need to get the Colorado bunch together again for some more of this. EJ was fine on the harmonica and singing along. Didn't know you knew that Civil War song EJ. It was over too soon. I got home and laid down for two hours. Then it was up and go to work. That made for a long day but I survived. I sure wish I could do like BlueJay and go North for another session. Good luck to our travellers. Hope everyone has a great time up in Wyoming.

Rex

I have just gotten back from a trip I had to take the day after our gathering at LEJ's, so this is my first chance to post.

I make it a practice to collect perfect times in my life, knowing that as I string them together in my memory, they become this life's crown jewels. Wednesday night was just such a time. It was so amazing to meet these carnate beings I've known for over a year in the ether. To actually hug 'em and play music with 'em and laugh deeply and loudly -- so much more satisfying than ROTFLOL...

The company was congenial, the mountain air crisp and clear (after threatening rain early on), LEJ's log home in the pines was the perfect setting and we had a night dense with texture and goodwill. Bill has offered to take us around England next year when the Mudcat World Domination Tour continues (I think we should call it that whenever one 'Catter goes a'visitin' with other Mudcateers out of her/his home territory). I simply must get a passport ...

And Rex, I agree -- we need to get the Colorado 'catters together whenever we can to keep the connection going. I did find a house in Pueblo today, so I'm heading downstream, but having come from Wyoming, a measly ol' two-1/2 hour ride doesn't seem like much.

Thank you so much LEJ for hosting such a deeply satisfying event. (Catspaw, don't go there..)

WW

It is 1 a.m. in Wyoming and I am just off ta bed...too tired to say much, but know that I will get incredibly restful sleep...I am in a state of euphoria and have been grinning my head, knowing know what it means to "die and go to heaven" and, live to tell about it!**BG** In addition to Bill and Allan's melodious and incredible music, we've also had Mimosa here with two harps and gifted us with some of the most beautiful songs. I am in amazement and well....more later...luvyakat

Well, guys, I just finished a long phone conversation with Wayne Skertich. He and I have never met, but I know his daughter Zondra from our local Bozeman sessions. She is a university student here. Zondra is on her own road trip, in Illinois right now. She had told me she was writing a book on her family's history of music, and I had assumed she was talking about bluegrass, since I knew she and her parents played bluegrass music.

In this conversation with Wayne, I just learned that his family is Croatian, and his heritage is the Balkan music that was performed in the Chicago area by his father, uncle, and other relatives, called the Skertich Brothers. He has alot of ethnic intruments, about 50 78rpm records they recorded. (He also has a friend who is British who lives in Livingston who plays flamenco who may drive down.)

Wayne does not have a computer at this time, but once in awhile can use the library internet. He found a website with photos of his family and the Skertich Brothers band at tamburaweb.com - here's the link click here Skertich Brothers Tamburitza Orchestra. Now I am considering going down to Gardiner tomorrow night with you to meet Wayne. I hesitated because of the price of gas and other obligations, but after talking to Wayne more, I am persuaded that having us altogether in Jardine, hearing his collection of ethnic instruments, being together, would be an opportunity I should not miss. On Monday night here, my voice teacher would like to come over and hear the music, I have another friend from England, a couple of local fiddle players who would like to play... Sunday night in Gardiner and Monday night in Bozeman are going to be quite an experience.

Now I am off to mow the lawn. I'll check back later.

Alice
