Subject: Folk Songs and Censorship From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:05 PM Hi, Breezy - I guess I have to say that this is not a song I'd include in my repertoire, and many of the words are not in my usual vocabulary. However, bawdy songs have always been part of folk music, and this is a folk music discussion forum. The title and lyrics may be offensive to some, but to remove or euphemize them would be far more offensive to those who wish to engage in the free study of folk music. Euphemized thread titles like Slavery-Era Song, 'Run, ======, Run' are extremely offensive to some of us. Many of the early song collectors omitted or changed song lyrics they considered offensive. As a result, the original forms of many traditional songs have been lost forever. Now, THAT is offensive. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Amos Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:11 PM I demur. Surely all these things are an inherent theme in the best folk tradition? From the Balls of Kerremuir to the Good Ship Venus and Keep on Trucking, the celebration of ribald sexuality has always been with us, one of the great sources of joy and blues in the human condition. If you are so easily offended by a college f**ing song, why would you not be offended by a song celebrating gunning people down, or celebrating outlawry (Jesse James, Onward Christian Soldiers) or the murder of young women (Pretty Polly, the Banks of the Ohio) just to name a few awful aspects of real life you have to get accustomed to to grow up in the world. I submit that when you face such things squarely, the best spirit of those who sing of them shines through even while the atrocious aspects become easily faced and understood. And it is only through understanding that you achieve freedom for yourself from any aspect of the world. A |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Big Mick Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:28 PM Folk music is about the human condition. Nothing is more a part of that than sexuality in all its forms. I am with Amos on this one, there are many things I consider truly obscene and much worse than this. The worst one could say is that it is a bit gratuitous, but hey, we put up with a certain moron making horrid remarks about decent folks. If we try to censor those personal attacks, some of you get jaundiced about it. This is not nearly as bad. Mick |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy S From: Peace Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:30 PM From (Google it) Eat Bite lyrics - John Valby lyrics Well, I went to a party and what did they do? They took off their socks and they took off there shoes, they took off their coats, and they took off their pants. I had a hunch, they weren't gonna dance. (Chorus) Oh, eat-bite-fuck-suck-gobble-nibble-chew, nipple-bosom-hairpie-fingerfuck-screw, moose-piss, cat-pud, orangutan-tit, sheep-pussy, camel-crack, pig and lion shit. Awww-shit. Well, everybody-everybody's ass was bare, No bras left, just a queer over there, But the whole damn thing didn't faze me a bit. I just jumped on the pile, and grabbed some tit. Chorus again and again; faster and faster (et cetera). Well, my baby's not a sports fan, but she plays with balls whenever she can, because her favourite sport you see, is playing tonsil hockey

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Peace Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:41 PM Words tend to lose their meanings after a while. Frankly, I am not offenede by the words so much as by how poorly written the song is. It doesn't really rank any higher than Lulu, and I outgrew that by the age of ten or eleven I think. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Peace Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:46 PM Difference between bawdy and trash, maybe. "The cabin boy, the cabin boy The dirty little nipper, Shoved broken glass up the firstmates ass And circumcised the skipper" It is clever, well-written and bawdy. I find little of redeeming value in the fuck/suck song. However, it's a piece of folklore and likely should be stored somewhere in case anyone wants it in a hundred years. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Amos Date: 23 Apr 05 - 03:04 PM I concur with Bruce that this particular gem is a trashy jade. Nor do I mean to offend by defending it in principle. The question we might really want to ask is how we grew so afraid of our parts, pieces and elements? Doesn't it tend to drive us into a kind of fearful schizophrenia to be unwilling to communicate about body parts and their various uses? Just a thought. I have never been fond of the Victorian/Edwardian terror of limbs. A |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Peace Date: 23 Apr 05 - 03:13 PM Actually, that is a bit off, Amos. "The Pearl" was a collection of pornography written in Victoria's time. If I remember, it was done as flyers or broadsides. It is essentially like the stuff that's written today. They knew as much about sex as we do. Hell, it's most a math game anyway. There are so many holes and so many places ya can put things. As the numbers increase so does the complications of the math problem. Of course, they didn't have the good taste to include goats, but no one's perfect. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: nutty Date: 23 Apr 05 - 03:15 PM Can someone please enlighten me as to who John Valby is and how this can to be described as a traditional folksong?? The lyrics seem to me to be far too modern .... more like a Jock Strap Ensemble rugby song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: GUEST,nutty Date: 23 Apr 05 - 03:29 PM Thanks Brucie but I've already been there and it tells me nothing ..... What I really wanted to know were his connections with folk music and the sources for the songs that he claims to be Traditional Bawdy songs. I would suggest that unless such provenance can be provided, then this thread should be closed as it serves no useful purpose on Mudcat. As someone has already pointed out ....we do have children visiting this site. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy S From: Haruo Date: 23 Apr 05 - 04:47 PM Well the original post repeatedly referred to earlier versions (back to 1948, only a year or two later than Greensleeves ;-) ) in some archives at Indiana University (Bloomington?). The song is not I think a great gem, but it may indeed be traditional in some folkishly meaningful sense. As far as writing F*@# for Fuck, I don't see the point. It doesn't protect any children that I've ever met. If they're able to read Fuck they're able to decipher F*@#. Personally, I first learned the word reading D H Lawrence, and thought it was an English dialect word for a couple of years before I ran into it in speech here in Seattle. Wasn't till I was a freshman at Yale (with a couple of dorm buddies from Brooklyn) that I got some idea of the true range of nuance the word can afford when pressed. But this song is a lightweight. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Bill D Date: 23 Apr 05 - 06:24 PM it ain't traditional. The lyrics are ***OBVIOUSLY** college/rugby/etc...and from the mid 1900s....probably exaggerated by various groups for the sake of effect. I feel pretty strongly that the title should be toned down, though I have no objection to bawdy songs as such. This is not clever, interesting or cute...it is just a way to be raunchy in rhythme. John Mehlberg: You 'could' just put this on your own webesite and link to it from here if you really want someone to discuss versions of it. Opening a thread here with the title like that is kinda tasteless. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: John M. Date: 23 Apr 05 - 07:12 PM Something does not have to be old for it to be traditional...Is the song "Chastity Belt" a traditional song? How about "Five Constipated Men of the Bible"? These all seem to be modern traditional songs which have been learned and passed on by oral tradition. Maybe 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' is not sung by *your* folk and the people you know. Ah, but do all groups share identical songs? Some groups specialise in bawdry (e.g., rugby players) but their songs are traditional to the extent that they sing their songs and pass them on to the next generation of rugby players who continue to sing them. At different times and places one could have been convicted of obscenity for singing one of the songs above. Remember Burl Ives was arrested for singing "The Foggy, Foggy Dew" at which no one today would bat an eyelash. I find it odd that people who object to this song (and the title) post to this thread and cause the objectional song (and title!) to be listed first in the thread list. If you object to this thread, DO NOT POST as then the thread will disappear. As I say in my initial post: Please don't post "dreadful song" or "worst song written" as you are not helping. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: gnu Date: 23 Apr 05 - 08:16 PM Sooo. You read the title, but still clicked. Then you read: "If you are easily offended, please STOP READING. This thread is for mature audiences only. Please don't post "dreadful song" or "worst song written" as you are not helping." Then you posted an objection. Okaaaaay then. Don't read this. For fourty days and fourty nights, We sailed upon the Atlantic. We spotted a whore upon the shore, And the crew became quite frantic. Here we come, full of rum, Lookin for women to paddle our bums... The North Atlantic Squadron!!! If you wish another verse, Just because you are perverse, But want to complain that you remain, Adverse to the coarse of this refrain. Fuck you. Here we come, full of rum, Lookin for women to paddle our bums... The North Atlantic Squadron!!! My apologies to the author, who wrote some fifty verses of this TRAD sailor song of the Royal Canadian Navy. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: MartinRyan Date: 23 Apr 05 - 08:20 PM I'm not sure what John meant by "mature audiences" in his original post. I have a suspicion that's the least likely place he'll find an answer! That said, what matters is that he has asked a question - and nobody seems to be even trying to provide an answer. I suggest this be converted to an edited "Origins:" thread and that all irrelevant "answers" be removed. Regards |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Ebbie Date: 24 Apr 05 - 02:21 AM This is not an offensive thread, as such- hey, we all know the words, and maybe even the acts. However, I was under the impression a year or two ago that we at the Mudcat were concerned as to the possibility of drawing the attentions of various juvenile individuals and others not so young who might come upon us by just putting a certain word in a Search feature, and tacitly or maybe even explicitly agreed that those certain words would not appear in the thread title. Am I mistaken? The Mudcat has enough problems with juvenile minds without going out of our way to find more. IMO |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Bill D Date: 24 Apr 05 - 03:32 PM yeah, Ebbie...that's part of what I was trying to say. We have uncensored songs in the database and in the threads...but why not a title on the thread saying: "Does anyone know this VERY bawdy song?"...so that those who don't like that sort of thing could just pass on by. (This, from a guy who has sung "Charlotte the Harlot" in public...at a sing where the **TOPIC** was "Sex" and I asked ahead of time if anyone had any reservations.) "Charlotte the Harlot", done well, is witty and clever, as well as I know another song that is so non-PC that I have only done it once for people, and that at 2:30 in the morning, as an example of non-PC.....and no, I will not post it here. (as to "don't post, and it will drop off"..pooh! the damage has been done....) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy Song From: Bill D Date: 24 Apr 05 - 04:49 PM nice sentiment, Blissfully...but it is a back/white distinction, as if there are only two types of people reading here, with only two viewpoints. What about those who 'know' very well what it means, but just don't like having it 'up front'. It's like TV advertising...how detailed and explicit do YOU want the Viagra ads or condom ads or tampon ads to be? It's all very well to say that knowlege is a good thing, and kids will hear these words anyway....but isn't there a reasonable place for displaying or using them? I'm sorry, but when a word that is useful and relevant in one context is used just for gratuitous shock value in another context, I just wonder about motivation. (I own BOTH volumes of G. Legman's "Rationale of the Dirty Joke", which is a scholarly study of sexual humor, but I don't read them out loud in the grocery store....and while I understand including all forms and variants, there are many of those jokes that are just plain BAD and are not suitable for general dinner table conversation.) |

Subject: RE: pg13 Add: 'Eat, Bite, Fuck, Suck' Trad. Bawdy From: Jeri Date: 10 Oct 05 - 06:26 PM I don't know that I ever heard the cheer, but I don't know that I didn't either. I know that in one Air Force unit I was in in Texas, there was a traditional cry of "reality check" to be answered by all within hearing, "Him, him, fuck him!" It never made any sense to me, but if it came from the chant you posted, it's easy to see how the "Dear Mom" part would have been changed to "reality check." (If I ever did hear this, it was someplace that had both alcohol and off-duty pilots. I might have had some of the alcohol.) |

This is one, not already in the Rugby Thread, and also a "trad" long forgotten, however, NOW fervently revieved to an active cognitive ferment with yeast remaining from high-school daze....perhaps, the tiny bubbles will revive a forgotten line.
